YOUTHBUILD ACCOMPLISHMENTS

YouthBuild Construction staff trains our members in the trades using PACT, or Pre-Apprenticeship Certification Training. A PACT Certificate is an industry validation of their proficiency in the trades that they are learning, and is also an important tool to build self esteem and encourage students to pursue their educational and industry career goals. The PACT training is divided into 5 separate Skills Achievement Records (SARS): Safety, Construction Math, Tools and Materials, Employability, and Carpentry. Students must pass all SARS to be certified. This certificate is nationally approved by the HomeBuilders Institute, making students more employable and gives them an advantage over other prospective employees.

PACT TRAINING: WHAT IS IT?

We are excited to announce our newest education partner, The Bridge Academy for Academic Achievement. The Bridge Academy is a small learning community set within the larger Salem High School and i s dedicated to promot ing “ a c a d e m i c , c i v i c , a n d s o c i a l competencies in a safe academic setting”. Since March 2015, we have been working with The Bridge Academy and have had great success.

As a part of the larger Salem High School, The Bridge Academy has the ability to help us move forward in our expansion plans by allowing us to draw from a pool of candidates larger than any we’ve had previously. They are a wonderful and supportive partner to us and their students are dedicated YouthBuild members.

YOUTHBUILD FUN FACT

I ’m in YouthBu i ld to fu r ther my education, and skills. I have always like working with my hands and was always good at math. But didn’t do as well in other subjects. Reading and writing is difficult for me. One obstacle was moving. Every new school I went to, I slacked more. As I got older I decided to quit school and get a job. I tried going back to school but didn’t finish as I planned. I had to decide whether to possibly graduate on time or make $600 a week. But now I am determined to get my GED and further my education. YouthBuild inspires me, gives me motivation to keep going with my education and life goals. YouthBuild also offers me a lot of l ife changing opportunities.” – Alan Maldonado
