NEW AGRICULTURAL OPERA-TOR PROGRAM LAUNCHED IN SASKATCHEWANgov.ca - Hands-on training to help ad-dress farm labour challengesToday, Federal Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz and Saskatchewan Agricul-ture Minister Lyle Stewart announced the launch of the Agricultural Opera-tor Program. “Our government recognizes the importance that labour plays in driv-ing growth in our agriculture indus-try,” Ritz said. “Today’s investment will help those interested in a career
in agriculture develop the knowledge and skills needed to find gainful em-ployment here in Saskatchewan.” “Producers have indicated that they need more skilled labour for their operations and this program direct-ly responds to their needs,” Stewart said. “Farmers can send current or potential employees through the pro-gram to develop or help fine tune their skills. Additionally, general labourers without a farm background will have an opportunity to gain the experience needed to get involved in the indus-try.”

The Agricultural Operator Program was a commitment made in the Sas-katchewan Plan for Growth. It is a module-based program offering prac-tical, hands-on training to individuals interested in working on Saskatche-wan farms. Students and employers will have the flexibility to choose the entire program or specific modules relevant to their farms. The first three modules will be seed-ing, spraying and scouting, and har-vest to be delivered at the Parkland Regional College in Yorkton. Addi-tional modules will be developed for the livestock industry including hay-ing, beef cattle reproduction and calv-ing, and cattle husbandry and han-dling. Following the pilot program, the provincial government will work to expand the program to other re-gional colleges across Saskatchewan. The pilot program will start with a seeding module beginning on March 3, 2014. The module is comprised of 36 hours of hands-on workshops and nine hours of online delivery. It will cover essential farm knowledge for seeding processes and equipment maintenance. The spraying module will be available in late May and the harvest module will be available in early July. “We are pleased to run the pilot year of this course at our Yorkton Cam-pus,” Parkland College President Fay Myers said. “The timing of the mod-ules matches the critical times on the farm, so employees can take the Seed-ing Module during the time right be-fore seeding. Then they can then put their education to use right away in the field.” Classes for the seeding module run from March 3 to April 16, 2014 at the Parkland College in Yorkton. For more information on how to apply for the program, go to www.agriculture.gov.sk.ca/GrowingForward2 or www.parklandcollege.sk.ca. The federal and provincial govern-
ments will invest $200,000 in funding for the development and delivery of the Agricultural Operator Program pilot through Growing Forward 2.

A mother and daughter were out shopping at the mall. The mother saw an expensive fur coat and stated, “This year, I think I will buy my present instead of making you and
dad shop for me and I think this fur coat would be perfect
too.” The daughter protested, “But
mom, some helpless, poor creature has to suffer so that
you can have this.” “Don’t worry honey,” says the mother, “your father won’t get the bill for a couple of weeks.”

After more than three centuries, the Hudson’s Bay Company is getting out of the fur trade. The company was created in 1670 to trade animal pelts for goods at remote outposts across North Amer-ica. But by 1991 the appetite for fur has pretty much dried up and The Bay is cutting its losses. It’s a sad day for some 100,000 Canadi-ans employed in the fur industry, but the anti-fur lobby is claiming a huge victory.
• The Hudson’s Bay Company was formed when England’s King Charles II granted a royal charter to “The Company of Adventurers” on May 2, 1670. The charter gave the company rights to “sole trade and commerce” over all lands that drained into Hudson’s Bay -- al-most four million square kilometres. That’s 10 per cent of the earth’s surface and more than 40 per cent of modern Canada plus much of Minnesota and North Dakota. • The Hudson’s Bay Company began as a simple fur-trading enter-prise, but evolved into a huge trading and exploration company with agents around the world. Its numerous trading posts were fought over by English and French battleships until the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713. As Canada became settled, the company gave up control of its land in the 1869 Treaty of Surrender and sold off much of the land it owned over the next 85 years. • In the late 1800s the Hudson’s Bay Company started opening de-partment stores. The original six were founded in Winnipeg, Cal-gary, Vancouver, Edmonton, Victoria and Saskatchewan. By 1978 the Bay had become the largest chain store in Canada. In 2003 it operates more than 500 stores, led by the Bay and Zellers chains. • By the 1920s, beavers were becoming scarce in the Canadian north and west and independent fur farms began to provide much of the fur stock, squeezing the Hudson’s Bay Company out of the business. The Bay then got involved in conservation efforts and ran fur farms of its own. It also warehoused, auctioned and sold furs on consign-ment around the world. • During the recession of the 1980s, the Hudson’s Bay Company was forced to save money by making the unpopular decision to sell off its northern stores and fur auction houses. This process was completed in 1991.• In 1997, the Bay retraced its steps on selling fur and once again opened fur salons in sever-al stores. Animal rights groups responded with calls for a boycott of the company, but the Bay countered that it was simply trying to meet cus-tomer demand. • The Hudson’s Bay Company is said to be the oldest company in the world. Several other companies also lay claim to this distinction, including Japanese manufacturing giant Sumi-tomo Corporation (over 400 years old), Swed-ish paper company Stora (first documented in 1288 AD), and the Royal Mint in Llantrisant, Wales (287 AD).• In 2006, South Carolina businessman Jerry Zucker bought Hudson’s Bay Co. for more than $1 billion and became its first American pres-ident. Zucker’s company, Maple Leaf Heritage Investments, paid $15.25 a share to take over controlling interest.

Three engineers and three accountants were traveling by train to a confer-ence. At the station, the three accountants each bought tickets and watched as
the three engineers bought only one ticket.“How are three people going to travel on only one ticket?” asked
an accountant.“Watch and you’ll see”, answered an engineer.
They all boarded the train. The accountants took their respective seats, but the three engineers all crammed into a rest room and closed the door behind them. Shortly after the train departed, the conductor came around collecting
tickets. He knocked on the restroom door and said, “Ticket, please”.The door opened just a crack and a single arm emerged with a ticket in hand.
The conductor took it and moved on.The accountants saw this and agreed it was a quite clever idea. So, after the conference, the accountants decide to copy the engineers on the return trip
and save some money (being clever with money, and all that). When they got to the station, they bought a single ticket for the return trip. To their astonish-
ment, the engineers didn’t buy a ticket at all.“How are you going to ride without a ticket”? said one perplexed accountant.
“Watch and you’ll see”, answered an engineer. When they boarded the train, the three accountants crammed into a restroom and the three engineers crammed into another one nearby. The train depart-ed. Shortly afterward, one of the engineers left his restroom and walked over to the restroom where the accountants were hiding. He knocked on the door
and said, “Ticket, please.”

SAFE SNOWMOBILINGhttps://canadasafetycouncil.org
Snowmobiling has become a very popular winter sport for Canadians. There are currently over 700,000 reg-istered snowmobiles in Canada and over 125,000 kilometres of snowmo-bile trails.
Every year people are injured and killed while participating in a pastime that should be remembered with only fond memories. Injuries and deaths that are related to snowmobiling can be prevented. Frequently reported contributing factors in collisions include excessive speed, drowning, unsafe operation, inattention, and operating under the influence of alcohol.
One of the safest snowmobiling rules is never to cross lakes or rivers. Be-sides the danger of plunging through the ice, you have far less traction for starting, turning and stopping on ice than on snow. Collisions on lakes account for a significant number of accidents. Don’t hold the attitude that lakes are flat, wide-open areas, free of obstructions. Remember, if you can ride and turn in any direction, without boundaries, so can other riders. The threat of a collision, then, can come from any direction.
However, if you do snowmobile on the ice, make absolutely sure the ice is safely frozen. Don’t trust the judgment of other snowmobilers. You are responsible for your own safe snowmobiling. Drowning is a leading cause of snowmobile fatalities. Consider buying a buoyant snowmobile suit. If you go through the ice, remember that your snowmobile suit (even a non-buoyant one) and helmet may keep you afloat for several minutes. Slide back onto the ice, using anything sharp to dig in for better pull. Kick your feet to propel you onto the ice, like a seal. If the ice keeps breaking, continue moving toward shore or the direction from which you came. Don’t remove your gloves or mitts. Once on the ice, roll away from the hole. Don’t stand until well away from the hole.
