As part of the Murdoch Career Spine, you may have access to:

Mandurah campusOur Mandurah campus offers an exceptional learning experience for students studying Nursing, Counselling, Creative Arts Therapies and our OnTrack enabling course. Students have access to a range of facilities, including a student common area, library and computer labs. Nursing students also experience learning in our state-of-the-art nursing simulation suites.

Rockingham campus Our Rockingham campus offers a strong learning community with a focus on research and our University enabling courses, such as OnTrack and TLC110 Learning for Tomorrow. Chiropractic ClinicIf you’re a Chiropractic student, as you progress through your degree you’ll learn to treat real patients in our on-campus clinic. This clinic houses a rehabilitation centre, physiological therapeutics facility, consulting rooms and a digital radiographic suite.

Engineering Pilot Plant Our nationally renowned Bayer Pilot Plant is where our Electrical Engineering students learn real-world skills. This engineer’s playground is one of only a few in Australia and the only one of its kind in WA.

IT Innovation Hub Step inside the future in our new teaching laboratory. Our IT Innovation Hub is fitted with the latest mixed and augmented reality equipment, industrial technologies and an operational data centre. Within this space, you’ll have the freedom to get creative, collaborate, prototype and experiment.

real-worldSports science facilityOur $4 million sports science facility houses a dedicated exercise physiology laboratory, complete with a climate and altitude chamber; a performance laboratory, complete with a motion capture system and running track; a rehabilitation, strength and conditioning laboratory, complete with a fully equipped gym with Olympic lifting facilities; and a Mind and Body Lab, complete with a fitness testing area and a DEXA machine, which you can use to scan body fat, bone and muscle mass.

SimLabTM

Make the most of our SimLabTM technology to practise your teaching skills in a virtual classroom environment with avatars who respond in real time to your instructions. We were the first university in Australia to offer a simulated teaching experience to Teaching students.


Law Moot CourtIn our Herbert Smith Freehills Electronic Moot Court, students can try hypothetical cases in a courtroom environment and compete with other law schools from around the world, thanks to the latest video satellite technology.

Psychology ClinicIf your goal is to become a registered psychologist, you’ll need to study an undergraduate degree in Psychology and then continue your studies at postgraduate level. At postgraduate level, you may have the opportunity to work with real clients at our on-campus psychology clinic.

Media Arts CentreOur Media Arts Centre houses industry-standard facilities, which include a digital television studio, sound stage, control room, audio studio, four radio studios, a newsroom and a number of professionally equipped editing suites.

Nexus TheatreThis theatre space provides students with an area to hone their craft in performance or production. Home to some of WA’s best emerging talents, this venue hosts community, musical, cultural and theatrical events, which can give students extra opportunities for work experience.

Nursing simulation suitesOur Mandurah and Perth campuses offer state-of-the-art nursing facilities, which house fully equipped clinical teaching wards, treatment areas and simulation suites. If you study Nursing, you’ll practise your skills on lifelike, high-tech mannequins with heart, lung and digestive sounds, and other realistic features.

Veterinary hospital and working farmsOur Perth campus is home to a working farm, veterinary clinic, an exotic animal clinic, and a fully equipped veterinary hospital, complete with cancer and dermatology clinics, a 24-hour emergency centre and an equine centre with operating theatres specially designed for horses.

Assignments and studyingYou are responsible for how much and what you study and will need to learn to manage and prioritise your work. Your assignments will encourage you to think critically and learn independently. You’ll also need to keep up to date with your readings and prepare for your classes, without anyone prompting you.

AttendanceAs a uni student, you’ll be free to come and go to campus as you please. Attendance is generally not taken in lectures but is usually taken in tutorials.

Class sizesYou’ll attend lectures and tutorials. Lectures are normally held in a lecture theatre, with one lecturer and a large number of students (especially in your first year). Tutorials are normally held in a classroom, with one tutor and a smaller group of students. In a lecture, you’ll listen and take notes, while in a tutorial you’ll explore and discuss lecture topics further.

SupportAs there are many more students at university than at high school, you may need to email or organise a time to meet with your lecturer or tutor if you need a little more help. At Murdoch, our lecturers and tutors are very supportive, and are happy to help students with their questions.

If you’re coming straight from high school, you may be wondering how different university is from what you already know. The main difference is that, at uni, you will be treated as an adult. You’ll be responsible for managing your own schedule, from attending classes to studying independently and getting assignments in on time.

Contact hoursYour contact hours will be fewer than what you experienced at high school. However, the hours you dedicate to independent study will be greater, as you’re expected to do more work in your own time. At the start of each semester, you’ll enrol in your units and create your timetable, so you can arrange your schedule to suit you.

If you want to be at the centre of all the action, then the Murdoch University Village is the place to be. Located on campus, your classes are right on your doorstep. The Village has stylish, fully furnished apartments available for rent, with options to suit almost any budget.

With the student experience a core focus, the Village has an exciting residential life program designed to help you meet new people, achieve academically and develop essential life skills.

The Village offers 24-hour staff presence, with resident staff members living onsite and night-time security patrols.

Rates

The rates for 2019 range from $153.50 weekly for a twin-share bedroom to $400.50 weekly for a one-bedroom apartment per semester.

If you book your accommodation for the entire university year (42 weeks), rather than just one semester at a time, the rates will be cheaper.

Short-stay accommodationIf you’re thinking about trialling living out of home, or are looking for a temporary base before you find long-term housing, Murdoch Village is now offering short-term stays.

Short-stay accommodation in five-bed share apartments can be booked on a nightly basis, with rates starting from just $60 per night. Further discounts are available for 3+ or 7+ night stays.

As a Murdoch student, you can choose to take part in our Exchange program, go abroad on a discipline-led study tour, or undertake an internship or summer or winter program through the providers we work with.

Our programs are all taught in English, so there’s no need to learn a second language (but you can if you want to)!

Exchange programIn our Exchange program, you can have the experience of a lifetime by taking your studies overseas for a semester or two. You’ll be able to study units that aren’t available at Murdoch, while still earning credit towards your degree.

“The journalism course I was studying was particularly exciting because we had to travel and report from different countries for some of our assignments.

I think all up, spending a whole year away was really worthwhile, it gave me plenty of time to form close friendships and see all the things I wanted to see. Studying abroad in Europe has the advantage of being such a short, cheap flight away from so many countries. It was so exciting getting to explore new places! Travel bug? Discipline-led study tourThrough a discipline-led study tour, you can travel and learn with groups of students from your study area. Veterinary Science students can experience placements in New Zealand and South Africa, while Nursing students can complete clinical and practical placements in Africa, Asia or the United Kingdom. Education students can teach at international schools in Singapore, Thailand or China, and Law students can travel to Switzerland to take part in an international human rights program.

Your first year Your first year at uni will probably be one full of questions, so we do everything we can to make sure you’re prepared for your studies.

In the week before your classes start, you’ll attend an orientation week, so you can be introduced to all things Murdoch. You can attend course advice sessions, meet your lecturers, sign up for clubs and activities, get your student card, go on campus tours, make friends and really immerse yourself in uni life.

MyMurdoch ADVICEAsking for advice is part of uni life and key to being a successful student. At myMurdoch Advice, we’ll help you get the most out of your university experience and give you valuable guidance for your studies and wellbeing.

Academic supportAs a Murdoch student, you’ll have exclusive access to free academic skills workshops that focus on various learning skills, such as essay writing, editing, referencing, time management and so much more. You’ll also have access to a wide range of online academic support resources, including Studiosity, where you can get feedback on English writing for draft essays and reports, and live online assistance from subject specialists.

If you need help with a specific unit, you could join our Peer Assisted Study Sessions (PASS), which are group study sessions led by trained students who have successfully completed the unit.

Careers and Employment teamOur friendly Careers and Employment team is here to help you with all your career-related queries. They can help you find internship and vacation opportunities, and they also run and promote career events, mentoring programs and workshops that can help increase your employability.

Child careWe have a childcare centre and kindergarten at our Perth campus, to help students balance family and study commitments.

The cost of your degreeAll undergraduate degrees at Murdoch University are Commonwealth supported. This means that for eligible students, the Australian Government will subsidise your degree by paying part of the fees. You are required to pay the remainder of the fees (known as a student contribution), either by paying upfront to the University or by paying your fees later, through a HECS-HELP loan.

Each course will vary in cost, depending on the units you study. To find out the cost for your course, visit murdoch.edu.au/ugfees

HECS-HELP loanThe Australian Government offers a HECS-HELP loan scheme, which allows you to defer paying your university fees until you are earning above a certain amount.

To be eligible for a HECS-HELP loan, you must:

• be studying in a Commonwealth-supported place

• be an Australian citizen, a New Zealand Special Category Visa holder who meets the HELP residency requirements, or a permanent humanitarian visa holder

• be enrolled in each unit at your university by the census date

• meet the relevant HECS-HELP residency requirements

• read the Commonwealth supported places and HECS-HELP information booklet

• submit a valid Request for a Commonwealth supported place and a HECS-HELP loan form by the census date (or earlier administrative date) to your university

ParkingOur Perth campus has three parking zones, and permits range from $200* to $480* per year. Parking at the Rockingham and Mandurah campuses is free for students, although you’ll need to get a permit.

BooksYou can buy new books from our on-campus bookshop or second-hand books through the Student Guild. The Library also holds textbooks in closed reserve and has a wide variety of resources available online.

The Student Services and Amenities FeeThis compulsory fee is used to support a range of activities and services across the Murdoch campuses, and will vary depending on your student type.

Are you a high achiever?At Murdoch, we reward hard work and commitment to learning. As a high academic achiever, you may be eligible for a number of scholarships worth up to $20,000 for choosing to study at Murdoch University.

Are you moving from a regional or remote location?Moving to the city from a regional or remote location is a big life change. To help you make the move, you could be eligible for a number of scholarships worth up to $24,000.

Are you experiencing personal or financial hardship?We know that starting university brings new experiences, as well as new expenses. But don’t let that stop you from reaching your goals. Murdoch may be able to assist you with a number of scholarships worth up to $12,000.

Have you completed a course at TAFE WA?We reward commencing students who have completed a Diploma, Advanced Diploma or Associate Degree at one of TAFE WA’s institutions and are continuing their studies in the same field at Murdoch with a scholarship worth up to $3,000.

Our entry requirements for those who completed secondary education are a WA Certificate of Education, a pass in an ATAR English subject and a selection rank of at least 70, with some courses requiring a higher selection rank. But if you didn’t achieve a pass in English or a selection rank high enough for your course, or you didn’t study an ATAR pathway at all, don’t worry − there are still ways to study at Murdoch.

Entry requirements All undergraduate courses have an essential minimum English proficiency requirement.* You can demonstrate English proficiency by:

• achieving a scaled mark of 50 or higher in ATAR English, Literature or English as an Additional Language or Dialect (EALD)

• sitting an English proficiency test, such as the Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT). TISC may invite you to sit the written component of the STAT if you are under 20 years of age and needing to demonstrate English Language Competency

• successfully completing a university preparation course, English language course (academic) or study at tertiary level.

Selection rank pathway With the exception of Nursing and Veterinary Science, undergraduate courses at Murdoch have an admission pathway based on a minimum selection rank required for consideration. Your selection rank will include your ATAR plus any eligible Murdoch RISE selection rank adjustments.

Selection rank adjustments − Murdoch RISE Murdoch RISE is a selection rank adjustment aimed at supporting access to university for students from regional, low socio-economic, or Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander backgrounds.

It can help you get into your preferred course by increasing your Murdoch selection rank by 10 points, up to a maximum of 90.

To be eligible for Murdoch RISE, you must have completed secondary education in Western Australia with an ATAR between 60 and 89.95 inclusive, and you must have achieved a scaled score of 50+ in ATAR English.

You must also satisfy one of the following conditions:

• Achieved your ATAR at a high school on our RISE list: murdoch.edu.au/RISEschools

• Have a permanent home address when completing Year 12 at a postcode on our RISE postcodes list: murdoch.edu.au/RISEPostcodes

• Have indicated Aboriginal or Torres Strait Island descent by declaring status through your TISC application or on the Indigenous indicator when applying directly.

There’s no need to register for Murdoch RISE. If you’re eligible, the adjustment factor is automatically added to your raw ATAR score when you apply.

We offer a range of pathways to study an undergraduate degree at Murdoch. We consider your high school results, other previous studies, and your work and life experience.

Creative Portfolio Our Creative Portfolio entry allows you to submit a portfolio of work to gain entry into a number of Bachelor of Arts, Creative Media and Communication majors, including English and Creative Writing, Games Art and Design, Graphic Design, Journalism, Photography, Screen Production, Sound, Strategic Communication, and Theatre and Drama.

To be eligible for this admission option, you'll also need to have achieved a scaled score of 50+ in ATAR English, or have successfully completed the written component of the STAT with a score of 140 or higher.

Law Start If you have excelled at school in one or more ATAR subject, with a strong focus on essay writing and communication skills, you could apply for the Bachelor of Laws by using this pathway. You will need to demonstrate your aptitude to study Law by participating in a workshop and completing a written assessment.

Extenuating circumstances We understand that your pathway to university may not be a smooth one. If your education has been compromised by genuine hardship, which has meant you’ve missed out on qualifying for an undergraduate course, we’ll take your circumstances into account.

International Baccalaureate (IB) To qualify for your chosen degree, you will need to achieve English Language Competency and the minimum IB score required for your course. At Murdoch, most courses require an IB English score of 3 or more in Higher Level or 4 or more in Standard Level. The minimum IB score for a majority of courses is 24. However, a score of 27 is required for Engineering and 33 for Law. Veterinary Science does not have a guaranteed IB score for entry as there are limited places available. The minimum IB score that would be considered for Veterinary Science is 38.

Interstate study If you have completed secondary education outside of Western Australia, you still need to meet the same entry requirements as Western Australian students. ATARs are equivalent from every state except Queensland. Applicants from Queensland can have their Overall Position (OP) converted to an ATAR.

Applicants with work and life experienceHave you not completed secondary education, or completed it more than two years ago and have not completed a vocational education and training (VET) qualification or higher education?

Finished secondary education more than two years ago Even if it has been a while since you finished Year 12, your exam results are valid indefinitely. Scores obtained since 1992 can be converted to an ATAR using the TISC ATAR calculator at tisc.edu.au

Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT) If you’re at least 20 years old by the 1st of March in the year you wish to commence your study, you can apply for entry to Murdoch by sitting the STAT. This excludes direct entry into Law or Veterinary Science.

To apply for admission into most of our undergraduate courses, you’ll need a STAT score of at least 140 in the written English section and 135 in the multiple choice section.

Mature Age Pathway (MAP) If you’re passionate about a field of study and feel you have relevant work and life experience, then the Murdoch MAP is for you. This pathway involves an interview and an assessment of your work and life experience, and will qualify you to study most Murdoch courses with a selection rank of 70.

Applicants with vocational education and training (VET) studyHave you completed a vocational education and training course?

For many of our undergraduate courses, if you have successfully completed a Certificate IV or higher VET qualification and can demonstrate English competency, you’re eligible to apply for admission. This excludes direct entry into Law and Veterinary Science. For entry into Engineering, your VET qualification must be at diploma level or higher.

OnTrackA 14-week course offered at our Perth, Mandurah and Rockingham campuses, for students who do not qualify for direct entry.

OnTrack Sprint A four-week course offered at our Perth campus for students who received:

Murdoch University Preparation Course A foundation-level course combining the essentials of Years 11 and 12, studied through Murdoch Institute of Technology.

Pre-Law A night course designed for mature age applicants who do not meet the entry requirements for our Bachelor of Laws. If you complete this course at credit level (at least a 60% average), you’ll be offered direct entry into the Bachelor of Laws.

TLC110 Learning for TomorrowA free course, offered at our Mandurah and Rockingham campuses, where Year 12 students attend one class a week from February to September while completing their Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE). Students need to pass this course, achieve a scaled score of 50+ in ATAR English or a grade of ‘C’ or better in General English, and achieve their WACE.

University terms explainedMajor: An extended sequence of units in a specialised area of study that is recognised on your University degree certificate.

Course core: A set of required units and specified electives that form part or all of the completion requirements in some degrees.

Options: Once you’ve completed the compulsory parts of your degree and major, you may have left over credit points, meaning you can study options. Choices might include taking:

• an additional major: sometimes called a double or second major, an additional major is another major that you study alongside your first chosen major − depending on what you choose, this may or may not increase the time required to complete your course

• a co-major: a sequence of units in a specialised area of study that has less depth than a major

• a minor: a short sequence of units in a particular area of study that has less depth than a co-major

• general electives: any units from across the University for which you meet the prerequisites.

Murdoch Career Spine: a unique career-enhancing group of units or experiences designed to give you the skills and attributes employers are looking for and the tools to plan for, and manage, your career.

You’ll learn to work in a digital environment and to network like a professional, and you’ll develop the skills needed to manage your professional identity online. Depending on your degree, you may also get 40 hours of practical learning experience to really kick-start your career.

Step 2. Choose your degree and major We have more than 80 undergraduate majors on offer across a wide range of degrees, so you can choose a course best suited to your interests and goals.

If you study the Bachelor of Engineering, Creative Media, Communication, Business or Commerce, you won’t need to lock in your major until the end of your first or second semester. Instead, you can start your degree and explore the areas you like most, before you choose your area of specialisation.

Step 3. Discover your combined degree and double major options In this rapidly changing world, it’s important to have a diverse skill set across a number of disciplines. For most courses at Murdoch, you can study two majors or degrees at once, saving you time and money. Specialising in two areas will expand your expertise, broaden your career options and give you a competitive edge in your career.

Double majorsA double major, also known as an additional major, is where you study two majors concurrently. In most cases, if you study two majors from the same degree, you can still complete your degree in the specified time frame. For example, you can complete a Bachelor of Commerce in Marketing with Management in three years full-time.

Combined degreesA combined degree allows you to study and complete two different degrees at the same time, which usually takes a year or two longer than a single degree.

This course is unique in WA, as it focuses on biology and life sciences forensics as well as crime scene investigation and chemistry.

Learn about forensic palynology (the use of pollen grains to connect a suspect to a crime scene), forensic anthropology (the identification of skeletal remains) and forensic entomology (the insects that decompose human remains), how to recognise blunt and sharp force injuries and the weapons that cause them. Study the pathology of asphyxiation, electrocution, gunshot wounds and the injuries associated with fatal fires; be exposed to the techniques used for disaster victim identification; and learn how to estimate time of death.

Do you want to inspire young people to live healthy, active lives?

In this course, you’ll graduate ready to work as a primary classroom teacher for Years 1 to 6 and also as a secondary teacher specialising in Health and Physical Education up to Year 10.

You’ll study areas of the primary curriculum including English, Mathematics, Science, Humanities and Social Sciences, Health and Physical Education and the Arts.

Throughout your degree, you’ll gain qualifications in coaching and officiating, with the opportunity to work with specialist coaches from a variety of sporting bodies such as the Western Australian Cricket Association (WACA), Tennis Australia, Basketball WA and Hockey WA.

You’ll design, deliver and lead a sport development program for juniors, either within a school or club, and receive coaching accreditation in selected sports.

Applying for two majors?

To apply for an additional major, simply apply for one of your chosen majors, and then after you accept your Murdoch offer, you can add your second major when you enrol in your units.
