Getting Better Together Foundation board member Dewey Carl has received the 2011 Outstanding Philanthropist Award from the Northeast Wisconsin chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals. The award, given in conjunction with National Philanthropy Day, recognizes Carl’s efforts to improve quality of life through dedication to philanthropy. “Dewey Carl is the model of generous citizenship. He’s involved in multiple organizations, and his leadership and passion have led to meaningful improvements throughout the region,” says Foundation executive director Deborah Johnson. Carl has been a visionary leader on the Foundation board since 2006. Most recently, he stepped forth with the lead gift for the Foundation’s 2010 capital campaign in support of a new chemotherapy suite at New London Family Medical Center (NLFMC). His gift set the bar for the board and the community, and the campaign raised some $280,000. The chemotherapy facility, now complete, is named for Carl’s late wife, Beverly. Carl’s philanthropic efforts extend beyond the Foundation. He is a longtime Lions Club of Wisconsin member. He served as president of the Wisconsin Lions Foundation for six years and currently chairs the $25 million Lions Pride Campaign. He also was a Manawa city council member for 12 years and chairs the Wolf River Trail Committee. “Dewey Carl gives generously of all his resources — time, talent and treasure,” says Foundation board president Harry Radix. “He makes a real difference in his community and inspires others to do the same.” Pam Gretzinger, Clintonville Why WRAHF? Getting Better Together

Foundation board member Dewey Carl has received the 2011 Outstanding Philanthropist Award from the Northeast Wisconsin chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals.

“He makes a real difference in his community and inspires others to do the same.”

Pam Gretzinger, ClintonvilleWhy WRAHF? Clintonville lost a rural hospital some years ago, and I found that scary. We need to meet our hospital’s needs to make patients more comfortable and to provide treatment close to home.

Other community connections? My husband and I own Gretzinger Sales & Service, between Clintonville and Marion. SAVE APRIL 28, 2012, for the next Sturgeon Shuffle!

Your Involvement Improves Kids’ HealthYou came. You shuffled. And you supported healthcare in your community.

The Foundation’s inaugural Sturgeon Shuffle run/walk, held April 30, 2011, at New London Middle School, was a great success thanks to more than 200 participants and nearly 20 local sponsors. Now $5,000 in event proceeds — funds that you helped raise — are making possible three local outreach programs focused on improving kids’ health.

Safe Sitter This nationally recognized babysitter training program for children ages 11 to 13 was offered at New London Family Medical Center in the past, but a lack of funding led to its discontinuation.

Now Safe Sitter has been reinstated with a $1,700 grant from the Foundation. NLFMC and area middle schools are collaborating to offer the first session in the spring. Potential students should stay tuned for further details.

You Grow Girl! This free after-school program for girls in grades 5 through 8 helps young women learn healthy habits that transform how they perceive themselves and their place in society.

You Grow Girl! received a $1,500 grant to offer this internationally recognized program at Clintonville Middle School during the 2011-12 school year. Some 20 girls will participate per semester.

Bike Safety Rodeo This free program developed by ThedaCare teaches children ages 6 to 12 the rules of the road through skills training stations. Each child attending the event receives a free, expertly fitted bike helmet.

A $1,800 grant from the Foundation will make this program available in New London for the first time ever. ThedaCare will donate 250 helmets for the initial rodeo, presented by the Foundation, ThedaCare, ThedaCare Physicians-New London, NLFMC, the New London Police Department and DeCA Club at New London High School.

Dr. Kerry Griebenow, New LondonWhy WRAHF? A viable, high-quality healthcare system is so important to a small community. We have an excellent facility here in New London, and the Foundation is key in making sure we maintain it.

Other community connections? I own Griebenow Eyecare, in New London since 1979 and in Clintonville since 2009. I’ve also been involved with the Lions Club, New London Rotary, and Wisconsin Optometric Association.Hobbies? I enjoy time with my wife, Marian, and dog, Bella, plus travel, photography, golf, fishing, hunting, cooking, and getting away to our northwoods cottage.

Rev. Greg Watling, New LondonWhy WRAHF? I want to be a part of making high-quality healthcare accessible to our community. I don’t know that I’ve ever worked with as dedicated a group of peopleas those on this board.

Other community connections? I’m pastor at united Church of Christ in New London. I’m also on the New London Soccer Association board and work with the New London Band Boosters.Hobbies? I like bicycling, boating, camping and downhill skiing. I also enjoy spending time with my family doing just about anything!

Thanks to the more than 220 people who attended the Foundation’s Sept. 20 annual dinner, An evening with the Stars, NLFMC patients and staff will see several benefits:

Did you know that through Dec. 31, 2011, you can execute a tax-free charitable rollover

from your iRA to the Foundation? This special opportunity is thanks to the Tax Relief,

unemployment insurance Reauthorization, and Job Creation Act of 2010.

Who qualifies?individuals 70 ½ or older at the time of the contributionHow much can I transfer?Any amount up to $100,000 per individual in 2011Does this transfer qualify as my minimum required distribution? Yes. Once you reach age 70 ½ you are required to take a minimum distribution from your retirement plans each year. iRA charitable rollovers satisfy this requirement. What are the tax implications to me?You do not recognize the transfer to the WRAHF as income, provided it goes directly from the iRA provider to us, and no charitable deduction is taken on your income taxes. How do I execute an IRA charitable rollover?Contact Deborah Johnson at (920) 531-2221 or [email protected]. You may also speak with your iRA plan provider.

Olivia Bessette, a 2011 graduate of Little Wolf River

High School, wrote to thank the NLFMC medical staff

for the scholarship she received through the Foundation,

saying, “I hope someday I will be able to open a doctor’s

office in a small community, and this scholarship will

bring me a little bit closer to achieving that goal.”

On behalf of the Bear Creek Lions Club, Ardys Fietzer presents to Foundation executive director Deborah Johnson the club’s first-ever donation to the Foundation.
