The Alma Mater of Armenia,

Yerevan State University, has

completed a fruitful 90 years. As

a leading academic and cultural

institution YSU has carried out its

crucial and honorable mission of passing on to our generations the rich national-cultural traditions

of the Armenian people. At the same time, pursuing the realization of the role of the inheritor of

national-cultural traditions, YSU has taken the obligation to confront universal values, as well as to

find different solutions for modern issues in the area of educational, socio-economic and scientific

affairs.

By focusing on the provision of higher education, the Alma Mater’s main goal is to reach the

highest level of international standards of education. YSU has realized a number of fundamental

reforms in the current decade, which stem from the requirements of the Bologna Declaration.

Currently the University is involved in various academic-research projects. These projects call

for the effective provision of education, the rise of professorial staff qualifications, development of

research, as well as modernization of the required technical basis.

INTRODUCTION

In 1918, when the Armenian statehood was restored, the education provision once again

held a place of vital importance for the Armenian people. Although government members of

the young independent republic faced a number of problems, which could not be ignored,

the republic stood on the verge of collapse. Facing and trying to find ways to overcome

numerous obstacles, the authorities of the Republic of Armenia focused their attention on the

establishment of the institution of higher education, which would provide the opportunity

to prepare historians, philologists, who would train new generations in the spirit of national

ideology and state mentality.

After long-lasting discussions the RA Council of Ministers made a decision to establish

the University in Yerevan on May 16, 1919. Having overcome many difficulties, on January

31 1920, in the premises of Alexandrapol’s (now Gyumri) Trade School, the solemn opening

ceremony of the University of Armenia took place, where the RA Government members and

foreign consuls were invited.

After the establishment of Soviet rule in Armenia, the first National Commissioner on

Educational Affairs of the Armenian SSR Ashot Hovhannisyan issued a decree on “The

Restructuring of the University” on December 17 of 1920 and the University of Armenia was

renamed into Yerevan Popular University. Professor Armenologist Hakob Manandyan was

elected YPU Rector.

The period of 1960-1990 became the era of unprecedented development for YSU. New

faculties and research laboratories were opened. One of the most important achievements

was the foundation of the Centre for Armenian Studies. Publishing activities started to grow

rapidly. Scientific research and monographs of the prominent lecturers, as well as various

manuals, textbooks, periodicals and compilations were issued.

In 1991 specialists were already being trained in the areas of 32 specializations at 17

faculties and the YSU Ijevan Branch was founded in 1994. Four faculties are available here

now and about 1500 students study here. The 1995-96 academic year marked the beginning

of the new educational process for Yerevan State University. With the intent to develop an

educational system, corresponding to international standards, YSU, as well as a number of

other Armenian higher education institutions, adopted the two-level system of education.

Beginning with mid 90s to date consistent work has been done in the direction of bachelor’s

and master’s educational standards regulation, as well as in the area of the educational process

improvement. The University provides a third education degree, too, which is implemented

within the framework of post-graduate training – it is the three-year postgraduate education.

The studies end with a post-graduate dissertation defense and the Candidate of Science degree

awarding: 13 professional councils function in the structure of the University.

Alma Mater has made a solid investment in the establishment of the Third Republic of

Armenia after the proclamation of the independence. First and current presidents of the RA

are YSU graduates. Three Prime Ministers and many ministers of the republic have also

graduated from YSU at different times. Alma Mater graduates permanently make their

contribution into the prosperity and development of our country.

Currently about 20 thousand students study at 20 faculties of YSU (including

about 2000 students in Ijevan Branch and 3000 distance learning students). The Alma

Mater professorial staff is comprised of 1.500 representatives: 197 are professors,

496 – associate professors, 377 - assistants, 417 – lecturers. The National Academy of

Sciences 19 academicians and 23 corresponding members are involved in academic

and fundamental and applied research processes of the university. Academic activities

are organized by more than 100 chairs, which are equipped with modern facilities and

equipment.

Yerevan State University’s activities are based upon providing high-quality

education, to ensure the competitiveness of its alumni in the global labor

market, as well as their integration into the European higher education sector. To

confront the challenges and to effectively implement the educational mission,

YSU continuously upgrades the content of its educational activities, applying

current and effective training methods to provide students with extra auxiliary

services to improve in a number of other directions as well.

Content and structural changes in the educational process started in YSU in

1995-96. This transition offered a different educational system, awarding the

alumni qualifications of bachelor and master.

In the framework of the Bologna Process, the ECTS credit system is gradually

being introduced in YSU beginning with the 2007-08 academic year. Currently,

the credit system is applied for 54 bachelor and 110 master educational programs

and more than 15 500 students have been trained (both regular education and

distance learning). Now, over 1250 lecturers, of which 12% are professors, 35%

associate professors are involved in the training process of YSU and 65% of

lecturers have achieved various scientific degrees. The student-lecturer ratio is

12.4:1.

Four-year bachelor education program’s work volume is 240 credits and

consists of the following structures:

general humanities and social-economic courses,

general mathematical and natural sciences courses,

general professional training,

special professional training,

other educational modules.

Master’s two-year educational program work volume is 120 credits and

consists of 2 main structures - education and research.

The Educational structure is as follows:

The research structure is as follows:

scientific supervisor’s seminar,

research work,

research Practice,

research-pedagogical practice,

Master thesis.

The multifunctional system for the constant evaluation of YSU students’

knowledge is available in the HEI. Its main goal is to organize labor activities

proportionate to the educational process, to foster students’ individual work, and

to introduce elements of competition, to improve the level of attendance.

YSU has joined the pan-European student exchange program Erasmus

Mundus, which provides students with the opportunity to study at European

universities and to transfer the credits earned to Yerevan State University as a

part of their learning program.

The YSU PhD education program has been reformed, too, which currently

prepares future researchers applying a three-year educational program, which,

along with the research part, contains an educational part, too. The studies end

with a post-graduate dissertation defense and the Candidate of Science degree

award: 13 professional councils function in the structure of the University.

The main principle of YSU’s current stage of development is the essential improvement

of the educational quality. In this direction, YSU is implementing complex activities aimed at

the education quality assessment and control system development. Large scale work is done

for the compliance of the research and education programs and labor requirements, as well as

introduction of mechanisms for students and alumni feedback, etc.

Professorial staff qualification as a vital precondition for high quality education provision,

has been improved and modernized, too. It is implemented as in the form of professional

training, as well as special courses, aimed at the development of tutoring skills.

Postgraduate Education

YSU also provides post university education, which is aimed to provide university

education quality and continuity.

Postgraduate programs are:

Re-qualification of teaching staff,

Professional training

The essential postgraduate program is a teaching staff re-qualification program, which

enables gathering the best teachers and scientists, and contribution to accumulation and

delivery of the newest information.

Re-qualification for people with higher education is provided in the following

professions.

Civil service,

Real estate assessment,

Psychology.

Organizing the first program, YSU has a mission to establish a civil service system

in Armenia, by re-qualifying civil servants from the Staff of the President, the National

Assembly, and the Government. The Real Estate Assessment program is designed to provide

one of the most important subsystems of the developing market economy with personnel.

The Psychology course is designed to meet the educational expectations and requirements of

a person in the rapidly changing public life.

ACADEMIC AND SCIENTIFIC PROCESS

Scientific ProcessYSU is one of the leading scientific and educational centres in the RA and is a research centre,

taking into account its academic and pedagogical potential and achievements. According to

2009 data, about 1000 researchers are involved in the scientific-research process in YSU (348

are full time researchers). In comparison with 2005, in 2009 the financial allocations for the

scientific field have increased by more than three times and are 3, 2 million USD currently.

After the restoration of independence, the number of research laboratories and centres

has increased, too. Currently 21 research laboratories and 11 centres have developed their

activities in YSU. The greater part of the laboratories is occupied in the area of natural

The director of YSU Sarkis and Marie Izmirlian Library is Dr. Ashot Alexanyan,

Candidate of Politics, Associate professor.

YSU library was founded on the 28th of December, 1920 and the ceremonial opening

took place on the 8th of November, 1922. The temporary director of the library has been

Hakob Manandyan. In 1927, 52 thousand units were available in the library and the number

of readers was 530. Currently YSU academic library has about 2 million books/units, 1, 2

million of which are academic. The library has 85 staff members.

On October 12th, 1994, the framework of events devoted to the 75th anniversary of

establishment of YSU the new library building was formally opened. In 1995 an Armenian

sponsor from Switzerland Tigran Izmirlian donated 1 million USD to the YSU Library for

the acquisition of modern technology and modernization of service.

Library funds are usually replenished through subscription, book exchange and

commercial deals. Together with that there also exist auxiliary sources of replenishment,

such as donation and financial aid. In regard to this, Calouste Gulbenkian, Andrei Sakharov,

Helen Takesyan, Karen Grigorian funds are of significant importance, due to which the

library possesses a great number of valuable books. These books are mainly in foreign

languages (English, German, French, and Spanish). The assistance by the Armenian Branch

of Armenian Branch of “Open Society Institute and Foundation” was also considerable.

There are also many periodicals and journals in the library (101 different 4530 unit) that

were published abroad, but are in Armenian. Those are “Hayrenik” (Boston, 1922-1948),

“Droshak” (Geneva, 1989-1980), “Bazmavep”, “Armenian Church”, “Vem”, “Hayastani

Kochnak”, etc. Ancient manuscripts are also available in YSU Library.

Today the UN, OSCE material depositories as well as a Greek Library Centre, German

Corner and Russian Centre function in the library.

Exchange of experience and international cooperation is of great significance for the

modernization and the development of the library. In regard to this are significant programs

realized by Rostock University, Leibniz Hannover University and London Middlesex

University. Since 2007, our Library has been an institutional member of the International

Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) and Association of European

Research Libraries (LIBER).

By decision of the 5th Session of YSU Academic Council, (2007) a number of structural

changes were made, which were aimed at the improvement of the library management

system taking also into consideration the experience of the European universities. Currently

six departments operate in the structure of the library: Circulation, Literature and Press,

Computer Services and Automation, Acquisition and Processing, Depository, Antique, Rare

and Art Literature. In 2007 the Library Strategic Development Project was adopted by YSU

Academic Council.

The online order system and electronic catalogue functions in the Library allows the

opportunity to make orders. Eight reading halls and two open shelf systems fund the

functioning of the Library.

The field of student and alumni affairs has been increasingly developed during last five

years. Despite the traditions of public work had high priority during former soviet system

(students were actively involved in Comsomol) the current trends of student extracurricular

and public activities were formed after the establishment of independent republic.

The combination of activities of independent student self-governing organization

(student council) where student participation is based on voluntary involvement and

corresponding structural sub-divisions of university administration provides the effective

balance of democratic student involvement and professional work. This process provide

students’ participation in university governing bodies and decision making process,

protection of students’ rights and representation of their interests from one hand and the

social, economic,

public and cultural participation from the other hand. Student scientific and educational

development has a high priority for the university and these issues are dealt by Student

Scientific Society. Cultural projects and events are coordinated by the Cultural Centre,

provides the activity of Student theater, chamber orchestra, choir, dancing ensemble and

other groups.

The Yerevan State University is considered as a leading high education institution of

Armenia with a unique student environment within university. Due to the combination of

high quality education with this unique atmosphere the students’ personal and professional

growth allows future graduates of the university to play significant role in almost all spheres

of public life of Armenia.

The special attention is paid to the issues of university-alumni relations. This is

relatively new direction for university and an on-going work with alumni with new methods

and approaches is considered as an important factor for development.

Student Affairs Division

The head of the Division is Dr. Mihran Hakobyan, Candidate of History

The division functions in university as a unit of university administration. The main

function of the Division is to provide smooth relations and cooperation between student

self-governing organization – Student Council and Student Scientific Society from one side

and the university administrative and teaching staff from the other side.

Student Affairs Division promotes development of student self-governance, runs student

training courses and creates an atmosphere for active student participation in university life.

The special projects and activities are initiated to encourage student voluntary work, civil

participation and citizenship.
