The essence of the Double H Ranch represents a little bit of everything good in the world. From the inspirational children who touch our lives in extraordinary ways, to the thousands of volunteers who give their time and talents tirelessly, to a dedicated staff led by a strong board of directors, to a generous group of supporters, we certainly Blazed a Trail in 2011.

In 2011, we collectively embraced the philosophy of our co-founders – Charley Wood and Paul Newman – that those with good fortune should reach out and support those in greater need by achieving a balanced budget without jeopardizing the quality or quantity of our program services in any way. Our momentum was strong as we incorporated many new benchmarks into our strategic plan and continued to focus on building organizational capacity and financial sustainability. As well, we introduced new initiatives in fund development and operations programs, which built awareness and opened new doors of opportunity for positive growth.

Your connection with the Double H Ranch has contributed to the Health & Happiness of over 18,000 children and family members in our 19-year history. Answering the original challenge Charley Wood and Paul Newman issued, we’ve created a haven for families and children dealing with serious illnesses.

The Charles R. Wood FoundationThe Double H Board of Directors were faced with the reality that the current water system, installed in the 1950’s and added onto over time, needed to be replaced. A new water distribution system became the #1 infrastructure need for 2012. The Board sought multiple sources to support the rebuilding of this lifeline. The Charles R. Wood Foundation could think of no better way to celebrate the organization’s 20th year than by ensuring the future of the camp for our children and families, and provided $175,000, 50% of the project cost, to fund a new water distribution system.

The Association of Hole in the Wall CampsHaving been granted the Association of Hole in the Wall Camps Major Challenge Grant in 2010, a grant providing funding over a four year timeframe for several proposed objectives, the organization set out to meet the goals set forth in Year 1 of the Challenge relating to building organizational capacity and strengthening relations with donors and leaders who are essential investors in the future of the camp at all levels.

Summer Program Statistics

• For the second year, the largest illness group served was Sickle Cell Anemia, making up approximately 35% of total children served each week. As medical acuity increases, the number of children with immune disorders served decreased with an increase in new Collagen Vascular diagnosis.

• Successfully met recruitment goal of 5% increase in summer camper population. • Hosted successful Sibling pilot program, integrating 15 siblings into Session 1 of camp

with overwhelmingly positive feedback and a plan to continue to serve this population. • Medical Advisory Board created committee structure with goal of building awareness

within medical community, launching a series of action steps to build contacts within the medical field.

• Newly renovated Paul’s Body Shop created a welcoming and accessible waiting area greatly improving the quality of the medical experience.

• Launched a new Archery program, providing another opportunity for campers to gain a sense of accomplishment with a skill that they never thought possible.

• 55% of summer staff were returning employees and volunteers, ranging in ages from 12-76, contributing approximately 45,000 hours in total support.

•• The 13th Season was a record year for total number of applications, children/families and volunteers, serving approximately 200 qualifying students and teaching an additional 500 lessons to parents and siblings.

•• 205 winter volunteers dedicated a combined 11,000 hours of volunteer service.

Hospital Outreach Program

One of the ways to meet the Challenge presented by the Association of Hole in the Wall Camps – to increase camper census – is being accomplished through the implementation of a Hospital Outreach Program (HOP), providing services for children while they are receiving treatment in the hospital setting. This program is also an opportunity to educate parents and medical staff about the programs we offer. After a successful program assessment stage, Double H HOP served over 400 children in 26 hospitals across 7 states, including 11 new hospital partners. Through this process we were able to assess the needs of this growing program and identify how to best use our resources. The success of the Hospital Outreach Program has been an incredible addition to the Double H Ranch.

April Autism Family Weekend - a weekend dedicated to fami-lies who have a child on the Autism Spectrum, providing the traditional camp experience for children hosted in our Adaptive Winter Sports Program but are not eligible for the summer program.Bravehearts Weekend - an oncology camp for women who have survived or are in treatment for various cancers.

Diabetes Family Weekend - an educational retreat weekend designed to meet the needs of children living with type 1 Diabetes and their families.Cindy’s Comfort Camp - in conjunction with Glens Falls Hospital, a weekend designed for children who have a parent or sibling diagnosed with a life-threatening illness.

My husband, Dan, died of cancer a year ago next month, and during his treatment at Dana-Farber, we would see the little children undergoing treatment, and it was very sad. I have nine grandchildren and five great grandchildren who are perfectly healthy. We always felt very blessed that we did not have such tragedy in our lives. We wanted to do something to be grateful for that, and sponsoring a camper felt like the right thing to do.

Seeing the children at Dana-Farber and counting my many blessings prompted me to sponsor a camper for their week at camp again this year.

Tom and Gloria’s motivation for sponsoring a summer camper is their way of supporting children. Tom’s mother, Polly Beeman, supported the Double H Ranch, and he continues to support many of the organizations she did during her lifetime. The Lapham’s inclination is to support organizations that have to do with children dealing with illness. As with many of our donors, St. Judes Children’s Research Hospital is another charitable organization on the Lapham’s list.

Having grown up on a farm in Illinois, Andy felt an instant attachment to the Double H Ranch when given a tour by a good friend and Double H counselor five year ago. Today, living in New York City, Andy recognizes the importance of exposure to nature and the outdoors, and he is thrilled to be able to sponsor children from the inner city for a week of Adirondack Adventure, affording new experiences only a week of summer camp can bring about; like the smell of a campfire and the taste of a s’more; the thrill of climbing to the top of the cargo net at the High Ropes course; and riding a horse for the very first time. “One of my personal goals is to work with kids, providing them life-altering experiences, building confidence and sharing experiences that I hold dear to myself”, notes Andy. “By supporting the Double H Ranch, I am getting closer to achieving this goal.”

In 2001, while in the process of moving from Long Island to upstate New York, Linda volunteered for two weeks of summer camp at Barretstown, in Ireland. Since moving to Granville, Linda has volunteered her time with the Double H kids in Arts & Crafts, the Happy Barn and at the winter ski program; helped at the gala and golf fundraisers and given tours of the camp. “We give what we are able to give”, I wish we could give more,” notes Linda. Linda is also an active member of the Saratoga Partners group, whose mission is to raise awareness and increase funding for Ranch programs through memberships and local events. Linda enjoys bringing her grandchildren to the Partners creative, fun-filled children events. Paul and Becky Kasselman began sponsoring Double H campers at the camp’s inception nineteen years ago. Over the years they have also sponsored the golf tournament and most recently brought their grandchildren to the annual gala at The Great Escape & Splashwater Kingdom.

Paul’s Assistant, Maureen, notes that the business receives many requests for support from not-for-profit organizations, but the Double H catches Mr. Kasselman’s attention. Recently, he received a letter from camper Morgan McCarthy, and handed it to Maureen with the word “CALL” starred and underlined. “I remember first raising my hand to sponsor a camper at an early gala when Charley was still alive”, Dick reminisced.

He and his wife, Kay, have been sponsoring a Double H camper’s week in summer every year since the Ranch’s inception. During one gala, he remembers watching a clip of campers on the big screen, when a camper’s mom turned to him and told him how much the Double H Ranch meant to her child and family. Over the years the Saunders have attended a number of gatherings at the Double H and have had the opportunity to see the campers in action.

This connection remains strong as Dick and Kay support the Double H children for another season. Dick notes that as long as he is able to maintain his financial status, he will continue to give to his college foundation, the Double H Ranch, his church and the Salvation Army, in that order.

James W. and Marion Michaels attended the first gala back in 1992 as the Double H Ranch raised money to embrace their first summer campers in 1993.

Today their sons, John and David, continue in their parent’s footsteps by supporting Double H children and families.

“The Michaels’ family, Eric Willson, Luke Michaels and myself and the rest of our team all share a passion for helping kids; I am fortunate and could not be prouder to be a part of a business whose core is family and children”, notes Heidi, who has worked at The Michaels Group for 25 years. One of 7 children, Heidi remarks, “I could not ask for a better match with the morals and principles I’ve grown up with. Helping a child get to camp at the Double H is very high on our priority list. After all, helping kids is what life is all about.”

Albany Line Department of National Grid

Laden with tractors, chainsaws and know-how, employees of The Albany Line Department of National Grid have been heading to The Double H Ranch for a community workday for a number of years. This year, due to a storm, the group had to cancel their day. So instead, they Blazed A Trail to the Double H Ranch by sponsoring a camper and National Grid matched their sponsorship. Next year, the Albany Line plans to continue to give a day (barring any storms!) and again sponsor a camper for their week.

The mission of the Double H Ranch is to provide specialized programs and year-round support for children and their families dealing with life-threatening illnesses. Our purpose is to enrich their lives and provide camp experiences that are memorable, exciting, fun, empowering, physically safe and medically sound. All programs are FREE of charge and capture the magic of the Adirondacks.
