This is an exciting time at the Ventura County Library We are officially launching our first ever One County One Book program and invite everyone in Ventura County to participate with us in this community-wide reading program You can participate in many ways ndash by reading the book joining a book discussion group donating a copy of the book to your local library or attending a related event at your Ventura Coun-ty Library branch The book selection Barbarian Days A Surfing Life by William Finnegan is an excellent read and a Pulitzer Prize-winning book We will soon also be announcing companion books for children of all ages that will explore similar themes found in the main book selection In this way everyone can participate

It is also the start of the annual Summer Reading program at the Library Did you know that students who donrsquot read proficiently by the 3rd grade are four times more likely to drop out of school Summer learning loss is cumulative over time it can create a gap of two and up to five years by the time students reach high school Ensure your children avoid the lsquosummer slidersquo by signing them up for this fun free and rewarding program at your local library
