3WE’RE LEADING BY EXAMPLEAs we approach the end of 2014, I can truly say that Ayrshire Chamber is ending on a ‘high’.

Since our last magazine, the first highlight must be the Chamber’s Business Week and Annual Awards in October. I attended the Launch event on Monday and was so inspired by the speakers who focused on innovation as a key driver to business success. Great networking and much business was done on Tuesday at our annual ‘market-place’. The buzz continued at Ladies Business Day (our own LBD!), and culminating with on Friday with the Purple Ice-cream Tasting and Competition – what a real treat!

Of course, the big celebrations came on Thursday evening with the Business Awards at Seamill Hydro. The standard of entries was extremely high so the judges had to work really hard for their dinner! This was a tremendous testimonial to the quality of businesses we have in Ayrshire and which enabled them to be showcased, given due recognition and inspire others to success. Congratulations to all our winners and finalists!

Prior to our own awards, three of our winners from 2013 became finalists in the first Scottish Chambers Honours Awards 2014 – First Independent Finance, Internet Anywhere and Craig Johnstone of Giglets Education. This was an opportunity for our local successes to receive recognition and profile beyond the local communities. Internet Anywhere won the Most Promising Business Honours, ensuring a champagne toast for the Ayrshire table!

The Chamber is non-political and the Team did a sterling job organising events for both sides of the Referendum campaign to present their cases to

members and guests prior to voting day on 18 September. We also ensured our voices were heard by contributing to the Smith Commission consultation on areas of devolution through Scottish Chambers of Commerce network. Our focus and efforts continue to be economic growth and sustainability for our local businesses.

Young people bring fresh eyes and ideas to the business together with experience of social media etc that growing businesses need. The Chamber is delighted to celebrate being the first Chamber in Scotland to receive the Good Practice Award for Investors in Young People. This accreditation gives recognition to the hard work which the Chamber Team has put in and for which they must be congratulated.

Supporting the sustainability and success of Prestwick Airport has been a key focus for the Chamber. We are pleased that its future is firmly acknowledged in the Scottish Government’s Strategic Vision for the Airport and we are committed to working with them.

I attended the joint Trump and Prestwick Airport conference with a number of colleagues from the Chamber on 14 November. I am really excited to see the first tangible sign of positive new business coming to the airport.

Onwards and upwards to an even more successful 2015 for Ayrshire businesses!

A former Ayrshire Chamber of Commerce Chief Executive was presented with an honorary membership in recognition of his work within the Chamber network.

Bob Leitch was presented his award at the Annual General Meeting of Ayrshire Chamber of Commerce on Wednesday 10th September by current CEO Val Russell.

A delighted Val said: “The Board unanimously agreed there was no one more deserving of this award and I have had the privilege of working with Bob and feel honoured to present his honorary membership.”

Bob has worked with Ayrshire Chamber of Commerce on two separate occasions; firstly from 1996 to 2000 as Executive Director and then he returned in 2004 to become Chief Executive, a post he held for four years.

Bob’s working career has spanned over five decades with a number of roles in the banking sector and Scottish Chambers of Commerce.

He said: “I have enjoyed 18 happy years in the Chamber of Commerce during which I have met many important and interesting people. It is an experience which has added greatly to my knowledge

and skills and one which I am for ever grateful.

“To receive this award is the icing on the cake.”

Association of British Ports’ Scottish Ports of Ayr and Troon and Ayrshire Chamber have teamed up to offer port companies a year’s guest membership to one the biggest business networks in the country.

The offer comes as thank you for their business and also aims to give the port business community a bigger voice.

James Cooper, ABP Chief Executive, explained: “We take our responsibility to the economic wellbeing of the region seriously. One of the best ways to do that is to support

our customers to make the connections they need to become even more successful.”

With a Chamber of Commerce membership, businesses can expand their reach and influence in professional networks and grow their business support services.

Ayrshire Chamber CEO, Val Russell, added: “We have worked closely with our Vice President Stuart Cresswell, Port Manager of Ayr and Troon, on the development of this initiative. We look forward to welcoming them into our membership.”

Munro Partnership are delighted to announce they are now offering bespoke Financial Planning Advice for charities, trusts and not-for-profit organisations.

Founded in 1982, the firm of Chartered Financial Planners have offices in Ayr, Glasgow and Hamilton. They are one of Scotland’s largest firms of Chartered Financial Planners.

The new division is being headed up by Linda Gilbert who will be assisted by fellow director Robin Dale - both Linda and Robin are Chartered Financial Planners. Linda is also a member of STEP. Further assistance will be provided by Senior Consultant Stephen Grimes and Client Manager Kelly Anderson.

Prior to the launch, the Company dealt with a number

of charities seeking advice on the management of their cash and invested assets. This was primarily driven by the low rates of return on cash coupled with the ongoing volatility on stockmarket investments. Similar enquires from the charity/not-for-profit sector led the Company to conclude that there was an opportunity to offer bespoke financial advice in this space.

Linda Gilbert commented: “We will be using our skills as Chartered Financial Planners to work with the trustees and board members, helping them to make confident and informed decisions on important issues such as cash management, investments, liquidity and risk.”

Small and medium businesses across the UK could face carrying out more complex calculations to work out holiday pay after a recent Employment Tribunal ruling.

The UK government has announced plans to create a taskforce to consider the consequences of the Employment Appeal Tribunal’s landmark ruling in Bear Scotland versus Fulton case requiring

employers to include overtime in calculating holiday pay.

Small businesses will require additional payroll and national insurance costs and are likely to feel the brunt of the changes if not given adequate support.

Adam Marshall, Executive Director of Policy and Public Affairs at the British Chambers of Commerce: “This ruling is damaging for businesses across the UK, firms could be at risk of incurring significant financial losses.”

However, the realisation of this ruling in practice may not be as financially crippling as initially thought. The additional elements only need to be included in holiday pay for the four weeks of annual leave guaranteed under EU law, and not the additional 1.6 weeks required under UK law.

Glasgow Prestwick Airport will become the European hub for Donald Trump air operations.

The airport will be the base for all Trump Aviation Operations, including his private Boeing 757 and Sikorsky 76B Helicopter.

The Trump Organisation has agreed to work with facility bosses and use its connections in the aviation and tourist industry to try and encourage more airlines to use the facility.

Mr Trump made the announcement with airport chief executive Iain Cochrane and South Ayrshire Council leader Bill McIntosh.

The New York-based businessman said: “We are thrilled to be partnering with Glasgow Prestwick Airport.

“They have a tremendous facility with a unique rich history.

“Their expert team and state of the art operation is perfectly aligned with our global client and member base that travel frequently to Scotland, home to many

of the finest golf resorts in the world including the legendary Trump Turnberry and Trump International Golf Links in Aberdeen.”

The Trump Organisation said the airport provided the “perfect gateway for private and corporate jet access” to Trump Turnberry, which is 20 miles away.

Mr Cochrane said: “Forging a new partnership between the airport and The Trump Organisation will undoubtedly be mutually beneficial to both parties however it will also bring significant opportunities for the region as more inbound visitors travel to visit the legendary Trump Turnberry Resort.”

South Ayrshire Council Leader, Bill McIntosh added it was a “positive development for both Glasgow Prestwick Airport and Trump Turnberry.”

Utopia Computers has become the first computer manufacturer to be officially accredited as a Living Wage Employer.

The accreditation is awarded by the Living Wage Foundation, and guarantees that all of the company’s staff will receive at least the Living Wage. This is 49% higher than the UK minimum wage for under 21s, and 18% higher for over 21s.

Utopia has said it will pay its entire staff, regardless of age, at least the Living Wage.

Julie McGahan, Programme Manager for the Scottish Living Wage Accreditation Initiative said: “Utopia Computers are leading the way in Scotland by joining the Living Wage Employer movement.

“As well as being the first Living Wage Employer in Kilmarnock, they are the first computer manufacturer in Scotland to make this commitment to their staff. It’s our hope that other

businesses will follow suit, and recognise that the Living Wage makes a difference- not only for the individual, but for society and for business”.

The computer retailer’s Director, Craig Hume, said it had “made a commitment to our team to adopt the Living Wage framework as soon as it became financially viable”.

“There is a misconception that working for a smaller company automatically means you are lower paid, this is certainly not always the case. Rather than looking solely to the government to increase the minimum wage, I think that the responsibility also lies with companies who are seeing growth and paying their employees appropriately.”

20 year old, Cameron McGill, Technician at Utopia, added: “The living wage increase has provided my family and I more stability. It gives us a healthy amount of income to live comfortably, rather than just getting by, payday to payday.”

UTOPIA CELEBRATES LIVING WAGE COMMITMENT

LIVING WAGE...WHAT IS IT?• An hourly rate set independently and updated

annually

• The Living Wage is calculated according to the basic cost of living in the UK

• The current National Living Wage is £7.85 an hour

• Employers choose to pay the Living Wage on a voluntary basis

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?Good for Business

Two thirds of employers reported a significant impact on recruitment and retention within their organisation. 70% of employers felt that the Living Wage had increased consumer awareness of their organisation’s commitment to be an ethical employer.

Good for Families

75% of employees reported increases in work quality as a result of receiving the Living Wage.

50% of employees felt that the Living Wage had made them more willing to implement changes in their working practices and made them more likely to adopt changes more quickly.

INTERNATIONAL TRADE NEWS

In 2012, Ayrshire Chamber of Commerce and Industry teamed up with GlaxoSmithKline to provide funding for local businesses to offer Modern Apprenticeships to young people.

O’Neil’s Gas Services Ltd successfully applied to receive funding to allow them to hire an apprentice over a four year period.

Robbie McLarnon, 19, is currently in his second year of his apprenticeship and alternates his weeks working and attending

City of Glasgow College.

The Chamber caught up with Robbie to find out how he was getting on. He said: “I’m really enjoying it. I saw the job advert in the local paper, researched the role and then applied.

“I’ll be in the office about half past seven in the morning and will fill out job sheets from the previous day and then find out what jobs we have today.

“I’m being trained as a technician, which is the maintenance repairs and servicing of boilers.”

Brian O’Neil, company Director, added: “Robbie’s working well with the team and we’re kept up-to-date with his progress at college, where he is also doing very well.”

Being one of the world’s largest fast growing economies, with a growth rate over 5%, India is a must for UK companies looking to expand.

This growth is driven by India’s rapidly growing middle class, and because India has a population of 1.2 billion people, these emerging consumers are expected to amount to a staggering 267 million by 2015.

Whether it’s selling luxury and branded goods to India’s aspirational consumers or setting up manufacturing operations in one of India’s colossal new Industrial corridors there are opportunities to be found for nearly every company.

In December the UK India Business Council will open their third Business Centre exclusively for UK companies in India, meaning it has also never been easier for UK companies to do business in India.

GROWING THE DESIGN BUSINESS FROM THEGARDENPrestwick based design and branding company atom is about to hit a huge milestone. March next year sees its 8th birthday.

A momentous time for Tom McCrorie, who runs his design business from his home office in his garden. atom is also the only South Ayrshire designer to be approved as part of the prestigious DBA (Design Business Association).

The Design Business Association (or DBA) is the trade organisation for the design industry in the UK. In recent years, the association has been placing great emphasis on promoting standards and best practice within the design industry, offering a wealth of information to clients in need of advice and guidance.

Member agencies are required to work to a strict code of conduct, in place to protect clients’ interests.

By becoming a member of the DBA and joining its directory of recommended design agencies, atom demonstrates a commitment to supporting clients in getting as much as possible from the agency and the expertise of its staff.

Recent figures have shown that for every £100 invested by design aware clients they can expect to get an average return of £240.

John Scarrott, Membership Director of the DBA, said: “We are thrilled to have atom in the DBA. There are an increasing number of sole traders, and small boutique agencies building up across the country, producing fantastic work.” Clients looking for a high calibre design consultancy need look no further than a DBA member.” atom has been a member for three years now. atom’s key services include design and branding, web design and build, e-commerce, iOS game design and build, packaging design and logo design.

Speaking from his home office Tom commented, “Often design is ‘sold’ to clients by sales people with sales targets driven to keep them in offices with lots of staff. My focus is on the clear benefits that good design can bring to your company, and I don’t need a fancy office and lots of staff. My clients are not just local clients but as far as Australia and South Africa and my largest client is the UK government, but don’t let that put you off i.e. the fact that they are a huge client.

I am just as capable of getting involved in smaller branding and design projects for more local clients.

I essentially help you to ‘brand your brand’. And there is a difference. Too many designers don’t know the difference.”

Now under new ownership, The Herbary, Troon, is planning for another 25 years in the seaside town.

New proprietor, Claire O’Donnell, took control of the boutique in September this year. It is also her first ever business venture so it was one she had to be sure was worth taking that first step.

After doing her research, The Herbary was ‘too good an opportunity to pass her by’ and on 1st September, Claire took the plunge and called the shop her own.

Claire, originally from Troon but now lives in Glasgow, comes from a retail background. After graduating from the University of Glasgow in 2001, she has worked for Arcadia, M&Co and most recently Slaters.

“Retail is just what I know,” explains Claire, who hopes to bring her buying, planning and customer service experiences to The Herbary to build on an already solid business model.

“I want customers to be excited when they enter the shop, their eyes darting from one display to another, and to be able to feel relaxed in our luxurious shopping environment.”

Claire’s parents still live in her childhood home in Troon and although Claire now lives in Glasgow she feels right back at ‘home’ driving into Troon every day.

“I always knew we were lucky to grow up in Troon but as a child you don’t appreciate how lucky. Now that I have my own business in Troon, I realise that the independent shops, restaurants and of course the ‘fresh sea air’ make it a great place to be.”

The Herbary will also be launching a new range of jewellery from local Troon designer, Euan McWhirter. Euan began his career designing for jewellery legends Erickson Beamon. Euan embarked upon creating his own vision of luxury, launching his collection in 2010.

Euan is excited to launch his collection at The Herbary and to be ‘back in Troon, his hometown’

Claire has joined the Ayrshire Chamber of Commerce and hopes to draw upon the networking opportunities offered by their other members and has already hosted a shopping evening with the Troon Ladies Circle showing a support to the local community.

Taste Ayrshire has taken to the water in a partnership to promote the work of the area’s food and drink producers.

Fine Food hampers filled with a selection of food and drink produced in Ayrshire can be found on the Clyde Challenger – a 60ft ocean racing yacht that is used for corporate days out.

The cruiser, owned by Lewis Learning, decided to offer their guests a little something extra when they were on board and Taste Ayrshire’s hamper was exactly that.

Taste Ayrshire board member Howard Wilkinson explained that the hampers offer a little experience of Ayrshire and are proving to be a very successful addition to the group’s promotion.

He said: “The Hampers are proving to be a flexible asset for Taste Ayrshire. Those who get one get to experience the great produce that is available here in Ayrshire.

“We were delighted with the partnership with Lewis Learning and it’s great to see

the hampers are proving to be a hit with his customers.”

Glenn Porter of Lewis Learning added: “Our involvement with Taste Ayrshire and their food hampers has allowed us to provide our corporate guests with something that extra bit special.

“During their trips out on our first generation round the world Clipper race yacht, Clyde Challenger’s guests have been able to enjoy fresh, local produce.  Our guests really enjoy sampling the local produce and there is rarely much left following a day out.”

The hamper contains a variety of produce from the area and can be ordered by visiting the website tasteayrshire.co.uk

TASTE AYRSHIRE TAKES TO THE SEAS!

LOOKING FORWARD TO ANOTHER 25 YEARS

UP4LEARNINGUp4learning is the brainwave of experienced primary teacher, Gayle McCrorie. After many years of teaching in the state and private sector, Gayle discovered a gap in the market. Tutoring was being aimed at secondary school children, whilst interest clubs were being aimed at primary school children.

With her Primary school background, Gayle knew from personal experience that parents of younger children were often frustrated by the gaps in their child’s learning and struggled to fill them through homework tasks, which often ended in tantrums – from both parties!  Identifying

this gap in the market Gayle started up4learning, which offers tutoring to children aged 7-11 years.

Up4learning operates at Gayle’s studio in Prestwick offering the benefit of tutoring in the studio that is completely distraction-free, ensuring the children can focus fully on the tasks in front of them.

The project has been that successful that Gayle is now opening another studio in Troon in 2015.

Gayle ensures the sessions are fun and full of active learning by matching children alongside others working on similar tasks.  Sessions are capped at four children ensuring all children receive the time and attention they deserve.

In July 2014 the UK Government launched  strategic project to select the site for the UK’s first spaceport.  The aim is to ensure the UK space industry can grow strongly by having a domestic capability for launching the new generation of small satellites using the latest horizontal launch space vehicles.    The Government is aiming to select the site in mid-2015 after receiving detailed proposals from the competing sites.  These include Newquay in Cornwall and the Moray Firth airfields Lossiemouth and Kinross.

Prestwick however is the most developed and perhaps the most capable location.  Prestwick Airport was established in 1935 as a site for elementary flight training for ab-initio RAF pilots as part of the UK Government’s response to the military build-up in Germany ahead of the Second World War. The airport site was selected due to the consistently favourable weather conditions experienced in this area of South Ayrshire. The airfield is surrounded by high ground - all four quadrants - and this affords it protection from the vast

majority of adverse weather phenomena.

This unique Ayrshire microclimate has enabled the airfield to benefit from favourable cloud bases and excellent surface visibility. This factor contributed to it becoming the dominant transatlantic ferry port for US and Canadian built aircraft entering the European war theatre. It subsequently became the primary gateway for long-haul transatlantic passenger operations into Scotland. The airfield was heavily developed with a full concrete base underpinning its 3000m runway and extensive hard standing. A broad aerospace and engineering industry was established in the area to provide aircraft build, modification and repair capabilities, emerging in the post war era as Scottish Aviation before being absorbed into British Aerospace in 1977. A further 1,905m cross runway was later added.

Prestwick and its local population have welcomed many types of aircraft operations over the years including military fighters, large wide body jets and the largest specialist transports and Antonovs. It was also a frequent training location for Concorde flight crews giving the local airspace controllers experience at defining and controlling special aircraft inbound and outbound trajectories as well as deconflicting flight paths with other commercial and military traffic.

Transport links to Prestwick have been progressively developed since its formation with a mainline rail station on site, fuel offloading siding and unbroken motorway links directly from the airport to the backbone

of the UK’s motorway network. Recent development of the M77 and Glasgow M74 southern orbital extension means that by road Prestwick is now only 30 minutes from the centre of Glasgow, 1 hour 20 minutes from Edinburgh Airport, less than 2 hours from the border with England and only 6 hours 15 minutes from London Heathrow.

Prestwick’s bid for this critical future in aviation is being led on behalf of the airport and South Ayrshire Council by Stuart Mcintyre, grandson of the original founder Group Captain DF Mcintyre.  Integrating every aspect of Prestwick’s wide ranging capability is enhanced by his broad appreciation of the airports industrial and operational history.

Prestwick continues to be engaged in passenger operations, the structure of the airline industry currently favours the bases at Glasgow and Edinburgh with Prestwick playing a more strategic aerospace and aviation role as a base of freight, strategic diversion and hijack, executive transport, military transit, search and rescue operations as well as maintaining a strong industrial capability both on the airfield and in the immediate vicinity.

Mr Mcintyre explained: “With its favourable meteorological patterns, over sea take-off paths, substantial developed airfield, excellent local skills base, direct motorway and rail links and attractive business and industrial footprint, Prestwick is well placed to launch the UK’s first Spaceport and support the growth of the UK’s space industry.

21BUSINESS MENTORING: AN OBJECTIVE VIEW OF YOUR BUSINESSDo you have aspirations of growth for your Business? As a growing business, you may have lots of ideas and plans for the future, but may lack the skills, experience or confidence to put them into action.

Maybe you'd benefit from an objective view of your company, to help you realise what your goals should be? Perhaps you want to learn alongside an experienced business person? Or maybe you just want to develop new skills and expand your network of contacts? A business mentor

could help you do all of these things.

Rhona Brown, Business Mentoring Executive at Ayrshire Chamber explained: “The Mentoring scheme is open to all businesses in Ayrshire who have been trading for a minimum of one year and have a turnover in excess of £100k.

“Working with a mentor allows a ‘fresh pair of eyes’ to look over your business and offer advice or direction from an entirely independent point of view.”

The objective of Business Mentoring is to help growing businesses and it is available to business people who have aspirations to grow. Mentors will work with you in a non-judgemental relationship. They will respect your views, and although they may put forward suggestions, every decision you take will be your own.

For more information on this FREE service, call Rhona Brown 01292 678666.

JOANNE ROBINSON, CEO THE LITTLE ART

SCHOOL CO LTD.

TESTIMONIAL

”“ The Little Art School Co has grown hugely since it opened its doors over a year ago. My mentor, Pamela Anderson, has been a source of solid advice and a listening ear as we struggled to overcome the hurdles associated with developing a small business. Being able to step out of the day to day running of one's business and spend a couple of hours thinking about the business has been extremely valuable.

EDUCATION

CREATIVE CAREERS

MOCK INTERVIEWS

Queen Margaret Academy, Art & Design Department recently hosted a Creative Industries Event for their S2 pupils. The aim was to raise awareness of Creative Industries as a career path.

Pupils attended the Art and Design Department in the morning and had the opportunity to visit various stalls with artists, designers and representatives from Further and Higher Education Institutions. Pupils heard presentations from invited guests and then had the opportunity to ask questions and look through folios and examples of work. Pupils left the department feeling inspired and armed with a wealth of knowledge from this exciting and memorable event.

40 pupils selected from Cumnock, Doon and Kyle Academy recently attended a mock interviews event held in the Aviator Suite of Prestwick Airport organised by Ayrshire Chamber of Commerce.

Following months of in school preparation pupils were chosen to attend the event to help prepare them more for the world of work. The day began with a motivational speech from Dr Peter Hughes who promoted careers within the engineering industry.

Pupils were then given the opportunity to go through a mock interview with local employers before taking part in group assessments set by South Ayrshire Council and Stellar UK Ltd. After a rest over lunch pupils were then taken through college course options by Ayrshire College.

Pupils commented that they felt they had gained more confidence and felt more prepared for the real world of interviews.

Special thanks to the Army, Ayrshire College, Dr Peter Hughes, Glasgow Prestwick Airport, NHS, Police Scotland, SFA, South Ayrshire Council, Stellar UK Ltd, RAF and UTC Aerospace Systems

Glebe Primary recently held an employer event for their Primary 2 pupils, ably supported by P7 guides, The “World of Work” afternoon formed part of the topic “People Who Help Us in our Community”.

We were very lucky to have a wide variety of businesses and services represented on the day. Pupils carried out their personal research, asking questions and using their ICT skills taking photographs and videos.

Our visitors included, Mr Truss, Truss Dental in Irvine, Mr Travers, Minister of Irvine Old Parish Church, Hilary Kerr Simpsinns, Ronnie McGinlay & Marion Campbell Fire Scotland, Lifeguards from KA Leisure, Carly Kirkwood Specsavers Irvine, Options for independence, 1st Alliance Credit Union Ltd and N.A.C. Catering Services.

The pupils thoroughly enjoyed finding out about different professions

and services and the opportunity gave them a real life context for learning.

The feedback from our visitors was also extremely positive and, although perhaps a little nervous at the thought of being interviewed by such young children, they found the experience enjoyable and were very impressed by the children’s abilities.

The day was a terrific success. It is important to help children, even at this early stage, to understand the options and opportunities in the world of work and to provide them with goals and encourage a motivation to learn for the future. The feedback from the pupils was very positive - “The fire fighters were good”. “It was a fun afternoon”. Lola

We are very grateful to everyone who attended and are looking forward to future opportunities to engage children in real life contexts”.

Keen fourth, fifth and sixth year pupils from 12 secondary schools from all over Ayrshire took the opportunity to find out more about careers in the NHS at a special Awareness Day at University Hospital Ayr.

The event is one of several initiatives and programmes through which NHS Ayrshire & Arran supports local schools, where 120 pupils attended.

Dr Martin Cheyne, Chairman of Ayrshire and Arran NHS Board, commented: “We hope that these young people found the day worthwhile and realised the variety of careers available in the NHS.”

The pupils took part in interactive information sessions and competed in an inter-schools challenge. Belmont Academy emerged victorious at the end of the morning session, while Wellington School took the title in the afternoon. Both received a trophy donated by the education teams from the three local authorities in Ayrshire.

AYRSHIRE PUPILS ARE TOP CLASS

Fhionn of Largs Academy completed his work experience at Scott Engineering Co Ltd. We feel the placement is a very worthwhile exercise for young people as it gives them an insight into engineering and a good grounding as to whether they really want to pursue a career in this field.

“Fhionn had the opportunity to learn various skills under direct supervision such as milling and turning, grinding and welding. He enjoyed the variation in tasks and the practical experience we provided him.”

Brian Woods - General Manager, Scott Engineering, Stevenston.

FHIONN ENGINEERED HIS WAY INTO WORK EXPERIENCE

During my work experience at Ayrshire Chamber I gained knowledge in many different areas of the business industry and an insight into what happens within the Chamber.

As my work experience was during Ayrshire Business Week, I attended the Business to Business Exhibition and learned how businesses trade and promote their company. The social media and advertising companies caught my attention as they were different and a business idea I hadn’t thought of before. The next day I helped out with the Ladies Lunch during registration and then heard from Marjorie Calder from The Big Partnership about succeeding in business.

I rounded off my week at the ‘Cream of Ayrshire’ ice cream competition, so my week has been about food as well as business which can’t be bad.

This has been an excellent opportunity to understand a working environment as well as getting an insight into the Chamber of Commerce. I am interested in a career within the business sector so it has been very worthwhile.

WORK EXPERIENCE

John Rae of Kilmarnock Academy attended Hood Motors, Kilmarnock, for his placement. Lacking confidence, a pre-arranged visit to the garage reassured John and he had a great week. You can tell by the smile on his face how much he enjoyed and benefited from his placement.

A common problem for pupils is a lack of urgency in applying for placements particularly with ‘self-founds.’ Pupils and parents fail to realise that a couple of months to organise these places is not long in the business world. Work experience is mentioned in June allowing three months for organisation.

Work experience is a lot of work for the organisers but to see the confidence in pupils after a successful week and an excellent report makes it all worthwhile.

Kathryn of Belmont Academy attended Rotherwood Furniture on her work experience.

“Kathryn was a real pleasure and was able to participate in many designs for customers including one of my own contract accounts where Kathryn was allowed input.

We enjoyed having such an enthusiastic young person working with us, after all that is where we find our stars of the future!!”

The Scottish base for the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust was opened at Largs Yacht Haven on the Firth of Clyde by Dame Ellen MacArthur.

The new base marks the expansion for the ten year old charitable trust, based in Cowes Isle of Wight and set up by Dame MacArthur, to assist young people recovering from cancer and leukaemia through sailing.

The Trust has taken up residence at the 700 berth marina and plans to increase the number of young people coming through the recovery and confidence building programme to 200 by 2017.

“We have been overwhelmed by the welcome and support we have received at Largs, enthused chief executive Frank Fletcher. “We selected our new Scottish home carefully and are delighted by the excellent facilities at the Yacht Haven as well as the fabulous sailing waters that

we will be sailing in.  We could not have asked for more”.

“We are very honoured to have been selected by Dame Ellen and the Trust for their new base,” commented Yacht Haven director Carolyn Elder. “We are hugely supportive of the great work being carried out and look forward to working closely both the young people and the Trust team to aid their expansion.”

Ayrshire audio and video production specialist Tosh Lubek was among the shortlist for The Jerusalem Awards earlier this year – promoting Christian involvement in broadcasting.

Tosh Lubek had teamed up with Rev. Kenneth Elliott to produce a radio feature called ‘Dear Diary’ – an observer’s daily recollection of an observer of the events leading up to the crucifixion of Jesus written & presented by Rev. Elliott and produced by Tosh.

The pair did not lift a trophy at the awards this time, they were proud

to be recognised in such esteem company. Tosh said: “It was quite an accolade to be shortlisted, especially along with the likes of BBC Radio 2, showing that small independents can compete on a national stage.

Despite not winning, 2014 has been a very good year for the pair having been shortlisted twice; first for “The Prayer Room” in The Sandford St Martin Awards and then for “Dear Diary” in the Jerusalem Awards 2014.

In the last two years winners in the Sandford St Martin and Jerusalem Awards have included well-known names like David Suchet, Simon Schama, Melvyn Bragg and BBC TV and Radio.

Volunteers have been offering a warm and friendly welcome to visitors at Prestwick Airport over the last month.

The volunteers are enthusiastic and dedicated local people who provide a warm welcome and information to visitors to the area, giving their free time, with the ultimate aim of encouraging more people to visit the area and stay longer.

Ashley Brant, Tourism Champion Volunteer, from Ayr, said: “My experience as a volunteer at Prestwick Airport was both intriguing and as a student helped me understand more about the airport and why people travel to and from Prestwick Airport.

“We answered enquiries from passengers about airport facilities as well as some attractions in Ayrshire and Arran, there was a great interest on the Isle of Arran.”

Further induction sessions and volunteering opportunities will be taking place throughout November and December, so to get involved and sign up visit www.ayrshire-arran.org or email: [email protected].

The Loudoun Castle Project has submitted a planning in principle application to East Ayrshire Council for the creation of a two phased £450 million holiday and leisure destination that will bring up to 2,500 much needed jobs to the area.

The ambitious plan will see the 610-acre former family theme park transformed into an all-weather resort featuring 450 luxury lodges, 12 glamping pitches, a lake and leisure development, including indoor sports facilities and an indoor subtropical water park. The site will also feature a brand new Loudoun distillery.

Loudoun Castle itself will be stabilised and leading conservation specialists will be assessing what can be achieved beyond stabilisation.

Timescales are subject to planning but if successful, work would begin in 2016 with an anticipated opening during 2018 and phased development beyond.

David Mace, Chairman of The Loudoun Castle Project, said: “A development of this size and scale will provide Scotland and Ayrshire with significant long term economic

benefits both in terms of jobs and tourism.”

Research conducted and subsequent reports provided by an independent specialist firm reveals a strong catchment area for the development with more than 4.9 million people within a three hour drive of Loudoun.

Nick Laister, senior director at RPS Planning & Development, which is submitting the planning application on behalf of The Loudoun Castle Project, said: "I am delighted to be submitting a planning application for a development that is going to realise that vision and have such a significant positive economic impact on the area.

The clear commitment and pre-planning investment by the project team to secure planning permission for the development of the site has been led by private investment firm EIF.

Plans for a 1,025 home residential development will feature a mix of house styles including starter homes, bungalows and three, four and five-bedroom family homes.

Barr Environmental have pledged their support to Zero Waste Scotland’s commitment to demonstrate consistent standards for business waste and promoting the benefits of business efficiency to its customers.

Zero Waste Scotland announced two new signatories to its industry standard at its 13th annual Scottish Resources Conference, delivered in partnership with the Chartered Institute of Wastes Management.

Barr Environmental, based in Ayr, joined 18 other organisations already signed up to the voluntary commitment, which requires signatories to demonstrate consistent standards for business waste collections and excellent customer service, including promoting the benefits of resource efficiency to its customers.

Zero Waste Scotland is now urging other firms in the industry to follow suit in signing up to the commitment, which is for any organisation involved in providing waste or resource management services to customers in Scotland including local authorities, private and third sector resource organisations.

Iain Gulland, Director, Zero Waste Scotland, said: “I’m delighted to welcome both Barr Environmental and it’s fitting to announce this news on the first day of the Scottish

Resources Conference, where the focus is on ensuring a sustainable resources industry.

“Zero Waste is no longer an aspiration; it is a necessity for the future economic and environmental prosperity of Scotland.

“All of us have a vested interest in maximising the value of the resources we use in our daily lives.

Gordon Whiteford, Barr Environmental Limited, said: “We have a long-standing relationship with a number of Scottish local authorities and private sector companies, and by signing up to Scotland’s Resource Sector Commitment we are making a strong statement about our pledge to continue to provide our clients with high quality resource management services in tandem with an outstanding customer experience.”

To sign up to Scotland’s Resource Sector Commitment and to hear first-hand from current signatories, visit www.zerowastescotland.org.uk/ResourceCommitment

A major expansion – in terms of space and jobs – is the latest chapter in an Irvine Bay success story in client contact and servicing business Voca.

Voca moved in to its first office suite at i3 Ayrshire Innovation Centre just over a year ago, when it took 1200 sq. ft. of office space for its contact management business.

Move forward one year to October 2014

and Voca is moving 200 yards to its newly refurbished 5000 sq. ft. of flag ship office. Jobs created - from 28 in March 2014 to 65presently, and targeting 100 employees by summer 2015.

The company’s business is Client Contact Management and Servicing –a business service provider to large and small businesses which need additional resource and know how to succeed in the increasingly competitive internet based era.

Patrick Wiggins, Chief Executive of Irvine Bay Regeneration Company, said: “This is another example of the benefits that progressive and expanding businesses, such as Voca, can gain from the infrastructure offered at i3. It is good that through this, their expansion can be

encouraged and accommodated within the area.”

Jonathan Woodbridge, Managing Director of Voca said: “We help clients transform their business and how they connect with their customers and throughout the process help them build both long term and profitable relationships.”

With some grant funding from North Ayrshire Council, Voca has introduced its managers to new ways of thinking about themselves and their business, is working on its ISO 9001 accreditation to demonstrate in depth systems of quality management and has created its own eye catching if somewhat quirky brand image.

VOCA TELLS AN i3 SUCCESS STORY

The Japanese do it. Filipinos do it. Italians do it every afternoon. A well-regulated nap is a far better way to recharge your brain than sugar or coffee, and has fantastic benefits for your health. But the secret to getting it right is all in the timing.

Generally speaking, the best time to nap is around the middle of the day, between 12-3pm, so as not to disrupt night time sleep.

During sleep, our brain moves through a number of stages and cycles, and the point at which we wake up impacts dramatically on our cognitive state. This means that it’s worth adapting your snooze to the tasks that lie ahead.

15-20 minutes

A brief sleep of 15-20 minutes will help you regain some alertness and can refresh your motor skills, so if you need to look lively or do something fiddly, like playing an instrument, this is the nap for you.

30-60 minutes

Be warned: napping for more than 30 minutes can make you groggy. But it does have the benefit of sending you into “slow-wave” sleep, which can help to improve your memory and sharpen your decision-making skills.

Irvine Housing Association has launched a new customer service centre – an extension of the 24/7 service already available to Riverside Group customers.

The new Irvine-based CSC is part of a wider team based in Riverside’s head office and this will allow the teams to support each other and resulting in a quicker response to customers.

Nicola Thom, Executive Director (Operations) at IHA said, “Since joining Riverside we have been reviewing the range of services that we offer to our customers, particularly offering greater choices on how they access our services. Until now we

were only able to offer IHA customers an emergency repairs service out of hours. Now our customers can access our full range of services 24/7.”

Paul Hillard, Managing Director at IHA said, “We are delighted to launch an extension to the CSC here in Scotland, and the potential to expand the team as the service develops is an exciting prospect.

“This is another example of our continued growth as part of Riverside, offering new services to our customers, while seeking to create job opportunities here in Irvine, which has some of the highest levels of unemployment in the country.”

Two Ayrshire Businesses picked up prizes in the SLTN awards in November.

Buzzworks Holdings and Si! collected the winning awards in their category – Si! took home the gold in the Family Outlet of the Year award sponsored by Britvic and Buzzworks was named Independent Multiple Operator of the Year.

Si! was shortlisted for the Britvic sponsored award alongside The Leadburn Inn (Midlothian) and Tony Macaroni (Livingston). MC for the night was none other than Glasgow comedian Kevin Bridges, who announced Si! as the winner to ensure another SLTN Award came back to Ayrshire.

SimpsInns owners Malcolm and Karen Simpson attended the glittering awards evening and were delighted to receive the trophy.

“Si! has been open for almost two years now and we are fortunate to have such a strong and passionate team that has helped the business grow and evolve into the vibrant venue it is today,” explained Malcolm Simpson.

“This wonderful trophy is for all the team for it is their hard work and attention to detail which has made this possible. We would like to thank sponsors Britvic and organisers SLTN for this award and all our customers who enjoy coming to Si! We look forward to welcoming you to Si! as we move towards a busy Christmas period.”

Si! Café:Bar:Restaurant opened in March 2013 after a £2million rebuild on the site of the former Golf Hotel on the Kilwinning Road in Irvine. Within months the stunning venue picked up the ‘Inspiration Award’ at the SLTN Awards.

Prestwick based Buzzworks Holdings are delighted to have won the Independent Multiple Operator award at the recent Scottish Licensed Trade news awards, the annual Oscars of the licensed trade in Scotland.

This is the third time that the company, who own seven venues across Ayrshire including Elliots, Scotts Troon and Lido have won the prestigious award.

Director Kenny Blair said: “I am immensely proud of our team of people that help make our business successful and the fact that an Ayrshire based company can compete and win awards such as this against national competition.”

UK businesses are not trying hard enough to keep their workers safe, says the Sentencing Council, and should be fined up to £20m for “corporate manslaughter” if their negligence leads to death.

The government body, which advises judges on appropriate sentencing, says that existing fines are too small to hurt most companies financially and so fail to incentivise them to improve their safety measures.

This will extend to food-related violations, with the companies whose food health and safety offences prove fatal could be fined up to £10m.

The guidelines, which are still in draft stage, will be opened up to public consultation in order to gather the perspectives of those working in industry.

“We want to ensure that these crimes don’t pay and these businesses that put people at risk by flouting their responsibilities are undercutting those that maintain proper standards and do their best to keep people safe,” said Michael Caplan QC, a member of the Sentencing Council.”
