Bitch Judge: Rose-Marie Boyd Coates ~ Karaburan

I am delighted to have been asked to judge bitches for the Yorkshire Afghan Hound society at

their 33rd Championship show.

I was introduced to Afghan hounds by my parents when I was six years old.

My family has had Afghan hounds since 1979. We had our first show dogs in 1981. I started

showing dogs in adult competition at the age of 10, when I qualified our bitch for Crufts.

I gained my 1st Junior Warrant when I was 14 years old with Karaburan Tokyo Rose. I went on

to win J.W.’s with K. Madam Butterfly, K. Count Baisey and K. Billie Holiday simultaneously.

At the age of 16 I won my first challenge certificate, best of breed and best in show at the

E.E.A.H.C with K. Tokyo Rose, under John Charlesworth (Daturrah), from Canada.

K. Tokyo Rose went on to win 1cc and 2rcc’s and K. Billie Holiday gained 1cc and 4rcc’s.

One of our major wins which took my breath away was winning Karaburan Jelly Roll Morton’s

first CC, B.O.B and B.I.S out of special yearling at the Y.A.H.S under Marita Rodgers and

Ernest Morton.

Jelly Roll Morton then went on to win B.O.B and Reserve Best in the Hound group at Crufts in

1993.

I was 20 years old and he was 2 years of age. He became Ch. Karaburan Jelly Roll Morton on

the day. Later he went on to gain his Irish title and he was Top Afghan hound Stud dog 1998.

Nine of his progeny went on to be well known champions. Morton was the families first home

bred champion. We went on to produce Ch. K. Pretty Boy Floyd, Ch. K. Be Be King, Ch. K.

Tina Turner, Ir Ch. K. Cleo Lane, K. Cab Calloway 3Res ccs and many more top winners.

From their show successes this made Karaburan runner up Top Breeders 1992 and Top

Breeders in 1993 and 1994.

I am interested to see how the breed has evolved in the last ten years.

I look forward to judging your Afghans and wish you all every success, at this show and with

your `affies` in the future.

DOGS IN CARS ON HOT DAYS.Your dog is vulnerable and at risk during hot weather and the Kennel Club offers the following guidance to help you through the do's and don't's travelling to and whilst at KC licensed events.

When travelling to a show please take a moment to consider whether the route to the show is on a busy holiday route, and leave earlier to avoid increased time in traffic jams.

If your vehicle is not air-conditioned seriously consider whether travelling to the show is a good idea at all.

The vehicle should be as fully ventilated as possible, and plenty of stops should be taken, with lots of water available to drink.

Ensure your dog is not sitting in full sunlight. There should be plenty of free flowing air around the dog.

When at the show, never leave your dog in the vehicle.

Keep the dog in the shade - take your own shade for example a large umbrella and always have plenty of water available to drink so your dog stays well hydrated.

Avoid your dog taking part in unnecessary exertion, or from standing in exposed sunlight for extended lengths of time.

Remember, if you feel hot your dog is very likely to feel much hotter and dehydrated, and this could lead to dire results. Please look after your dog's welfare. WARNING: IF YOUR DOG IS FOUND TO BE AT RISK FORCIBLE ENTRY TO YOUR VEHICLE MAY BE NECESSARY WITHOUT LIABILITY FOR ANY DAMAGE CAUSED. 18.Rules and Regulations or Definitions and Instructions of the nature of Rules and Regulations printed for convenience in other parts of this schedule shall be deemed to be regulations of the Committee and shall have the same effect as if they formed part of these regulations.
