Johanna Teer

Johanna ‘Jody’ Teer

Johanna “Jody” Teer, 70, of Kearny, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2014 in Apache Junction, Arizona. Jody was born Sept. 12, 1943 to Harland and Dorothy Seeley in Iowa City, Iowa. She was a homemaker who was known for baking cakes, writing for Copper Basin News, quilting and serving her community she enjoyed singing in the choir at the Good Shepherd

Methodist Church in Kearny, AZ. She will fondly be remembered as a loving mother and grandma. Jody is survived by her daughters; Sandra (Eleuterio) Gonzales and Deborah Teer; and two grandchildren, Stephanie and Daniel Teer. Services will be held at The Good Shepherd Methodist Church in Kearny, Arizona at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 20, 2014. Please visit the online memorial at Griffithmortuary.com.

Gary L. Smith passed away, peacefully, on Jan. 2, with his wife and family at his side, at his home in Hayden. Gary was born on June 13, 1959 in Little Rock, Arkansas, and, then moved here to Arizona, with his parents, to Phoenix, where they lived from 1965 - 1969. His family then moved to Hayden; then, later, to Winkelman, where he attended Hayden-Winkelman schools and

graduated in 1979. Gary got a job with Asarco Mines immediately after high school and worked there until having to stop in 2013, due to his illness, while still anticipating returning back to work, just as soon as he could. As Gary would say, he fell in love with Linda Lorona the first time he saw her and she became his wife on July 7, 1984. Gary and Linda moved to Dudleyville, and,

together they raised their son, Darryle James, and, welcomed another son, Brian Anthony, a few years later. Gary was a family man who worked hard to make sure his family was well looked after, and, loved them all very much. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, cookouts and picnics with his compadres and friends. Whether it be at the Gila River, Roosevelt Dam, Diversion or other lakes

up north, or, around the area, he was ready to go. There was plenty of food, laughter, conversations, and memories that will last all of us for a lifetime. Gary also loved collecting guns and always made sure he had a 4-Wheel Drive vehicle. Gary’s favorite pastime was watching the Dallas Cowboys football games. He loved hearing oldies, Southern Rock and Country Music after a long

day’s work, and, sitting down to a glass of cold Pepsi. Anybody that knew him knows that, although he was a quiet man, when he had to, he spoke his mind and never pulled any punches. He told it like it was. Gary was kind, giving and hardworking, and a friend you could count on. He will never be forgotten by those who knew him. Gary leaves behind his loving family: wife Linda; two sons Darryle James of Hayden and Brian Anthony of Mesa; his four grandchildren that he loved talking about: Gavin, Jayden, Alyah of Hayden and Brian Amadeus who resides with his father in Mesa; mother-in-law Margaret Lorona; beloved brothers and their wives: Eddie and Susie Smith

of Oracle and Robert and Annette Smith of New Orleans; and, many nieces and nephews. Gary is preceded in death by his father Cecil Smith, mother Mary Smith, stepfather Royce Smith, and father-in-law Arnold Lorona.

OBITUARY

Rev. Harold Newman Byrn, 90, of Phoenix, AZ died peacefully on Jan. 9, 2014. Born March 27,1923 in Wade, OK, Harold moved to Phoenix with his family in December, 1926. In 1941, he graduated with honors from Phoenix Union High School as a three-year letterman in Track & Field. His senior year he was captain of the Track team and undefeated one-mile State champion. Harold served three years in the U.S. Army in Europe during World War II and competed on the Army Track team there after the War. It was there that he became certain of his calling to the ministry & his commitment to serve the Lord. He graduated with distinction from Arizona State College in 1948 as a member of the Blue Key National Honorary. He also lettered three years there in Track & Field. As co-captain of the ASC Track team, he twice won the two-mile Border Conference championship. From 1948 to 1951, Harold attended seminary at Perkins School of Theology, SMU in Dallas, TX where he received his Bachelor of Divinity with high honors. There, he met his wife Ethyl Mae Jordan. They were married on December 26, 1950 in Ethyl’s hometown of Mason, TX.

For 38 years, Harold served nine communities as a pastor of the United Methodist Church in Arizona and Southern California, including the Methodist Church of the Good Shepherd in Kearny and the Hayden Community Church from 1972-1979. He retired in 1988. Throughout his adult life Harold was a devout Christian, dedicated to the ideal of enriching others in their personal relationships with God. When he came to know a person, he took that person into his heart and held them earnestly in prayer. He had many lifelong friendships, which enriched each member of his family. He loved family vacations, and, in retirement, traveling the world with his wife and friends. After retiring, Harold served 17 years as the first Historic Archivist of the Desert Southwest United Methodist Conference and was awarded for his service by the Bishop in 2002. He wrote (or co-wrote) and published A Dream Unfolding, a history of the Methodist movement in the Southwestern United States, and three books of poetry. In retirement, he was a member of the AZ State Poetry Society and of the Phoenix Friends of C.G. Jung. A devoted husband, loving father and grandfather, Harold welcomed each of his grandchildren into the

world with their own commemorative poem. In addition to his wife of 63 years, Ethyl, he is survived by his brother, David L Byrn (Diana) of Prescott; his three children, David K Byrne (Carolyn Jo) of Phoenix, Lael (Byrn) Seitz (Forrest) of Beaverton, OR and Karl Byrn (Frances) of Santa Rosa, CA; and five cherished grandchildren, Terell, Travis and Tyler Seitz, Megan Byrn, and Aubrey Byrne. His memorial service will be held at Phoenix First United Methodist Church, 5510 N. Central Ave in Phoenix on Saturday, Feb. 15, at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be designated in memory of Rev. Byrn to either First United Methodist Church at the above address, or to The Justa Center for Homeless Seniors, 1001 W. Jefferson St, Phoenix, AZ 85007.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

By now, many of you might have heard that three members of our Board of Supervisors have waived county policy to give over 20 percent raises to their administrative assistants. I want to tell you, unequivocally, that I did not support that measure and did not vote for those raises. I was joined by my fellow board member, Steve Miller, in

Rios: I did not support 20 percent raises One of the arguments by the majority who passed these pay raises was that it took too long to go through Human Resources for the position reclassification. To me, this argument falls flat, when you have a Human Resources Department which previously did a position survey for the Supervisors administrative assistant and found all but one of their salaries to be right on target for the marketplace. These pay raises are a direct slap in the face to those Pinal county employees, such as our law enforcement personnel, that have not seen a raise in six years. While we did pass a 2.5 percent increase for 2014, it is not even in the ballpark for three employees receiving a very generous 20 percent salary raise. It boggles the mind to think that these three employees, who carry on the same day-to-day duties as my assistant and Supervisor Miller’s assistant, merit such a high increase. I enjoy working with my four fellow supervisors. I feel that they have the best interests of the county at heart. But, this action of tossing policy for pay raises, while we are expected to encounter at $9,000,000 deficit at the end of this fiscal year is not wise, nor does it work in the best interest of the county. Sincerely, /s/ Pete RiosMember, District 1Pinal County Board of Supervisors

opposing the action. No matter what you call it, or, how you defend these pay raises, it comes down to one simple fact: our policy was not followed. The policy was thrown to the side for a select few to gain a large increase in their pay. As the policy making body of Pinal County, the Supervisor should be held to a higher standard when it comes to following the rules we pass. Unfortunately for the 1,988 employees of the county, this did not happen.

PASTOR’S CORNER

By Pastor Joe PalmerFellowship Baptist Church I once saw a sign which said, “You don’t have to be crazy to work here, but it helps.” Used in this way “crazy” is good! If I used the word “neurotic,” would I be saying the same thing? Someone “neurotic” has a “neurosis.” The symptoms of neuroses are elevated levels of anxiety, sadness, anger, irritability, mental confusion, low sense of self-worth, etc. An article in Wikipedia on Neuroses says, “Interpersonally, neurosis involves dependency, aggressiveness, perfectionism, schizoid isolation, socio-culturally inappropriate behaviors, etc.” “Hold it! Hold it! Are you saying I’m neurotic?” Well, I don’t know, but if you are you shouldn’t feel offended. You’re human, and you have fears and disappointments like every other person around. I just mention neuroses so that if you are, you will do something about it. What should you do if you’re unhappy and perhaps “neurotic”? A famous psychologist wrote, “‘I have frequently seen people become neurotic when

Just a little crazythey content themselves with inadequate or wrong answers to the questions of life’ (Jung, [1961] 1989:140). ‘The majority of my patients consisted not of believers but of those who had lost their faith’ (Jung, [1961] 1989:140).” - Wikipedia What do you trust in? If you have “inadequate or wrong answers to the questions of

life,” and/or you have “lost your faith,” let’s talk. It is totally reasonable to fully trust the One who made you, who sustains you, and who died on the cross for you. If you can come to this conclusion, then no neurosis need captivate you (though you may still work like crazy). Feel free to email me at [email protected].

Applications are also available at the Principal’s Office in each school and on the school’s website. The information households provide on the application will be used for the purpose of determining eligibility and verification of data. Applications may be verified at any time during the school year by school or other program officials. An application for free or reduced price benefits cannot be approved unless it contains complete eligibility information as indicated on the application and instructions. The household size and income criteria will be used to determine eligibility for free and reduced-price benefits. Phoenix – The Arizona Mining Association (AMA) honored Rep. Frank Pratt with their Legislator of the Year award, and Rep. T.J. Shope with their Freshman Legislator of the Year award. This was the

first time the association gave an award to state legislators. Pratt and Shope were honored for their support of the mining industry and associated bills that came before the Legislature.

Mining has been part of Arizona’s economy for more than a century. Its $4.6 billion impact on the state’s economy generates 49,800 jobs for Arizonans, according to the AMA.

Mining Industry honors two State Legislators

State Representative T.J. Shope

State Representative Frank Pratt

Pratt first started working as an Arizona rancher. He currently owns and operates a

pool construction firm in Casa Grande where is resides. Pratt is a second-generation Arizonan;

his grandfather arrived in the state in 1880 from Germany. Shope has worked for the ASU Disability Resource Center, the Arizona Republican Party and since 2008 has operated a family-owned, community supermarket in Coolidge where he lives. Shope’s grandfather was a miner in the copper industry for 32 years.

Experience the plants, food, crafts, culture and people of Southern Africa with a visit to Boyce Thompson Arboretum (BTA) on Sat., Feb. 22 . Pinal County gardeners and landscapers know they can always find a wide variety of colorful and drought-tolerant aloes and other plants from Southern Africa available for purchase at BTA. On Feb. 22, attend a 10 am talk by world traveler and herbal cuisine gourmande Mike Hills, to learn more. Mike will talk about historical cultural and herbal uses for South African plants, including many that grow well in Pinal County. Mike’s presentation includes a taste of common South African “bush tea”, from the native Buchu and Rooibos (pronounced “Roy-Bosh”) plants. Want to sample African cuisine for lunch? Organizers plan either a potjiekos competition or a Southern African curry lunch in the Picnic Area. Visit BTA’s website next week for more complete lunch details, or call Lacey at 520-689-2723. At 1 pm, the South African theme continues, with an African Drumming concert by Valley-based Raggadrum.

Plants, Food, Drumming of Africa, Feb. 22 at the Arboretum

Audience members will be invited to participate, using the artist’s drums and singing South African chants. Events are included

with $10 daily admission for adults, or, $5 for ages 5-12. Lunch will cost extra. For complete information, check out ag.arizona.edu/bta.
