What is a Photo Essay?A collection of photos that tell a story or have as the subject a particular theme.

Sometimes a picture really is worth a thousand words.

The whatAs you read the novel, you will be taking note of various quotes and images you find compelling. Over time, the text you compile will begin to show a pattern. At the end, instead of writing an essay, you will create a photo essay of a theme or concept you think is the most powerful from the book. You will then present it to the class.

Your photo essay should attempt to create a cumulative effect, beginning perhaps with setting and moving through a series of images to end with a conclusive statement in pictures. This process is not simply a string of similar images connected together, but a story

The howOnce you have decided on a theme, search the internet for images that present that theme, either in a progression to build to a conclusion. At the end, anyone viewing your chosen images should easily be able to identify the concept that unites them all.

Your photo essay is a narrative. This dynamic story should be built on a set of core values and emotions that inspire emotion in your audience. Anger. Joy. Fear. Hurt. Excitement. Draw out the emotions within the story by locating these emotions in your chosen images. You want to use emotion as a connecting point.

Your presentation should contain a minimum of 10 images. The images must evoke some emotional response in viewers.The images must relate to the book specifically.The images should be school-appropriate (specifically: no nudity or sexually explicit content; think of my 91 year old grandmother as your audience)
