SELEX ES EXPERTISE

Baggage security and sorting are some of the mostimportant priorities of airport operators. The effectivenessof this service is essential to an airport, since it mustgrant that luggage are returned to passengers as theyarrive. The Net 6000 system - one of the largest TransitBaggage Handling System in Europe - represents theculmination of an innovation process that has drawn onSelex ES’s experience in automation, security and ICT.

Covering about 7,000 sqm in Rome’s Fiumicino airport,Net 6000 can handle up to 6,000 bags per hour whileusing 30% energy less than comparable market solutions.The solution is based on the MBHS – MultisortingBagagge Handling System the innovative “cross-belt”sorter able to handle different size and surface objects,enabling Aeroporti di Roma to drastically reduce baggagemishandling.

Based on the same transport system made up of acontinuous train of cells moving around a closed loop, theMTTS – Multisorting Tilt-Tray System is the tilt- tray sorterwhose main innovation lies in the patented tiltingactivation system, that applies the Direct Drive Motion

Technology. The great controllability and high accelerationgranted by linear motors reduces unloading time andimproves unloading trajectory precision, making it possibleto increase operating speed and reduce the spaceallocated for outlets.

Furthermore, Selex ES product portfolio in baggagehandling presents efficient ranging from check-in stationsto baggage reclaim carousels.

Selex ES is able to provide turnkey telecommunicationsolutions, from design to installation and maintenanceservices for road, railway and mass transit environmentsas well as for Air and Maritime communication needs,such as GSM-R, fibre optic, SDH transport networks, VoIP,Wi-Fi and WiMAX, as well as TETRA-based and satellite-based communication systems, used for voice, data andvideo and is actively working on the application of wide-band and broadband evolutions of these networks to thetransportation sector.

The general definition Air Traffic Control (ATC) comprisesthe set of regulations and bodies that contribute to makesafe and effective aircraft traffic, both on the ground andin flight all over the world, preventing collisions, speedingup and keeping regular air traffic, providing information fora safe and effective flight conduct and, when necessary,warning research and rescue bodies. Selex ES furthermoreplays an active role within several European and globalprograms, such as SESAR (Single European Sky ATMResearch), in which the company works on more than 10

projects concerning the study of future technologies withinthe air traffic management (ATM) sphere.

Selex ES is a leader in the supply of turnkey systems forvoice and data communications between pilot andcontroller. Thanks to the development of its thirdgeneration of Radio Base Stations, Selex ES can provideits customers, such as the Italian ENAV, Chinese CAACand Indian AAI, with a multi-mode communication system,able to communicate using various voice and data modessimultaneously allowing increased operationseffectiveness and leading to a cut in operational costs, incompliance with ICAO and EUROCONTROL regulations.

Relying on the consolidated experience in security, bothlogical and physical, as the security competence centre inFinmeccanica Group, Selex ES offers integrated securitysystems and operation control rooms for joint forcesoperations. It also supports and maintains solutions formajor events protection for the full lifecycle of the eventitself. This was, for instance, the case for the G8 summitheld in L’Aquila in 2009, which synthesizes Selex ES’scapabilities through the delivery of a complete videosurveillance system to monitor the airport operations,baggage inspections included; the full management of ICTinfrastructure comprising the content delivery network forthe dynamic distribution and management of professionalcontents, the networking infrastructure for the secureradio communication throughout the entire interestedarea, as well as the realization of the event web portal.
