S uzanne a n d I a r r ived back in th eDominican Republic late on September30th. We left Knoxville at th e beginning ofAugust and moved furniture toNew Hampshire, visited supportingchurches, packed suitcases and dufflebags, and go t everything, including ou r14-year-old cat, Elvira, ready for th etrip back.We flew ou t of Bloomington, IL andwe especially want to thank Ken andJan Rutledge, our long-time forwardingagents, for their love and hospitality inSeptember as we based ourselves fromthei r home a t the Lit t le Galilee Christian Assembly in Clinton, IL

What 's it like to be back? I t reallyfeels like coming home in a lo t ofways. We have not had too muchtrouble getting used to th e lifestyle inLa Romana. We ar e impressed by th efriendliness and openness of th e peoplein L a R o ma na T he economic s i tuat ionin the coun try is th e worst it's beens ince 1989 Inf la t ion in 2 3 w a s o ve r65% and the Dominican peso devaluedfrom 18 pe r US dollar to over 40 perdollar, so th e average working personhas had a very difficult yea r. Team Work in Easternominic n Repubiic

We were especially pleased to see th e progress that th e workha s made in the past year. The team here, Benito and RosaMartinez, Carlos and Ivelisse Diaz, and Alejandra Ortiz, ha smade real ly significant inroads into s tarting the churches in LaRomana and in Higiiey. They have been using a Bible studynetworking system developed by missionaries in CentralAmerica and the Bible-based lessons have proven to be reallyeffective in leading people to Christ.

Our f irs t week here was spent in meetings -- team buildingexercises that Suzanne developed and led. We were aided byRandy Gordon and Neil Webster from the Northeast Chris tianChurch in Louisville, KY who spent 3 days with us helping usdecide what ministries and what approaches we will be using inthe e s t a bl i sh m e n t o f the churches in t h e e a st er n DominicanRepublic. We also worked through our roles on the team and theresponsibilities that each of us will have as th e work continuesto develop. One of the main points that we ar e stressing isdeveloping th e church here to reach into th e middle class part ofthe society and cariying ou t evangelistic outreaches that aretruly effective. That means we all h av e t o think differently, andplan activities and projects that we've never done before. That'shard work We also will be questioning everything we do andwhy we do i t t ha t way.

ible StudyNetwork- A Great SuccessOne of th e keys to sustained church

growth is a simple yet systematic way toteach people abou t Chris t. One o f th erecent church growth books uses the phrase pre-Christian rather than non-Christian. That puts a very positive outlook onhow we approach people. The team hereha s been using, and Suzanne and I arebeginning to use, a Bible study systemdeveloped by Project World Reach andmissionar ies in e ntr al a nd S ou th America. It is designed as an ^each-one-teach-oneprogram where th e people who are disciplesquickly begin to disciple others. In Spanishwe ceill it La Red which means a fishingnet. And that is exactly what it is. We arefinding great interest in many people andthese Bible-based lessons lead people tomake an intelligent decision for Christ, beimmersed, and then become an activemember of th e chu rch. One such person isMiriam Morla, a school teacher, who wasdiscipled by Carlos and Ivelisse and madehe r confession of faith and was baptized byar los and enito in October.

The t eam he re is committed to usingthis Bible study network as much as ispossible t o r each La Romana and the othercities o f the eas te rn part of th e DominicanRepublic. In La Romana we're praying that25 members of th e church will begin leadingBible studies using this system during 2004.Every activity that we have during 2004,including ou r work wi th t he t eams from theUnited States, will be geared toward gettingpeople involved in t he network. Weshould have a tremendous year of growth,Lord willing.

Medical Outreach Programets UnderwayDr. Polanco and the mission team organized a Medical

Evangelistic outreach program on Saturday, November 29and over 250 people were treated and had medicine prescribed, al l free of charge We were blessed to be able to usethe facilities o f t h e Centro Mutual is ta a nd about 15 members of the medical and administrative staff helped, also freeof charge. We were especially pleased with their participation. Many reorganized their regular schedules to beavailable to help. We were excited to have these greatcontacts, both with the patients who came and with themedical staff. As a result of the outreach, three families areinvolved in th e Bible Study Network and several of th emedical staff responded to our invitation to attend thechurch's Christmas dinner. We're hoping and praying thatthe consistent contact with the medical community therewiU open a lot of doors for th e church in La Romana.

Medical Outreach atour New Church Home

In La RomanaOne o f th e biggest needs for th e church

in La Romana was an adequate meetingplace. The church has been meeting on th ecarport at Benito and Rosa's house since it sinception and has outgrown th e space, plusit never feels like church when you'remeeting in someone's home for a long periodof time. The Lord ha s answered th e prayerfor an adequate and affordable place in aBIG way.

Dr . Martin Polanco, one of the churchmembers, works at one of the local cl inicscalled E l C en tr e Mu tu ali st a. T he c en te r is anon-profit organization made up o f 10 nonprofit organizations in La Romana tha t seekto help th e less fortunate part of th e citywith medi ca l a n d e d uc at io na l ou t r eachprograms. They had a large piece of landand a nice building built by th e governmentin 1972 to fu r the r t he i r causes. Included inth e building is a large auditorium that has160 s ea t s and can hold abou t 100 more sea t scomfortably.

Unfortunately, as is often th e case ingovernment projects, th e non-profit entityhas not h ad t he funds to maint a in th ebuilding, especially th e auditorium, and it isin real need of upkeep and r epai r. TheBoard of Directors approached Dr. Polancot o see if we would be interested in makingan arrangement wi th them. We would fixup the auditorium and make it presentablea nd th e oardwill le t u s u se th e audi tor iumrent free We were immediately interestedand go t th e ball rolling among ou r churchcontacts in th e United States about gettingwork teams involved in t he project. Theresponse has been so great we ar e alreadybooked up for 2004 and looking to 2005.

The u se o f the center will be a blessingin a number of ways:1. Everyone in town knows where th e

center is. Many have remarked hownice i t used to be an d t hey a re gladsomeone is helping the cen te r withsome of their many needs.

    2. I t allows th e church to show th ecommunity tha t we care about theirwelfare

    3. I t wi ll a l low th e church t ime toactively look for property to buildtheir building on, without having toworry about rent payments.

End of Year Church ActivitiesThe Christmas season in th e Dominican Republic is filled

with activities and church events just like in th e States. Theteam here organized a Christmas dinner with th e Bible studynetwork in Higiiey th e week before Christmas and it was abig success and we all enjoyed th e fellowship. One of ourgoals for that outreach program is to have 8 Bible studiesgoing when we start again in th e next few days. We shouldbe having some baptisms in t he next month here.

The church i n La Romana organized a Christmas dinner, which we held in ou r house. We lost count after 140 peoplecame several people came from th e different Bible studycells and from th e Cen tr o Mu tu a l is t a Chr i s tmas dinnershere always include roast pork, turkey, and stewed goat meatAs th e crowd got larger and larger, we wondered whether thefood would stretch, but the ladies serving did a very good jobin organizing th e distribution and we ha d more than enough. We had two of ou r neighbor families come - one of th eneighbors is I tal ian and th e other family is Haitian-Americanfrom Orlando Carlos and Ivelisse led th e youth group in thepreparation of a drama about the true meaning of Christmas.

Plans for 2004As we look at this New Year we are sett ing some

exciting and challenging goals for th e work i n the eas te rnsection. Here ar e a few of the goals we have discussed:1. Get the Centro Mutualista auditorium in presentable shape. We have th e following list to ge t done:

    a. Fix the leaking concrete roofb. Paint the interior - especially th e ceilingc. Cover and repair th e 160 theater-style seatsd. Install fans and lightse. Prepare Sunday School classroomsf. Clean and landscape th e exterior groundsg. Build bathrooms for th e church's use

We're thrilled that ou r supporting churches are in te re st ed in thi s project several are signed up to come help onone or more of these projects. Some friends of the ministry

To: Larry Travis ,LaurieYork , Linda Fink ,, ,Lois Hargis , ,Subject: Greetings from La Romana earFriends in Christ,Greetings once again from the Dominican Republic. Suzanne and I are doing well andexcited to see the ministry here continue to grow and mature. We mentioned in our last e-mailupdate that there are now 8 ministry teams in place in the church in Romana and they eachare beginning to organize and get towork. We're especially excited to see one of themembers, Eddy Marte, assume the leadership in the Bible Study Network system that we'reusing. Eddy will oversee the development and implementation ofthe network and Suzanneand I will makesure that they havethe materials to work with. The network is an each one-teach one type of program. There are three levels, each with 14 lessons. Right now there areabout 15 people teaching lessons and oneofthe goals ofthe ministry is to have 30 by the end

of the yearOne of the real advantages of this program is that many people who finish the first level orthe first two levels are ready to share what they've learned with their friends and family. It's ablessing to see people getting excited about sharing the gospel with their friends andneighbors. We're also thrilled to see the growth in both number and maturity ofthe young people in thechurch. They recently had theirelections forofficers and they tookit very seriously Theyvoted in secret and it took about 20 minutes They are busy this week putting the finishingtoucheson Sunday's program for the worship service. They are in charge of everything fromstart to finish and are very excited about their participation. After that, the nextweekend isYouth Camp in Salcedo andwe have at least 20 going to that. They have beenworking toearn money to help pay for the camptrip and they have earned over $4000 pesos sellingcookies and juice after church services on Sunday evenings.

Suzanne and I will be gone to the United States from May 4-26. Ouryounger daughter, Laurie, graduates onMay 22 from Fordham University in New York City We're really proud of her, especially being able to graduate in 4 yersafter transferring We'll also be able to see Emilyand visit a couple of churches. We're looking forward to seeing the girls and taking a breakafter a very busy and productivesix months here.Thank you for your continued prayers and support ofourwork here in the DominicanRepublic. Please pray especially for the presidental elections coming uponMay 16. BaptismsSolid proof of growth is seeing people dedicate

    the i r l ives t o Ch r is t and to be obedient inbaptism. We recently had four baptisms;

madoJun ioOma r CedehoWanda de la CruzMir ta Saba la

We're finding that the people who finish th ef ir st 14 lessons in th e Bible Study Network aremuch more inclined to make a thoughtful andplanned decision for Christ. At th e end of th e 14^lesson there s a strong call for a decis ion thatreally has an impact on the people who completeth e study. There is another group of people whoare reaching th e point of baptism, hopefully i n th enex t few weeks

    Benito Martinez baptizes Mirta Sabala

Our young people were more than excited tobe abl e to participate i n t he island-wide youthcamp in Salcedo the last weekend in April. Wehad 28 teenagers go and they had a wonderfultime. The boys' basketball team brought home thetrophy from th e basketball tournament and werethey eve r p roud o f that The young people ha dbeen working for several months to make moneyto help defray th e costs of camp and as a resultalmost al l th e teenagers that went got some typeof scholarship to help them attend. join our team in La Romana. Victor is 30 and has 7 years pastoral experience in the northern section of thecountry. Victorwill be assuming more and more of the lead pastor role in the next year and we're very excited tohave them. Yudermy graduated with a degree in Fashion Design and has a wealth of decorating ideas that havealready been put to workEnthusiasm and attendance is up at the church We had 140 in the worship service last Sunday We re seeingmore and more outreach activities planned and we re seeing the results of trying to reach those who ar e unchurched . We hosted a Couples Night last evening at our house with 23 couples, several of whom had beeninvited by church members. We had two hours of laughing and reflection on our marriages. We played theNewlywed Game and everyone got a big kick out of it Our Leadership team is doing a great job and working welltogether. Our main job with them is to keep them on task and pointed in the same directionWe're also very excited that word of the church and its work is getting out into the community. One of our newfamilies, Ruben and Ana Santos, ar e natural leaders . Ruben runs a public ca r route and takes Bible tracts in hiscar to pass out to his passengers Ana is known and loved by all in their neighborhood. Their three sons go to apublic school not far from the church and Ruben and Ana made contacts for us withthe school principal. Whenthe team from Northeast Christian Church was here in October we were able to take part of th e team to do somesports related outreaches and we also took the dental team to begin work on some of the students that hadcavities. That opened the door for more outreaches. The principal asked us ifwe could provide Bible materials forthe school's religion class so we are now producing materials for the 471 students so that they have a Sunday-school type work page each week. Two of the teachers are beginning to attend church so the Lord is workingWe're also rejoicing with our family Emily is doing very well in her first semester at graduate school at EasternUniversity in Philadelphia. She is studying International Financial Development and hopes to work for a reliefagency in a 3rd world country when she graduates.
