Youth in the European Union Youth population Youth population projections
Empowering young people and creating avorable con-ditions or them to develop their skills, to work andto play an active role in society is essential to ensurethe sound economic and social development o theEuropean Union. This is particularly true in the con-text o globalization, knowledge-based economiesand ageing societies, where it is crucial that youngpersons are given the opportunity to achieve their ullpotential.
In this respect, Eurostat intends to publish a statisticalbook on Youth in the European Union in early 2009,providing details on the situation o young people inthe EU. This publication will cover a wide range o top-ics such as demography, health, education, transition
rom school to work, poverty, living conditions, use o in ormation and communication technology (ICT) andparticipation in voluntary activities.
The present leafet provides an insight on a number o aspects that will be developed in the orthcoming edi-tion o Youth in the European Union.
