Soldier Sends Thank You

Global Campus has received the following note of thanks from a soldier that received one of our holiday cards we sent:

"As a soldier in Comanche Troop, I would like to thank you for the kind gesture to send Christmas cards while we are deployed to Hungary during the holidays. It is a pleasure and honor to serve you that show support of military while we are away from our families. Happy New Year.”

Tina and Melinda are working on doing something like this again in the future. Watch for details.

Alexa Keim GetConnected

Office: Academic and Professional Programs, Student assistant Time at Global Campus: 3.5 years Hometown: Sabetha, Kansas Alexa’s Family: I come from a family of six (Mom, dad and three younger siblings) and am now married to my husband, Nolan.

What is your favorite food to eat for breakfast? I have an obsession with oatmeal. Overnight, cooked, steel-cut, or quick, I love it any way you cut it. Putting a scoop of peanut butter and drizzling some honey over the top is my go-to, but my sister and I have experimented with all the flavors – chocolate espresso, apple pie, cinnamon-raisin-almond, etc. This may have stemmed from my childhood when my grandma would put a scoop of ice cream in our oatmeal.

What place would you like to visit? I would love to go to Germany and Switzerland. On my study tour this last summer, I was able to spend a day between the two, but it wasn’t enough! And I didn’t really get to see any of Germany. Most of my family from both sides are from there and I think it would be so fun to see where they came from. I have also had a deep desire for years to visit the Holocaust museums/memorials. I think it would break my heart, but to experience that would be absolutely amazing.

What was the last movie that you saw in theaters and what did you think of it? Okay, this wasn’t in theaters, but I wanted to answer so badly. I just watched LION on Netflix. Holy cow, everybody needs to watch it. It is an incredible true story about this 5-year-old boy in India who gets lost on a train and can’t find his way back home. After a while on the streets, he is adopted by a family in Australia. Anyway, 20 years later, he goes on this mission to figure out where he was from and find his birth mother.

What was your first car? When I was a freshman in high school, my dad bought a 2005 grey Taurus. We thought it was pretty great (since we grew up on a farm and desperately wanted a mode of transportation into town). However, by my senior year, it started making some bizarre squealing noises. Everybody at school could literally hear us pulling in. My sister still drives that car here in Manhattan; she wants to buy a new one, but college, man.

What would you do if you had a snow day? I HATE the cold (and I hate the hot, so Kansas is a weird place for me to be). It’s so cliché, but card games, Christmas Hallmark movies, and some hot coffee/steamer/tea is my perfect snow day. Can you believe I set up my Christmas tree before Thanksgiving?

Jackie Doebele

Office: Administration and Finance, Accountant I Time at Global Campus: Six months Hometown: Hanover, Kansas

How do you relieve stress? Walk.

If you could have a ticket to any concert, what would it be and why? Even though she has passed away, I really enjoy listening to Whitney Houston’s voice.

If you could have a vacation home, where would it be? Switzerland

What would be the first thing you would buy if you won the lottery? A body guard.

Who are the people you honor or remember on Memorial Day? My parents

Joshua Arnoldy

Office: Conferences and Noncredit Programs, Student Assistant Time at Global Campus: four months Hometown: Downs, Kansas Joshua’s Family: I grew up with both parents and one older sister.

What foreign language(s) do you want to learn? I would really like to learn ASL (American Sign Language).

What movie are you looking forward to seeing in theaters? Incredibles 2

What was your first car? I had a Blue and White 1995 Ford F-150 named Tigger.

What was your most memorable Halloween costume? I went as Harry Potter one year. My mom made a cape that was see through from the inside but not the outside, and I thought it was the coolest thing ever.

What is your favorite season and why? I really enjoy summer. The warmer weather is my forte and I used to spend the summers lifeguarding which is a really fun job

GetConnected Julie Hunt

Office: Academic and Professional Programs, Program Coordinator Time at Global Campus: nine months Hometown: I am originally from Warren, Ohio. Julie’s Family: Paul and I have been married for 37 years. We have three daughters; Martha, Mary, Rachel and two dogs; Sally and Gracie.

Do you have any pets? We have two dogs, Sally is a busy Boston Terrier and Gracie is a sweet Corgie Lab mix. They keep Paul and me busy with daily walks and bone throwing activities. They are both lap dogs (even the 45-pound one).

What are some hobbies you have? I play trombone in the Thundering Cats Big Band, the Manhattan City band and a low brass group at my church. I also love to walk and read.

What do you enjoy most about your job? I love the people here at Global Campus. Everyone has been so supportive and kind, and I truly appreciate the family atmosphere.

What is something you look forward to at the beginning of the day? My husband and I wake up at 6am to walk our dogs. It is dark and quiet and the stars are beautiful in the morning. Once we get back to the house, we eat breakfast, drink tea/coffee and play “Best Fiends” on our iPads while listening to a book on tape or a Podcast. I look forward to this morning ritual.

What is your most memorable summer vacation? On our 25th anniversary, Paul, my daughters and I visited Glacier National Park. One day we packed peanut butter sandwiches and had lunch on the top of a mountain that overlooked a lake. We sat there for a long time listening to the breeze and watching the shadows crawl across the lake. I like to recall that moment when I feel stressed.

What makes you smile and why? People make me smile. I enjoy meeting new people and finding ways to connect to them.

What would you do if you had a snow day? I love snow days. When my children were home, we would make a pot of soup, snuggle on the couch and watch movies. Now that my daughters are gone, I snuggle with my dogs and Paul, of course.

Student Staff Took Course, Trip to India

Gabryelle Gilliam, student assistant for Trina McCarty and Janel Koons in APP, took the course AGEC 460, which included a trip to India, Jan. 3-14, 2018. Andrew & Mary Ellen Barkley and Cherie Hodgson were the group sponsors.

The official description of the course was: AGEC 460, International Food and Agribusiness Study Tour of India. An 11-day intensive Agricultural Economics study tour that will introduce students to the agriculture industry in India, including livestock and crop production and management practices, food markets, agribusinesses, government operations, as well as other historical and cultural educational opportunities. The culture and history of the country will also be studied. The course will include preparatory class meetings during the fall semester to acquaint students with the language, commodities, government, and geography of the county and locations that will be visited.

We will visit both Old and New Delhi, the Capital city of India, the US Embassy and Foreign Agriculture Service, Cargill corporate office near Delhi, the Indian Agricultural Research Institute, Surjivan Organic Farm, the Taj Mahal in Agra, Agra Fort and Fatehpur Sikri Palaces in Jaipur, Amber Fort and Hawa Majal in Jaipur, the Milk Collection Center, the major trading hub of Ludhiana, Punjab Agriculture University, a Water Buffalo farm (India is the largest exporter of beef in the world!), Beauscape Farms, growers and exporters of vegetables and flower seeds, and a textile unit. We will also see the National Dairy Research Institute at Karnal, the premier dairying re-search complex in India. At the end of the study tour, we will visit a Rice Mill, and the largest wholesale fruit and vegetable market in Asia, and a spice

market. We will also include a visit a K-State Feed the Future wheat project at Punjab Agricultural University.

Summary: So many people have asked me what the trip was like and I’m at a loss of words trying to explain everything that I saw. When I think of my time in India, a few words come to mind: history, people, and agriculture. I will truly treasure these memories for the rest of my life and will continue to find ways to experience new countries and cultures. For more details on the trip and her experience you can visit with Gabryelle in room 226.
