Become a Horstmann Scholar Donor with a gift of $10,000 or more
Gifts to the Yale School of Medicine Alumni Fund help to sustain vital aspects of the school — from teaching to student life to research — but no area is more important than financial aid. To reduce the burden of debt on our students, our goal is to replace all need-based loans in our financial aid packages with scholarship funds. Growing these resources will allow students to launch their careers without incurring overwhelming debt during their time at YSM. Robust financial aid will encourage the brightest and most passionate students from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds to choose Yale as the starting point for their careers in medicine.
In recognition of leadership gifts of $10,000 or more, YSM offers donors the unique opportunity to name a one-year scholarship in honor of whomever they wish—themselves, a loved one, or a classmate—and will receive a profile of the student recipient.

The Horstmann Scholar Program is named for Dorothy M. Her findings helped develop the acceptance of the oral polio vaccine. In 1961, Dr. Horstmann became the first female
professor of medicine at Yale, and in 1969 she was the first woman in the university to hold an endowed chair. She became an elected member of the National Academy of Sciences in 1975.

“Recruiting the best and the brightest requires that we make medical school accessible to all students regardless of means. Reducing and ultimately eliminating the debt burden of our students will broaden their choices as they become leaders in medicine.”
