1. `Ā’īshā (RA) said, “Quraysh used to fast on `Ashūra in the pre-Islamic days. When the Messenger of Allāh (SAW) migrated to Madīnah, he observed this fast and commanded others to observe it. But when fasting during the month of Ramaḍān was made obligatory he left ̀ Āshūra (i.e. it was no longer obligatory); so whosoever wished to observe this fast, did so, and whosoever wished to leave it, did so.” [Bukhari & Muslim]2. Abū Musā al-Ash`arī (RA) said, “`Āshurā was one that the Jews respected and treated as a day of festival. The Messenger of Allāh (SAW) instructed us: ‘You should also observe fast on this day.’ [Bukhari & Muslim]3. Humayd b. `Abd ar-Raḥmān narrated that he heard Mu`āwi-yah b. Abū Sufyān (RA) say, while delivering a sermon on the pulpit on `Āshūra in the year he came for Hajj, “People of Madīnah, where are your scholars? I heard the Messenger of Allāh (SAW) say: ‘This is `Āshūra. Allāh has not made fasting on this day compulsory on you, but I am fasting. So whosoever wishes to observe the fast from amongst you, should do so, and whoever does not wish to observe it, may do so.’” [Bukhari & Muslim]4. Ibn `Abbās (RA) said: “When the Messenger of Allāh (SAW) came to Madīnah, he found the Jews fasting on `Āshūra. He asked: ‘What is this?’ They replied: ‘This is a righteous day. On this day Allāh saved the Israelites from their enemies, and so Moses, on this day, observed a fast.’ The Messenger of Allāh (SAW) said: ‘I have a greater right on Moses (AS) than you.’ So, he observed the fast and ordered the Muslims to also fast.’ [Bukhari & Muslim]5. Ar-Rab`ī b. Mu`awadh (RA) said: “The Messenger of Allāh (SAW) sent an envoy to the village of the Anṣār in the morning of `Āshūra announcing: ‘Whoever has eaten something should not eat but complete the fast, and whoever is observing the fast should com-plete it.’” She further said: “Since then we fasted regularly on that day and also make our sons fast. We used to make toys of wool for the boys and if anyone of them cried for food, we would give them these [toys] until it was time to break the fast.” [Bukhari & Muslim]6. `Abd Allāh b. `Umar (RA) narrated: “The Messenger of Allāh (SAW) observed the fast on `Āshūra and ordered others to also fast. When fasting during Ramaḍān was made compulsory, he left it.” `Ab-dullāh would not fast on this day unless it coincided with his [normal days of] fasting. [Bukhari, etc]7. Ibn `Abbās (RA) narrated: “I do not know the Messenger of Allāh (SAW) singling out any days for fasting, and considering it more excellent than another, except for this day [`Āshūra] and that month [Ramaḍān].” [Bukhari & Muslim]8. Abū Qatāda al-Anṣārī (RA) narrated that the Messenger of Allāh (SAW) said: “Fasting three days every month and the whole of Ramaḍān every year is a perpetual fast. The fast of the day of `Arafah, [I consider it to] expiate the sins of the preceding and the coming year. The fast of the day of `Āshūra, [I consider it to] expiate the sins of the preceding year.” [Muslim, etc]9. Ibn `Abbās (RA) narrated that when the Messenger of Allāh (SAW) fasted on `Āshūra and commanded that it be observed as a fast, they (his Companions) said to him: “Messenger of Allāh (SAW), it is a day which the Jews and Christians hold in high esteem.” Thereup-on the Messenger of Allāh (SAW) said: “When the next year comes, Allāh willing, we will observe fast on the ninth.” The Messenger of Allāh (SAW) died before the advent of the next year. [Muslim, etc]10. Abū Mūsā (RA) narrated that the people of Khaybar, most of whom were Jews, observed the fast on ̀ Āshūra and treated it as a fes-tive day. Their women would wear ornaments and beautiful dresses. The Messenger of Allāh (SAW) said: “You (only) observe fast on this day.” [Muslim]

SOCIAL MEDIA & PATIENCEFiqhOfSocial.Media - A Faith Based Guide to Navigating the Social Media Lifestyle

Engineering Patience ... In An Age of Instant GratificationI remember reading a book, and the kids in there were arguing over who got to sit near the window. I was confused. Why would they want to sit next to the window? I was accustomed to wanting to sit in the middle because that was directly in front of the vents blasting cold air from the AC. This was especially important if the car had been parked outside and had become an oven when you went to sit inside. My dad used to do something that would drive me crazy. He would start the car and not turn on the AC. He would let the fan run, and tell us we could roll down the windows (which doesn’t do much when its 95 degrees Fahrenheit). I would plead with him to turn on the AC on max, and he would just sit there and tell me to relax. Once, with the creativity only a kid could muster, I told him “Allah blessed us with AC, so turn it on.” He explained that he was trying to teach us to relax, and to be patient.

This is how parents are. They see the ease with which we enjoy the world, and we lose sight of hardships others went through. In many places in the world, especially 20 years ago, air conditioning in a car was a major luxury item instead of a standard part of life.

Now when someone complains about a YouTube video buffering too slow (or not fast enough for HD), I feel like yelling at them to try using a 28.8kbps dial-up connection – the kind I had to grow up with. In fact, a study of the viewing habits of 6.7 million people showed that people abandoned watching a video if it buffered for longer than two seconds. TWO SECONDS !! Social media has made everything quicker. What used to be a 24 hour news cycle is now barely 30 minutes. The half-life of a tweet is less than 3 hours. With this quickening of pace, our expectations have changed as well. If someone doesn’t reply to an email within a few hours we get upset. If they don’t respond to a text message within an hour, we get impatient. There is a manufactured hurry to each of these interactions.

Patience and gratitude go hand in handPatience, as we famously know from the hadith, is at the moment calamity strikes. To have patience in that moment requires a gratitude mindset. It comes down to being cognizant and intentional about each situation – Am I exercising patience? Am I being grateful to Allah? One way to reclaim this is to engineer moments of patience in our lives. Sit at a red light without touching your phone. It’s only 30 seconds, but we are at the point now where the mere thought of that is agonizing for some. Sit down with your kids and just be bored for a little while. Reflect on what is around you and enjoy the quiet moments.

The fast pace of technology is now the normThat’s not necessarily a bad thing. But it does mean that sometimes we just need to sit in the car for a few minutes before turning on the AC – to give ourselves a small reminder and lesson.
