"Rickman directs with a sense of compassion and enthusiasm for the subject and really gets the best out of his excellent cast.”
– Screen Daily
A Little Chaos
Sabine de Barra (Kate Winslet), a fiercely independent and talented landscape designer, is chosen to build one of the main gardens at Versailles for King Louis XIV (Alan Rickman). In her new position of power, she challenges gender and class barriers while also becoming entangled – professionally and romantically - with the court's renowned landscape
artist André Le Notre (Matthias Schoenaerts). Winslet gives a winning, charismatic performance in this highly entertaining period drama, her character injecting emotional honesty and creative chaos into an aristocratic milieu ruled by hypocrisy and convention.
Director: Alan Rickman, UK, 2014, 116 min Cast: Kate Winslet, Alan Rickman, Matthias Schoenaerts

"★ ★ ★ ★ ★- The best romantic film of all time" – The Guardian
Brief EncounterDirector: David Lean, UK, 1945, 86 min PG
Cast: Celia Johnson, Trevor Howard, Cyril Raymond
A winner at the first ever Cannes Film Festival, David Lean’s masterpiece (written and produced by Noel Coward) crystallised the English ideal of repressed feelings for generations to come. A provincial married woman meets a handsome doctor (also spoken for) during one of her weekly rail trips into town. In a time
and milieu where infidelity is unthinkable, a chaste but passionate love affair blossoms to the rousing strands of Rachmaninov's Second Piano Concerto. The excitement, anguish, and gentleness of this impossible romance melts the coldest hearts, even today.

In this Cannes-selected English-language debut by French master Olivier Assayas, a veteran actress (Juliette Binoche) confronts an uncomfortable reflection of herself when she agrees to star in a revival of the play that launched her career 20 years earlier. This time however she’s to play the
older role: a middle-aged woman manipulated by her young female assistant. As she rehearses, two young women – her trustworthy assistant and the Hollywood starlet cast in the younger role – force her to ponder her craft, and the emotional and psychological effects of aging.
"A thoughtful and intelligent meditation on acting, fame and age.” – Vanity Fair
Clouds of Sils MariaDirector: Olivier Assayas, France, 2014, 124 min, MA 15+
Cast: Juliette Binoche, Kristen Stewart, Chloë Grace Moretz

"Those incredible faces — MacLaine alight from within every moment, Plummer's glow burning brighter and brighter
— make the romance vibrantly alive."– LA Times
Elsa & FredDirector: Michael Radford, USA, 2014, 97 min, M
Cast: Shirley MacLaine, Christopher Plummer, George Segal
After losing his wife, Fred (Christopher Plummer) resigns himself to waiting for the final curtain as his daughter moves him into a smaller apartment. There, he meets neighbour Elsa (Shirley MacLaine), who bursts into his life like a whirlwind, eager to show him that the time he has left is precious and to be enjoyed to the fullest.
Infused with infectious energy by a cast of seasoned Oscar-winning actors, this romantic comedy gleefully reminds us that we’re never too old to change, to love or to follow our dreams.
15
"Challenges perceptions of what it is to grow old, celebrates living life to the fullest and is full of laughs, colourful characters and Kiwi attitude.” – NZ Herald
Hip Hop-erationDirector: Bryn Evans, New Zealand, 2014, 93 min, M
Entertaining, funny and incredibly inspiring, this documentary follows a troupe of brave but cheeky nonagenarians on a quest to perform at the World Hip Hop Championships in Las Vegas. There’s only “sixty dollars in the bank” and it’s not easy when you “don’t really like the music” and all you can do is “worry about
how to get your socks on…” But with the help of an exuberant coach and young hip hoppers, they slowly begin to believe. It turns out you’re never too old to go on the journey of a lifetime!

"★ ★ ★ ★ ★ - Magnificent: a new Russian masterpiece. Acted and directed with unflinching ambition."
– The Guardian
LeviathanDirector: Andrey Zvyagintsev, Russia, 2014, 141 min, M
Cast: Aleksey Serebryakov, Elena Lyadova, Roman Madyanov
Kolia lives in a small Russian fishing town with his young wife and son. The corrupt mayor is determined to appropriate his business, his house and his land. The resulting struggle expands into a deftly-drawn and morally complex thriller, an electrifying examination of the familial, sexual and judicial tangles of ordinary
lives, played out against the monstrous machinations of Putin’s seemingly unchecked regime. This stunningly shot Oscar-nominated masterpiece won Best Screenplay in Cannes and Best Film at the London Film Festival. It cements Zvyagintsev as one of the masters of contemporary world cinema.
17
"Striking an elegantly sustained balance between intimacy and historical scope, it encompasses nearly all of the virtues of classical British period drama and nearly none of the vices."
– The Hollywood Reporter
Testament of YouthDirector: James Kent, UK, 2014, 129 min
Cast: Alicia Vikander, Kit Harington, Dominic West
Testament of Youth is a powerful story of love, war and remembrance, based on the First World War memoir by Vera Brittain, which has become the classic testimony of that war from a woman’s point of view. A vigorous and forward-thinking woman surrenders her literary ambitions to support the victims when the war breaks
out. A searing journey from youthful hopes and dreams to the edge of despair and back again, it’s a film about young love, the futility of war and how to make sense of the darkest times.
18
"If a moviegoer can't cry for the great tragedy of these Sudanese children, and be touched by their small victories,
then who on earth deserves our tears and cheers?” – Time Magazine
The Good LieDirector: Philippe Falardeau, USA-Kenya, 2014, 110 min M
Cast: Reese Witherspoon, Arnold Oceng, Kuoth Wiel
Orphaned by the Civil war in Sudan, a group of displaced boys must lead young survivors to safety. Years later, they are offered the chance to resettle in Kansas City, where they encounter a helpful if slightly unprepared employment counsellor (Reese Witherspoon). Far from being simplistically rescued by a well-meaning
white saviour, these “lost boys”, played with brio by gifted Sudanese actors, become the heroes of their own lives. Philippe Falardeau (Monsieur Lazhar) sensitively captures humour in the clash of cultures, alongside heartbreak and hope in the challenges of life in the West.
19
"The film’s emotional still waters run deep (…) it is a treat to see such strong actors on screen together.”
– Screen Daily
The SeaDirector: Stephen Brown, UK-Ireland, 2014, 86 min M
Cast: Ciarán Hinds, Charlotte Rampling, Sinéad Cusack
Art historian Max Morden (Ciarán Hinds) returns to the Irish seaside town of his childhood summers, moving into an idyllic boarding house run by Miss Vavasour (Charlotte Rampling). Reminiscing to the summer of 1955, and the time before his wife’s passing, Max attempts to make peace with the past.
Adapted by John Banville from his Man Booker Prize-winning novel, The Sea brings together an impeccable cast in an intimate and uplifting meditation on the unreliability of memory, the thrill of first love, and the way we cope with tragedy.
20
" The Way We Were poignantly captures the insoluble dilemma of reconciling private desires with
public awareness.” – The New York Times
The Way We WereDirector: Sydney Pollack, USA, 1973, 118 min, PG
Cast: Robert Redford, Barbra Streisand, Lois Chiles
Katie Morosky (Streisand) is a politically-minded Jewish student in the 1930s who falls for her complete opposite, the carefree and handsome Hubbell Gardiner (Redford). As the decades pass, love may not be enough to keep them together. Hubbell, who admires Katie's passion for causes, grows weary of her radical activism – which
grows dangerous during the Communist witch hunts of the 50s. Bringing together the 70’s biggest stars, this smash hit was nominated for 6 Oscars and has endured over the years as one of the great love stories in cinema.
21
"As travelogue, this is a persuasive introduction. Viewer beware: the impulse to take a hike is strong.
Wear sturdy shoes!" – The New York Times
Walking the CaminoDirector: Lydia B. Smith, US, 2014, 84 min
What is it about Spain’s 1200 year-old Camino de Santiago trail that lures people from all over the world to spend a month or more walking its 500 miles with little more than a backpack and a pair of boots? In Walking the Camino: Six Ways to Santiago (which Martin Sheen calls “a brilliant documentary!”) journey into the hearts and
minds of six modern-day pilgrims as they cope with blisters, exhaustion and self-doubt to triumph over fears and prejudices that have become roadblocks to living a fulfilled life.
22
"This sensitive drama is deeply affecting, and offers a spot-on portrait of autism and the bewitching world of math."
– The Hollywood Reporter
X+YDirector: Morgan Matthews, UK, 2014, 111 min
Cast: Asa Butterfield, Eddie Marsan, Sally Hawkins
Teenage maths prodigy Nathan struggles when it comes to building relationships. In a world difficult to comprehend, he finds comfort in numbers. When Nathan’s talents win him a place at the International Mathematics Olympiad in Taiwan, he is confronted by unexpected challenges — not least the
unfamiliar feelings he begins to experience for his Chinese counterpart, the beautiful Zhang Mei. From suburban England to bustling Taipei and back again, this original coming-of-age film tracks the funny and complex relationships Nathan builds faced by the irrational nature of love.
