Erev tov(Good evening), and welcome to Gaudiosa 2020, An Evening in The Holy Land. Each year, this joyous feastcelebrates St. Ignatiusjourney to founding the Society of Jesus. It brings together a diverse group of Jesuit parents, grandparents, alumni, and friends from our broader community. We gather tonight for a singular purpose --- to help support and sustain Jesuit High Schools financial aid program for deserving young men from across the Tampa Bay area. Centuries ago, St. Ignatius was profoundly shaped by his pilgrimage to The Holy Land where he devotedly walked in the footsteps of Christ our Lord. His transformative journey was only made possible through the charity of others. This evening, we are connected to that past, and to that spirit of giving which has helped develop regular boys into Men for Othersfor hundreds of years. I am extremely grateful for the generosity of our patrons, auction donors, and all of you who have joined us this evening. I especially want to thank the Event Committee and Volunteers. It has truly been an honor to work with you, and your selflessness has truly been an inspiration. I also want to thank Jesuits Development team who serve the school with integrity and excellence every day. My warmest wishes to you for a wonderful evening filled with friendship, good cheer, and fellowship. Shalom Aleichem! (Peace be upon you). Carol Jahnke Auction Chair

“Erev tov” (Good evening), and welcome to Gaudiosa 2020, “An Evening in The Holy Land.” Each year, this “joyous feast” celebrates St. Ignatius’ journey to founding the Society of Jesus. It brings together a diverse group of Jesuit parents, grandparents, alumni, and friends from our broader community. We gather tonight for a singular purpose --- to help support and sustain Jesuit High School’s financial aid program for deserving young men from across the Tampa Bay area. Centuries ago, St. Ignatius was profoundly shaped by his pilgrimage to The Holy Land where he devotedly walked in the footsteps of Christ our Lord. His transformative journey was only made possible through the charity of others. This evening, we are connected to that past, and to that spirit of giving which has helped develop regular boys into “Men for Others” for hundreds of years. I am extremely grateful for the generosity of our patrons, auction donors, and all of you who have joined us this evening. I especially want to thank the Event Committee and Volunteers. It has truly been an honor to work with you, and your selflessness has truly been an inspiration. I also want to thank Jesuit’s Development team who serve the school with integrity and excellence every day. My warmest wishes to you for a wonderful evening filled with friendship, good cheer, and fellowship. Shalom Aleichem! (Peace be upon you). Carol Jahnke Auction Chair

KEY EVENTS and PLACES IN THE LIFE OF ST. IGNATIUS OF LOYOLA

Each year Jesuit High School’s Gaudiosa honors the roots of Jesuit education by celebrating

locations that were important in the life of St. Ignatius Loyola, founder of the Jesuits.

LOYOLA: Born in 1491, Ignatius is the youngest of 11 children of a provincial noble.

POMPLONA: Wounded in the Battle of Pamplona in 1521, Ignatius experiences a spiritual conversion during his convalescence.

MONTSERRAT: Ignatius makes an all-night vigil at the shrine of Our Lady of Montserrat where he makes a vow of chastity and gives up his life as a knight, leaving his sword at Our Lady’s altar.

MANRESA: Ignatius’ ten-month penitential and spiritual experience in a Manresa cave inspires him to write the Spiritual Exercises, for which he is renowned throughout the world.

*HOLY LAND: In 1523, Ignatius achieves his pilgrimage to the Holy Land where he devotedly walked in the footsteps of Jesus. His transformative journey was only made possible through the charity of others.

BARCELONA, ALCALA, SALAMANCA: Ignatius studied Latin grammar in these cities to prepare for his university studies. Teaching catechism caused him to be imprisoned by the Inquisition in Alcala and Salamanca.

PARIS: While attending the University of Paris in 1528, Ignatius meets Francis Xavier and Peter Faber, who later helped him found the Society of Jesus (Jesuit Order). Ignatius graduated from the University of Paris as a “Master of Arts.”

LONDON: On holiday from his Paris studies, Ignatius traveled to London to beg alms from wealthy merchants.

MONTMARTRE: Ignatius and his companions take the first “Jesuit” vows.

VENICE: While in Venice, Ignatius and his companions attended to the sick and dying. It was in Venice in 1537 that Ignatius was ordained a priest.

LA STORTA: Ignatius experienced his second most significant transforming experience in La Storta, which led him to visit the Pope in Rome.

ROME: In 1540, the Pope approves the formation of the Society of Jesus by Ignatius.
