Yorkton Regional High School 2015 Valedictory AddressGood afternoon, and
welcome parents and guests, teachers, school board members, and of course, fellow graduates — this is our day after all. Some of you in the back of the theatre may be thinking that you have terrible seats, or need new glasses, and unless you can’t see your hand in front of your face, we are relieved to inform you that neither of those things are true and there are in fact two of us up here. For the third time in YRHS history there are two valedictorians, and we couldn’t be hap-pier to share the honour of representing the 48th graduating class. It does take the nervousness down a notch. Relax and feel free to rest your eyes for the next few minutes of the valedictory lulla-by... I mean speech.
As eighteen year olds, what advice can we really give? We can only detail the advice we have been given and tell of our experiences. However, all of us are basically at the same point in our lives with so much more we need to learn and experience. We have grown from chil-dren into young adults. We have discovered what we stand for, what we like or don’t like, who we like and don’t like, and have an idea of where we want to go in life. Finding per-sonal identity is a large part of growing up and becoming an individual. Remember grade nine and the first day of high
school? (the braces, a bad haircut, the excitement, and the fear of entering the “big school”). Now contrast that with the final year of high school: We understand how the schools works, can navi-gate the hallways in our sleep, are able to joke around with our teach-ers, and the grade nines move out of the way when we walk by (just short of bowing down in our pres-ence).
Amidst even the most elaborate of plans, there will always be a tinge of uncertainty. We spend a lot of time question-ing the dynamics of the world, the abilities of others, and more than often, the capabilities of ourselves. The truth is, life’s ambiguities are not going away anytime soon. The only way to conquer the unpredictable is to embrace it.
Uncertainty is the catalyst that continu-ously propels us to work harder, to discover new interests, and to con-stantly exceed the limits that we place upon our-selves. The hardest trial of all is to forget about fear. Coming into the next phase of our lives, we should see fear not as a blockade, but rather as a source of motivation, a challenger that instils us with a sense of confi-dence, while conjointly exposing our humility and humanness. When we turn our nervous energy into determination, our opportunities expand generously. Fear can be
our greatest downfall. It can also be the kick we need when we are faced with adversity- the motiv-ation for our successes, realizations, and reflec-tion.
We, as a graduating class, have accomplished so much in the fields of academics, athletics, per-forming arts, practical and applied arts, and volunteerism. Our extra-curricular endeavours have provided us with skills that will aid us in all areas of life. Through them, we have learned the value of dedication, and the necessity of per-sistence. We have built relationships that will last well beyond our high school years. We have discovered what we truly love to do, and what brings happiness to our lives and the lives of others. It is import-ant that we continue to engage in these pursuits. They fuel our creativity,
sustain our physical and emotional health, and remind us that work isn’t the only thing that comes after high school.
The past four years have been a culmination not only of our efforts, but also of those around us. There are so many won-derful people to thank for their efforts and support. Firstly, we would like to thank the teachers and staff for their diligence and commitment. Your persistence to motivate and to inspire is evident through the long hours of preparation you put into your classes, and resultantly, the quality of education we receive. As well as teaching us the curriculum, our teachers have provided us with insight into life’s complexities. Like the time Mr. Wawryk used a person called Crackhead Mike to illustrate the dangers of using drugs, or when Mr. Miller taught us
that it was not alright to make fun of bald people. They already have it hard enough in this world. And then there was Mr. Clark’s unique form of academic torture known as rolling the dice, which taught us the value of always being prepared. Counsellors and admin-istrative staff have made the time spent here a lot easier. A big thanks goes out to the custodial staff. My mom complains about cleaning up after two teenagers, I can’t imagine the mess left by 700. We would like to commend all of the coordinators and super-visors of after school activities. For many stu-dents, these pastimes inspired some of the most memorable and fulfilling experiences. Community members- your sup-port for the school has been unceasing since it was first founded in 1967. Parents and guard-ians — this day is also for you. Your unwavering support and your com-mitment to our future often goes unnoticed. But, today our success is also in part your suc-cess. Thank you for drop-ping us off at school, counselling us when we had doubts, inspiring us through your own mem-ories of high school, and most importantly, tak-ing on the unpaid job of being a parent. Thank you for pretending to understand our course-work when we had ques-tions, especially when it involved calculus. Some
of us are moving on, butthe memories and adviceyou have shared with uswill last a lifetime.
Finally, graduates:every single person on this stage today has accomplished the singlemost strenuous and pro-longed 13 years of educa-tion that one can achieve, unless you go on to spe-cialise in Astronomical Spectroscopy. If that is the case, then you are halfway done. Soon wewill be saying goodbyeto high school forever. Atsome points during these past four years, gradua-tion could not come fast enough, and now that we are at the end, it is logicalto want to hold on to the last fleeting moments. It is sad to say goodbyeand think that this maybe the last time that we see some of our friends; however I’m sure there are a couple people thatare happy that they won’thave to see me again. On the other hand, there isthe excitement of find-ing out what will happennext in our lives. Lookingat the past accomplish-ments of the graduates on this stage, I can’timagine some of theamazing things that will be achieved in the follow-ing years. We wish you the best of luck in any-thing and everything that you do following today — unless it’s illegal, then don’t do it! As the British comedian Eddie Izzard once said, “Never put asock in a toaster”.
Once again, congratu-lations class of 2015!
