Welcome to Argyll and Bute When it comes to life’s momentous occasions – getting married, reaffirming your wedding vows, naming ababy – choosing where to hold the ceremony plays a signifcant part.

If you are thinking about a civil wedding or other ceremony in Argyll and Bute you can rest assured that youwill find the ideal location for your special day. Whether you dream of a winter wedding in a romantic oldcastle, a marriage made in heaven against a backdrop of stunning mountains and coastline, or standinghand-in-hand, barefoot on a sunny sandy beach, Argyll and Bute can offer it all.

Situated on the Scottish west coast, Argyll and Bute is one of the most stunning and diverse areas in thecountry. We have 3,000 miles of coastline, six main towns and 25 inhabited islands – and no matter whereyou go, you will receive the warmest of welcomes.

The Argyll and Bute Council area is divided into four distinct areas – Bute and Cowal; Helensburgh andLomond; Mid Argyll, Kintyre and the Islands; and Oban, Lorn and the Isles. Each area has its own uniquecharacter and culture and all offer a wealth of beautiful locations and venues for your perfect day – whetheryou want something a little different in the great outdoors or are looking for a traditional ceremony in oneof our lovely civic buildings. You can find out more about these places later in the guide, to help you findexactly the right place to celebrate your special day in Argyll and Bute.

When it comes to weddings, it is important to distinguish between civil and religious marriages in Scotland.A religious service will be conducted by a minister, clergyman, priest, faith groups or any other personentitled to undertake this under the Marriage (Scotland) Acts. Alternatively, a civil ceremony can beconducted by an authorised registrar or assistant registrar who has been specifically appointed by theRegistrar General. Whether you are having a religious or a civil ceremony you will need to contact registrarsto complete the necessary paperwork.

This guide concentrates specifically on civil ceremonies and not religious ceremonies. In it, you will finduseful information about the legal requirements you must fulfil before you can get married in Scotland,contact details for all our registration offices and registrars and a useful frequently asked questions section.Some parts of the book are in Gaelic, to reflect our commitment to the promotion of the Gaelic language.

Your big day in Argyll and Bute - getting started

After the excitement of deciding to get married, there’s a lot to do andthink about. Our guide will help you get started.

Where will you get married?The most important decision is where you want to get married. You canhave your wedding at any registration office or venue of your choice – forexample, a private garden, a local landmark or a hotel. Our registrars canhelp you choose a suitable venue. Registration staff will visit your chosenvenue and, following satisfactory inspection, approve your choice.

What forms do you need to fill in?For both civil and religious marriages, both the bride and the groom must complete marriage notice forms.You can get these from any registrar’s office in Scotland or download them from www.argyll-bute.gov.uk orthe National Records of Scotland (NRS) website (www.nrs-scotland.gov.uk).

These can be submitted to the registrar in the district where you are getting married (along with supportingdocuments and a fee) at least 28 clear days before the proposed date of marriage. However, we prefer if youallow six to eight weeks. If you are not a British citizen you may have to obtain further documentation. NonEEA citizens who are subject to immigration control will not require entry clearance for the purpose of givingnotice. However, it will be required for immigration purposes. Contact the UK Border Agency ImmigrationEnquiry Bureau on 0870 606 7766 or visit www.ukvisas.gov.uk to find out about entry requirments for the UKunder immigration rules.

The marriage scheduleThe marriage schedule is a very important document – it is authority for the marriage to go ahead andno marriage can proceed without it. It is issued when the registrar is satisfied that there is no legalimpediment to getting married, You will sign the marriage schedule at your civil marriage ceremony.

What charges must be paid?A list of current statutory regeistration fees is available from any registrar’s office. This is subject to change,so it is best to check in advance, but there is some information on Argyll and Bute Council’s website,www.argyll -bute.gov.uk

Reaffirmation ceremoniesIf you are already married but would like to renew yourmarriage vows, our registrars offer a reaffirmationceremony – a unique and personal way to celebrateyour original wedding vows.

Although these ceremonies are often associated with a special anniversary, they can be performed at any time in your marriage. They have no legalimplication but are a public statement of yourcontinued commitment to each other.

Reaffirmation ceremonies can take place in one of ourregistration offices or at a venue of your choice. At theend of the ceremony you can be presented with a cerificate to mark the occassion. Ask any of ourregistrars about prices, which depend on the venue,the day of the week and the time of your ceremony.

Services in GaelicFluent Gaelic speakers can ask their local registrar about having their ceremony conducted in Gaelic.

GuestsWe recommend that your guests arrive 15 minutes before the ceremony is due to start.

Bride and groomThe bride and groom, if entering together, should arrive approximately ten minutes before the start of theceremony – otherwise, the groom should arrive 15 minutes beforehand. The bride and groom may entertogether or the bride may wish to be given away.

Please note that we cannot allocate time for the bride to be traditionally late, as we have to considerarrangements for other marriage parties.

ParkingWe make every effort to secure a parking space for the bridal car, although parking cannot be guaranteedand some offices may not be able to provide this facility.

FlowersSilk flowers are displayed in our ceremony rooms but if you would prefer to arrange for fresh flowers, ourregistrars will be happy to discuss this with you when finalising your arrangements.

MusicA limited choice of music is available but please feel free to discuss playing your own special pieces of musicwith the registrar.

PoetryIt is possible to have a short piece of poetry read at your ceremony – please ask your registrar.

Your ceremony will include the legal requirements but you can add your own personal touches –your registrar will be happy to discuss this with you.

Do we have to have wedding rings?Your registrar will check beforehand about whether you willbe exchanging one or two rings. If you choose not to haverings, be assured that this does not affect the validity ofyour marriage at all.

How can we make our ceremony special?Talk to your registrar about any enhancements you wouldlike, such as readings or poetry – your registrar should seethem before the day.

What time/days of the week do you conduct ceremonies?Normally ceremonies are carried out Monday to Saturday during times set by the local registrar. If you havespecial requirements, please discuss these with your registrar who will look at the options.

How many guests are able to attend at the ceremony room?Your local registrar will be happy to advise you about the accommodationavailable at your chosen venue.

How much does a civil ceremony cost?Fees can vary, depending on the type of ceremony and where and when ittakes place. Your registrar will provide you with up-to-date information oncurrent fees or you can visit www.argyll-bute.gov.uk.

Can you provide witnesses?You will need two witnesses, both aged over 16. Your registrar may be able to provide witnesses for you if your ceremony is due to take place Mondayto Friday; this will of course be discussed before your special day.

If we are getting marriedoutside, what happens if it’sraining on the day?

When you are booking yourceremony, your registrar willexplain that you must have a wetweather alternative in case ofinclement conditions.

Are there any residential qualifications to be married in Scotland and what documents do we needwhen we are submitting marriage notice forms?

Although there are no residential qualifications for getting married in Scotland, your registrar will explain allthe legal requirements for your wedding. You can also find these on form RM1 which is available from anyregistrar’s office in Scotland or download from www.argyll-bute.gov.uk or the National Registration Officewebsite at www.nrs-scotland.gov.uk

Can we have photographs taken and a filmrecording of our ceremony?

There are guidelines to ensure that photography or filming does not distract from the the dignityand solemnity of the ceremony. Your registrarwill advise you on this when you are makingarrangements. You will be asked if you wish yourphotograph taken for inclusion in our onlinewedding gallery.

Can we throw confetti?Confetti can be used, but only outside the building.Please remind your guests to dispose of emptyboxes carefully.

Dunoon and CowalCowal lies at the gateway to the Highlands and alsoprovides the marine gateway to Scotland’s first nationalpark, the Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park.

If you are travelling by road from Glasgow on the M8 youshould head to Gourock, where there are two ferryservices across the Clyde to Dunoon – one carriesvehicles and passengers, and the other is passenger only.This trip gives you a wonderful introduction to the Cowalpeninsula, including a different perspective on the townof Dunoon as you arrive by sea. The mountainssurrounding the sea lochs provide a spectacular backdropas the ferry docks at either Dunoon town centre orHunter’s Quay, just a few minutes outside the town.

Alternatively you can travel by road using the A82, whichtakes you along the ‘bonnie banks of Loch Lomond’ tojoin the A815 – itself well worth travelling with itsmagnificent scenery and views of beautiful Loch Eck. Fivemiles north of Dunoon on the A815 is the YoungerBotanic Garden at Benmore, best known for its avenue ofGiant Redwood trees which were planted in 1863 and arenow among the highest in Britain.

Dunoon/Dun OmhainDunoon is the second largest town inArgyll and Bute, and came toprominence in the 19th centurywhen paddle steamers offered easyaccess to visitors from Glasgow. Theworld’s last ocean-going paddlesteamer, the PS Waverley, stilloperates during the summer season.

The town is also home to the Cowal Highland Gathering, a world-renowned Highland games, heldannually in August and attractingvisitors and competitors from allover the world.

Castle House, Dunoon

The ceremony rooms in Dunoon are based on theground floor of Castle House, an imposing buildingin its own grounds and enjoying panoramic viewsover the Firth of Clyde. Built in the 1820s as aholiday home for Lord Provost Ewing of Glasgow, it was originally more modestly named Marine Villa before it was renamed Castle House,reflecting its splendour.

In later years it housed the Tulloch Library, acollection bequeathed by a local councillor, and isnow home to the Castle House Museum, a richstore of Victorian memorabilia.

Floral displays are provided in both rooms but if you preferto have fresh flowers, you can arrange this yourself – pleasediscuss this with your registrar.

Music can be provided, either from the selection held by theregistrar, or you can supply a CD of your own choice. Pleasemake sure your registrar has this at least two days beforethe ceremony.

The Castle House grounds are also home to a statue ofHighland Mary, looking towards Ayrshire where her truelove Robert Burns lived. The beautiful grounds are an ideallocation for outdoors civil ceremonies and there arenumerous spots particulary well suited to spectacularphotographs.

Castle House has disabled access and limited parkingavailable. However there is public parking withineasy walking distance.

Dunoon’s ceremony rooms include private waiting facilities for bridal parties and are furnished in keepingwith the character of the building.

The larger of the two ceremony rooms can accommodate the bridal party and 56 guests, while the smallerroom (the former Provost’s Room) accommodates the bridal party with a maximum of ten guests.

Bute/BhoidAt the heart of the Firth of the Clydelies the beautiful island of Bute,which has long welcomed visitors toits shores.

The island’s ceremony rooms are tobe in found in Eaglesham House,which is situated in Mount PleasantRoad overlooking Rothesay Bay.

The building is set on a hillside andstands alone by well-maintainedgrounds. These are also available foroutside ceremonies and are plantedwith mature trees – a pleasantbackground for photographs.

Eaglesham House has two ceremony rooms. The larger can accommodate the main party and a maximum of68 guests, while the smaller holds the main party with ten guests. Floral decorations are available in bothceremony rooms and there is also a CD player in the larger room.

There is ample car parking space within the grounds, and disabled access and toilets are available.

Helensburgh and Lomond

Helensburgh caters very well for its residents and visitors, with alarge variety of shops, restuarants, coffee shops, a swimmingpool, bowling greens, tennis courts and golf courses. There are anumber of centrally located hotels and guest houses. The wellmaintained grounds of Hermitage Park provide a beautifulbackdrop for wedding photographs.

The park is close to the town’s Victoria Halls, which opened in1887 in celebration of Queen Victoria’s golden anniversary. Thebuilding hosts many local events, concerts and displays and isbecoming a popular choice for couples wishing to hold theirwedding reception in its beautiful surroundings.

The town is served by regular trains to and from Glasgow as wellas rail links to Oban, Fort William and beyond.

Helensburgh/Baile EilidhFounded by Sir James Colquhoun and named after his wife, Lady Helen, this is Argyll and Bute’s largest town.Helensburgh is situated on the north shore of the River Clyde opposite Greenock and provides beautifulviews of the estuary and beyond. Many renowed architects, including Charles Rennie Mackintosh, Alexander‘Greek’ Thomson and Robert Wemyss, built magnificent houses in the area for wealthy Glasgowbusinessmen attracted to the area’s scenic ambience. Among the famous people associated with or born inHelensburgh are Henry Bell, Andrew Bonar Law, John Logie Baird, Deborah Kerr and Jack Buchanan.

Colquhoun Square, situated in the heart of Helensburgh, is just a block away from the sea front which linksColquhoun Street and West Princes Street. It is a picturesque area with gardens displaying an array ofbeautiful flowers and shrubs throughout the year. The magnificent structure of the West Kirk is in the northwest corner with the Helensburgh ceremony rooms just around the corner from the square.

When you arrive, we can arrange for appropriate music to be playing, and the registrar will be happy to usemusic of your choice. Floral arrangements are provided and you can supply your own flowers if you wish.

There is adequate parking for guests and there is also a pay and display car park behind the ceremonyrooms in Sinclair Street.

Paperwork for all marriages in the Helensburgh and Lomond area is processed at the Registration Office,Scotcourt House, 45 West Princes Street, Helensburgh G84 8NP. Helensburgh’s ceremony rooms will move to new premises in Clyde Street in summer 2015. Please check at www.argyll-bute.gov.uk for details in the meantime.

Helensburgh’s ceremony rooms are located at 25 West Kingstreet, formerly the registration office. Designed by localarchitect Robert Wemyss in 1890, the red sandstone buildingwas originally built to house Row Parish Halls for the localcouncil. It has many striking features, including a beautifullycarved art nouveau chair which is positioned at the front of theroom. This, along with an imposing fireplace and stained glasswindows, makes Helensburgh ceremony rooms a unique andpicturesque wedding venue.

How to find the ceremony rooms: entering Helensburgh fromthe top of Sinclair Street (B832) turn right at the first set oftraffic lights – the venue is on the left hand side half way alongthe first block. Alternatively, coming from the A814 coastroad, turn right at the first set of traffic lights in Helensburgh,go straight through the next set and then left at the third set.You will find us on the left, halfway along the block.

The ceremony rooms have permanent wheelchair access andcan accommodate a maximum of 40 seated guests.

Mid Argyll,Kintyre andthe Islands

A particularly picturesque town, Inveraray provides easy reach to many other tourist attractions. The town’sceremony rooms are located on an upper floor above the tourist office, with views overlooking the loch. Thefacilities can accommodate up to 30 people.

Pedestals of silk flowers are available but you can provide your own flowers if you wish. Music facilities and alimited choice of music is available and you are free to bring your own CDs.

There is parking available at the ceremony rooms and within easy walking distance. On weekdays, however,only two spaces can be reserved.

Lochgilphead/Ceann Loch GilbTwenty-four miles south of Inveraray on the A83 is thetown of Lochgilphead, home to Argyll and ButeCouncil headquarters at Kilmory Castle. The castlegardens, home to many rare rhododendrons andunusual trees and plants, offer a stunning backdropfor photographs, as do the nearby Crinan Canal andfront green.

The registrar’s office and ceremony rooms are at thetop of Argyll Street within easy walking distance of thewaterfront and car parking. The ceremony room canaccommodate up to 30 people. Located on theground floor, there is wheelchair access and toilets.

A scenic hour and a half drive from Glasgow past the shores of Loch Lomond and over the magnificent Restand Be Thankful, down the western side of beautiful Loch Fyne, brings you to the gateway of this stunningand historic area of Argyll.

Inveraray/Inbhir AoraThe Royal Burgh of Inveraray is theformer capital of Argyll and is the homeof the Duke of Argyll, Chief of the ClanCampbell. Neil Munro, author of thePara Handy tales, was born in the townin 1863.

Campbeltown/Ceann Loch Chille ChiarainThe Royal Burgh of Campbeltown is easilyreached by air (direct flights from Glasgow toMachrihanish) or road (the scenic A83 via LochLomond). You can also take the stress out ofdriving and make the most of the views by usingthe five times daily Glasgow to Campbeltownbus service. The local harbour has pontoons formooring and facilities nearby for yachtsmen.

The Kintyre peninsula is famous for golf, localwhisky and, of course, its stunning beauty,inspiring Sir Paul McCartney’s ‘ ’.

A drive down the coast quickly shows just what inspired him, with long sandybeaches, small intimate coves and thefamous ‘mist rolling in from the sea’. Thesebeautiful beaches make a stunning settingfor outside ceremonies.

Campbeltown’s registry office and ceremonyrooms are located in the magnificent A-listedsandstone Burnet building, designed by Sir J. J. Burnet. In the town centre, the Burnetbuilding also houses a museum and hasviews over to the Isle of Arran.

There are two ceremony rooms available, both with many original features and displaying paintings by artistsWilliam McTaggart, Archibald MacKinnon and Gregory Robson.

The large ceremony suite accommodates up to 70 people and is beautifully decorated in rustic shades, witha grand fireplace and fabulous wooden beams, overlooking the Lady McCartney memorial garden.

The smaller ceremony room, in cream with dark wood panelling, enjoys views over the loch to Davaar Islandand holds smaller, intimate parties of up to ten people.

Floral displays are provided in both rooms, with a music system in the larger suite to cater for personalchoices of music.

There is ample parking close to the office but we would recommend guests use Hall Street, which is a shortwalk away. There is disabled access to the rear of the building and a portable loop system for those who arehard of hearing.

Islay/IleWhile famous for its whisky, the island also has many beautiful beaches and several interesting historicalsites. Its many leisure facilities include golf, swimming or diving around some of the many local shipwrecks.By arrangement, the registrar is happy to conduct civil ceremonies in Gaelic for fluent Gaelic speakers. Theoffice is located in Bowmore, the island’s largest town. The ceremony rooms are tastefully decorated and canaccommodate up to 25 people. It also has disabled access and car parking facilities.

Behind the ceremony rooms are beautiful gardens run by a local group of people with disabilities. The groupare happy to allow the gardens to be used for photographs following the ceremony in return for a donation.

JuraThe island of Jura is accessed by ferry from PortAskaig on the north end of Islay. The localregistrar operates from home, with an assistantwho is also authorised to conduct civil ceremonies.

ColonsayYou can travel to the isle of Colonsay by ferryfrom Oban. There are many interesting walks andstunning sandy beaches on the island. Civilmarriages are conducted in the hall and canaccommodate intimate parties of four or largercelebrations for up to 100 people. There is an attractive background of red velvet curtainscomplemented by pink and lilac artificial flower displays.

GighaA 20-minute crossing from Tayinloan on the A83brings you to the charming island of Gigha – owned byits islanders since 2002. The island has a number ofsuitable venues – ask your registrar who will be ableto help you.

Mull/MuileThe Isle of Mull has becomeone of the most popularwedding destinations onthe west coast of Scotlandbecause of its superb sceneryand the romantic backdrop ofits coloured houses on thewaterfront. An abundanceof wildlife including otters,golden eagles and whitetailed eagles, to name buta few, can be found aroundthe island.

Couples can come on holiday and decide to be married in the Old Court Room in Tobermory, or in one of our scenic spots, on the beach, near a waterfall, on Beinn Mhòr, beside a loch, on a boat, or in one of the many hotels.

Oban and the surrounding area is known as ‘the gateway to the Highlands and Islands’ and is a perfect placeto celebrate and hold your civil ceremony. Oban/An t-ObanOban is a picturesque town which thrives on its touristand fishing industries. It is well known for its variedattractions and eye-catching skyline which includesMcCaig’s Tower, with its panoramic views over the town.

The registration office in Oban is ideal for small,intimate ceremonies for up to eight people. It is centrally located in Albany Street. For largerceremonies, there is a wide variety of stunning venuesboth in Oban and just outside the town.

The Court House and Prison was builtin 1862, on Breadalbane Street. Theceremony room is now in the oldcourtroom which still has lots oforiginal features. Above the bench is areproduction, of the “burgh coat ofarms” which was used up to 1975.You will also find more examples of work from other local artists inthis room which can comfortablyaccommodate up to 44 people andhas a stunning panoramic view overTobermory Bay and the Sound of Mull with the hills of Morvern andArdnamurchan in the background.

The Island of Mull is the second largest island of the Inner Hebrides and Tobermory, (Gaelic Tobar Mhoire,meaning "Mary's well”), is the capital of the island, Legend has it that the wreck of a Spanish galleon, ladenwith gold, lies somewhere in the mud at the bottom of Tobermory Bay.

As with all our ceremony rooms, the main aim is to help make your day a very special occasion. You can playmusic of your choice or add a short poem or reading to the service – just ask your registrar. We can also sendyou a photograph after the service. As well as toilet facilities, there is an extra room available for anyone whomight wish to change. Our staff have extensive local knowledge and can assist you with contact details foraccommodation and other services like florists, hairdressers, photographers and Scottish pipers. They canalso act as witnesses on occasion – ask your registrar for details.

Tiree/TiriodhTiree is the most westerly island of the InnerHebrides. With its golden beaches, lustrous sea and picturesque scenery enhanced by anabundance of wildlife and flowers, the island is anideal setting for your civil ceremony.

Tiree is renowned for its world-famous surf andenjoys more sunshine than practically anywhereelse in the UK, earning the island its nicknamethe Hawaii of the North.

A daily ferry service operates from Oban to Tireeduring the summer months with a more limitedservice operating in winter. The daily crossingfrom Oban takes four hours. There is also a dailyflight to Glasgow with a journey time ofapproximately one hour and a twice-weeklyservice from Connel.
