I have come to rely on my cell phone for many things. I can look at an app

for news notifications. I can find directions to places I need to go. I can text

with my family and friends. I use an app to make appointments and check my

calendar. I can listen to radio stations through my phone. Of course, I can also

use my cell phone to make and receive phone calls, imagine that? The other

day I discovered my phone was actually working without my knowing it. I had

my phone in my pocket while I was mowing. At one point, I paused to take a

break and I heard my phone ringtone. My phone was actually cycling through

ringtones. Later that evening I discovered I had called a few people and texted

another. The text was something like this: Wyzopusl;kjpoerj. I told my friend

I was shooting for Egyptian hieroglyphics.

I also use my phone to help me sleep and to awaken me. I set the alarm on

it each night and then hit the snooze function when it goes off in the morning.

At night, I open the app that has relaxing sounds to help me sleep. I prefer the

rain sound. But one morning I woke up and I had overslept. My phone alarm

hadn’t sounded. In fact, the phone was completely off. Usually, I leave it

plugged in and sure enough it was still plugged in to the phone. What I

discovered, is that the other end of the cord was loose and was not getting

power. All through the night my phone was running down the battery until it

suddenly was empty and the phone shut down. No more rain sounds and no

more alarm.

As we enter our fall programming at church, I want to ask you to consider

ways you can “plug in” to what we do here at Trinity. One of the primary ways

God renews us and strengthens us for life is through our church and its

ministry. When we unplug from church, we are cutting ourselves off from one

of the great ways God wants to empower us and use us for God’s mission in

the world. Maybe this summer you have travelled or your kids have been at

camps or you’ve just gotten out of the routine and rhythms of church life. Fall

is a special opportunity to plug in to church life. I want to encourage you to

find places and groups and ministries that will enrich your own life walk with

Christ for your sake and for the sake of others you are called to serve and love.
