You've heard of Zombie Chases, Haunted 5ks, Color Runs, Tough Mudders, and every other kind of race in between. Well, the Office of Residence Life and the Maglott Hall staff is happy to announce the first annual Dolly Dash fun 5k and relay race.

On Saturday, November 4th at 10:30am, you have the chance to participate in a very unique 5k and fun-run relay for a great cause. The Dolly Parton Imagination Library of Hardin County is the official philanthropy of ONU ResLife. The organization focuses on increasing literacy for children in Hardin County. All proceeds from the Dolly Dash will go directly to the Imagination Library.

the art of getting cozy in your space

"Hygge (mass noun) [pronounced hue-guh]: A quality of coziness and comfortable conviviality that engenders a feeling of contentment or well-being (regarded as a defining characteristic of Danish culture)."

by Hailey Holke, Graduate Assistant

How to Hygge:

That is the Oxford Dictionary definition of hygge, a traditionally Danish concept that has become a trend that is sweeping the U.S. The word actually has no U.S. translation, with the closest word being "cozy." I've done my own research into hygge, and I've decided it's going to be a staple "vibe" in my living space for years to come. Hygge is centered around comfort in your space, in yourself, and with your friends. And we're approaching the peak time of year for hygge:

"Winter is the most hygge time of year. It is candles, nubby woolens, shearling slippers, woven textiles, pastries, blond wood, sheepskin rugs, lattes with milk-foam hearts, and a warm fireplace. Hygge can be used as a noun, adjective, verb, or compound noun, like hyggebukser, otherwise known as that shlubby pair of pants you would never wear in public but secretly treasure..." (Anna Altman, 2016, The New Yorker).

So, you get the idea. Hygge is curling up with your favorite blanket and pillow, in your most comfortable sweats, fuzzy socks, and oversized sweater with a steaming cup of tea or coffee and your favorite book, and maybe a friend or two. It involves treating yourself to relaxation and rest in the coziest, comfiest way possible.

At this point I know you're wondering, "how can I make hygge happen? When I googled it, it was just a bunch of aesthetically pleasing pictures of fireplacesand mittens and candles! I can't have candles in my room, and I definitely don't have a fireplace. This seems impossible..." Well, I can assure you - you can totally hygge in your residence hall room, no matter where you're at on campus. Here are some easy ways I've implemented hygge into my space (and you can check Pinterest for tons of ideas, too!):

1. Put up some twinkle lights

2. Be presentsoft, warm lighting really sets the hygge mood; with christmas coming up, it's

easy to find twinkle lights for a great price!

turn off your electronics and enjoy a few hours without the distractions of

social media, email, and texting - unplug and just be.

3. Treat yourselfmake some hot cocoa, hot tea, or coffee and enjoy with slice of warm banana

bread (recipe on page 3) or even a muffin from Cosi.

4. Get Comfyput on your comfiest clothes, bust out your coziest blanket and pillows and

melt into a cuddle puddle.

5. Bring the outside inset a succulent or two in your windowsill, on your end table, or on your desk

for a more permanent hygge atmosphere.

6. Have a hygge experienceplay a board game, do a puzzle, or just netflix and chill with your friends-

- hygge is all about enjoying simple experiences with those you love

7. Listen to some mellow musicspotify is a free app you can download to your computer or smartphone - it

has tons of curated "mood" playlists to compliment your hygge atmosphere

Basically, hygge is all about being happy and cozy in the spaces you inhabit, and it's pretty easy to do! I can almost guarantee it'll make for a much comfier fall and winter in your room! For more tips on hyggecheck out the articles in the references, and like I said, Pinterest is always a great resource too! Happy hygge-

ing!

1 medium sized super ripe banana 1 large egg, at room temperature 1 tablespoon flavorless vegetable oil ¼ cup firmly packed light brown sugar ¼ cup all-purpose flour ¼ teaspoon baking powder ¼ teaspoon vanilla extract Pinch salt 1 tablespoon finely chopped walnuts or pecans (optional)

Mash the banana with a fork in a small bowl. Mash in egg (use a whisking motion with your fork) and oil. Stir in brown sugar, flour, baking powder, vanilla and salt and optional nuts just until blended. Scrape into 12-ounce microwave safe mug and cook at high power for 2 minutes. Check mug cake by testing with a bamboo skewer, which should come out with just a few crumbs clinging. Cook in 10-second bursts if it needs further baking but it shouldn’t be more than 2 ½ minutes total. Eat immediately!
