I was time traveling the other day and thinking about the popularity of smoking back in the 60s. It seemed like everyone I knew smoked including me. I remember my om complaining when her doctor quit providing ash trays in his waiting room. She fixed him, she brought her own. If you’re going to have to wait 20 or 30 minutes a couple of smokes always made the wait more pleasurable. Dear mom died of lung cancer in her 60s. In 1962, I had major lung surger y at Cedars of Lebanon Hospital in Miami, Fl. It was a two-week stay and 88 stitch vent. Today, microsurgery for the same pro- edure eliminates more than 82 stitches nd 11 days. In the 60s and the years efore you could walk freely up and own the halls of hospitals smoking one ight after another. My doctor, would isit each morning with a cigarette hang- ng from his lips offering the advise that probably shouldn’t smoke. I asked him why he smoked. He said it was enjoy- able. No matter where you went, even movie theaters had smoking loges where you could watch a movie, nibble some opcorn , quaff a cola and then light up. The constant clicking of lighters was sometimes a bit annoying. Coffee houses lways had a thick cloud of smoke. moking in the boys room was big busi- ess in Jr. Highs and High Schools. You ould always get a puff on a Camel or ucky Strike by visiting the boys room hen changing classes. Suspension was lways threatened but hardly ever nforced. Most teachers smoked and hey had smoked in the bathrooms at one ime too. There was a bit of camarader ie here. Smoking was permitted in grocery stores, department stores, offices, every- here. I really can’t think of any place here you couldn’t smoke except where xygen was in use. I remember the local as station attendant coming out to fill my tank, wash my windo ws, check my oil, tire pressure, etc., (all that for 22 cents a gallon) with a cigarette dangling from his mouth as he stood there pumping the gas. Everyone was constantly being bom- barded with TV and radio ads for smokes. Some ads featured doctors, mili- tary (smoke em if ya’ got ‘em) and movie stars hyping the taste and smoothness of a certain brand. Airlines always gave you complimentary cigs whenever you flew. And the whole plane was one giant smoking section including the cockpit. I remember one flight from Miami to Michigan where one of the stewardesses was smoking a cigar, not a little one, but a big cigar and blowing smoke all over the place. Downtown area’s in major cities always had good looking young ladies giving away complimentary ciga- rettes during lunch hour. Different man- ufacturers were always jockeying for your business hoping you’d like their brand and hook up for life or until death do we part. I saw many die in their thir- ties and forties from lung cancer over the years. The surgeon general’s report of the 60s on smoking took years to understand and take hold. I can count on one hand today frie nds that smoke. Wonder what the next poison will be? Will it be colas, fries, cheese, red meat, wings, beer, tofu, or tootsie rolls. I really like tootsie rolls I hope it’s not them. Smoking in the boys room is now in the history books gone forever. Thank you America. Friends in Arizona forwarded these delightful new drugs that will help us all lead a better life. Check em out: 1. Fliptor: Increases life expectancy of commuters by controlling road rage and the urge to flip off other drivers. 2.
