YSF- FEBS Working Group on the Career of Young Scientists Claudina Rodrigues-Pousada Activities of the YSF at the 22 nd IUBMB/37th FEBS2012, Seville FROM SINGLE MOLECULES TO SYSTEM BIOLOGY The organization of the scientific program of the 12th YSF, 2012 was completed according to the program included as an annex of this report (annex1). The YSF was held in the seaside resort of Costa Ballena (Cádiz), in sunny Spain, 1-4 September 2012. The site was indeed nice but unfortunately quite expensive that among other matters made the budget to exceed largely 1,000 per student. The budget is shown in annex 2 in which can be seen that the total sum is 136,000 Euros. A comparison with the budget of the 11 th YSF with the one of this year is presented. I have identified a few problems that can explain this discrepancy. For instance the organizers have taken as reference the budget of the 10th YSF meeting held in Gothenburg which presented an excess of 13,000 Euros. However this divided by 125 students gives 1,109.24 Euros per student e.g. 11% increase in Gothenburg and now we are spending 1 360.€ per student that means 36% increase! Another problem is related to the fact that the chairman of the Organizing committee of the 12th YSF of Seville did not attend the 11 th YSF in Torino and as such they could not be well informed about all the process. The lack of communication was also a problem as the OC worked independently without asking the correct information. The Organizing Committee (OC) was composed of Irene Díaz-Moreno (the chairman) and Ricardo Louro (Vice-chairman) and José Manuel García-Heredia besides 6 students to help them. Many thanks are due to all of them for their efforts in arranging with efficiency this event. I will give a detailed oral report on the YSF meeting at the council with more relevant information on the way how the forum developed. As you can see in annex 3, 36 countries were represented, but we did not have applicants from Norway. The total number of applicants was 490 from which 100 were selected (Figure 1), and the average age was between 26 and 28 years old. Another aspect which should be emphasized is that the number of female applicants is like in the previous year’s higher (67%) than the number of male applicants (33%). We equilibrated however this ratio after selection (45% M and 55% F). I prepared a questionnaires addressed to the students with FEBS grants whose answers will be analysed and I will show to the council.

Activities of the YSF at the 22nd IUBMB/37th FEBS2012, Seville

FROM SINGLE MOLECULES TO SYSTEM BIOLOGY

The organization of the scientific program of the 12th YSF, 2012 was completed according to the program included as an annex of this report (annex1). A comparison with the budget of the 11th YSF with the one of this year is presented. Another problem is related to the fact that the chairman of the Organizing committee of the 12th YSF of Seville did not attend the 11th YSF in Torino and as such they could not be well informed about all the process.

13th YSF in St Petersburg

With respect of the 13th YSF to be held in St Petersburg next year the chairman is Alexey Belogurov who is in contact with me addressing all the pertinent questions and I am also sending all the information as to avoid all the problems which we have had this year mainly the one related to the budget. I could appreciate his way of working because he came to Seville and has collaborated in the selection of our students. It was really quite helpful his contribution in this task.
