  • 6INTRODUCTION

After the restoration of Armenias statehood in 1918, the provision of education became of vital importance for the Armenian people once again. Government officials of the young independent republic faced a number of problems which could not be ignored, and the republic stood on the verge of collapse. Facing and trying to find ways to overcome numerous obstacles, the authorities of the Republic of Armenia focused their attention on the establishment of the institution of higher education, which would provide the opportunity to prepare historians, philologists, who would go on to train new generations that would have the spirit of national ideology and state mindset.

After long discussions the RA Council of Ministers took the decision on establishing the University of Yerevan on May 16, 1919. Having overcome many difficulties, on January 31 1920, the solemn opening ceremony of the University of Armenia took place on the premises of Alexandrapols (now Gyumri) Trade School, and among the guests were members of the Government of the Republic of Armenia and foreign consuls.

After the establishment of Soviet rule in Armenia, the first National Commissioner on Educational Affairs of the Armenian SSR Ashot Hovhannisyan issued a decree on The Restructuring of the University on 17 December 1920. The University of Armenia was renamed the Peoples University of Yerevan, and Professor Armenologist Hakob Manandyan was elected YPU Rector.

The period between 1960 and 1990 became the era of unprecedented development for YSU. New faculties and research laboratories were opened. One of the most important achievements was the foundation of the Centre for Armenian Studies. Publishing started to grow rapidly. Scientific research and monographs of prominent lecturers, as well as various manuals, textbooks, periodicals and compilations were issued.

In 1991 specialists were already being trained in the areas of 32 specialisations in 17 faculties, and the YSU Ijevan Branch was founded in 1994. Four faculties are available here now and about 1500 students study here. The 1995-96 academic year marked the beginning of the new educational process for Yerevan State University. With the purpose of developing an educational system that would correspond to international standards, YSU, as well as a number of other Armenian higher education institutions, adopted the two-level system of education.

Since the mid-1990s, consistent work has been done to regulate the educational standards for the Bachelors and Masters degrees, as well as to improve the educational process. The University also provides a third education implemented within the framework of post-graduate training, and that is the three-year postgraduate education. The studies end with a post-graduate dissertation defence and the awarding of the degree of Candidate of Science. The University has 10 professional councils.

The Alma Mater has made a solid investment in the establishment of the Third Republic of Armenia after the proclamation of independence. The First and current presidents of the RA are YSU graduates. Three Prime Ministers and many ministers of the republic have also graduated from YSU at different times. Alma Mater graduates permanently make their contributions to the prosperity and development of our country.

Currently, about 19,000 students study in 19 faculties of YSU (including about 1700 students from the Ijevan Branch and 3000 part-time students). The Alma Mater professorial staff is comprised of 1.500 representatives: 214 are professors, 557 are associate professors, 427 are assistants and 480 are lecturers. The 23 academicians and 26 Corresponding Members of the National Academy of Sciences are involved in academic and fundamental and applied research processes at the university. Academic activities are organized by more than 100 Departments, which are equipped with modern facilities and equipment.

  • Yerevan State University provides high-quality education to ensure competitiveness of its graduates in the global labour market, as well as their integration into the European higher education area. To deal with the challenges and to effectively implement its educational mission, YSU continuously upgrades the content of its educational programmes by applying contemporary teaching and learning methods, and provides students with services that effectively support them.

The structural changes in the YSUs academic activities started in 1995-96 AY. This transition offered a two-level qualification system to award YSU graduates with the Bachelors and Masters degrees.

The ECTS credit system has been gradually introduced in YSU since 2007-08 AY as a result of joining Armenia to the Bologna Process in 2005. Currently, the ECTS credit system is used in 60 Bachelors and 130 Masters programmes, where more than 18,500 students (both in full-time and correspondent education modes, including students at the Ijevan Campus) are being trained. Currently, YSU has over 1,300 lecturers (of which 15% are professors and 35% are associate professors) involved in the teaching process, and 65% possess scientific degrees. The student-lecturer ratio is 12.

The four-year Bachelors Programme workload is 240 credits and consists of the following educational components: z General humanities and social-economic courses z General mathematical and natural science courses z General professional education courses z Special professional education courses z Other educational modules

The two-year Masters Programme workload is 120 credits and consists of 2 main parts - educational and research.

The educational part of the programme is as follows:z Bridge courses z General education coursesz Professional core coursesz Elective courses.

The research part of the programme is as follows:z Scientific seminar z Research work z Research practice z Pedagogical practice z Master thesis

The YSU student assessment system is a multi-factor one and intends to continuously assess the knowledge of students throughout the entire academic year. It has several objectives, such as introducing elements of formative assessment, fostering students individual work and class attendance.

YSU is a consortium member university in the Erasmus-Mundus External Co-operation Window student exchange programmes that provide its students with the opportunity to study at European universities and transfer their credits back to YSU as parts of their own study programme.

    EDUCATION

    7

  • 8YSU has numerous three-year Doctoral programmes, which recently have been reconstructed to introduce an educational component along with the research one. The programmes require defense of doctoral dissertation, after which the students received the degree of Candidate of Science. The University has 13 Doctoral degree-awarding Professional Councils.

Currently, YSU is establishing an internal quality assurance system in accordance with the requirements of the European Standards and Guidelines to improve essentially the quality of its educational provisions. The effective feedback from students and graduates is introduced to make sure that study and research programmes comply with the needs and requirements of the labour market and the society.

Since having a system of ongoing development of the lecturers is a crucial factor for providing high quality education, YSU recently upgraded this system as well. Development of the teaching staff is carried out in the form of professional trainings as well as providing them with special courses aimed at developing their teaching, learning and assessment skills.

YSU provides higher education and the professional community of Armenia with the extension programmes/courses, the aim of which is re-qualification and professional development in different fields.

The Department of Education and Methodology, the Department of Pre-university Education, the Department of Postgraduate Additional Education and the Department of Quality Assurance are involved in co-ordinating the academic and educational processes. The following are the contacts the heads of each Department:

The director of YSU Sarkis and Marie Izmirlian Library is Candidate of Physico-Mathematical Sciences, Associate Professor, Dr. Yeznik Mirzoyan,.

YSU library was founded on December 28, 1920, and the opening ceremony took place on November 8, 1922. The temporary director of the library was Academician Hakob Manandyan. In 1927, the library had 52 thousand books and there were 530 readers. Currently, the YSU academic library has more than 2 million books/units, 1.2 million of which are academic. The library has 85 employees.

On October 12, 1994, the new library building was opened within the framework of events dedicated to the 75th anniversary of the establishment of YSU. In 1995, an Armenian sponsor from Switzerland, Tigran Izmirlian donated 1 million USD to the YSU Library for the acquisition of modern technology and the modernization of service.

Library funds are usually replenished through subscription, book exchanges and commercial deals. Along with that, there are also auxiliary sources of replenishment, such as donations and financial aid. In regard to this, the Calouste Gulbenkian, Andrei Sakharov, Helen Takesyan and Karen Grigorian Foundations are of significant importance because they have helped the library obtain a large number of valuable books. These books are mainly in foreign languages (English, German, French, and Spanish). The Armenian Branch of the Open Society Institute and Foundation has also provided considerable assistance. The library also has several periodicals and journals (4530 units) that were published abroad, but are in Armenian. Those are Hairenik (Boston, 1922-1948), Droshak (Geneva, 1989-1980), Bazmavep, Armenian Church, Vem, Hayastani Kochnak, etc. Ancient manuscripts are also available at the YSU Library.

Today, the library has UN and OSCE material depositories, as well as a Greek Library Centre, German Corner and Russian Centre.

Exchange of experience and international co-operation is of great significance for the modernization and the development of the library. In regard to this, there are significant programmes implemented by Rostock University, Leibniz Hannover University and London Middlesex University. Since 2007, our Library has been an institutional member of the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) and the Association of European Research Libraries (LIBER).

By the decision of the YSU Academic Council in 2007, a number of structural changes were made for the improvement of the library management system, taking into consideration the experience of European universities. Currently, the library has six departments, including Circulation, Literature and Press, Computer Services and Automation, Acquisition and Processing, Depository, Antique, Rare and Art Literature. In 2007, the YSU Academic Council approved the Library Strategic Development Project.

The online order system and electronic catalogue functions in the Library provide the opportunity to make orders. Eight reading halls and two open shelf systems are part of the Library. The Library provides free WiFi Internet as well, as well as access to Springer DB and more than 200 Russian journals.

    STUDENT LIFE

Yerevan State University is considered as a leading higher education institution in Armenia with a unique student environment within the university. Due to the combination of high-quality education with unique student life atmosphere, the students personal and professional growth allows future graduates of the university to play a significant role in almost all spheres of public life and economic sectors of Armenia.

The University attaches special importance to students involvement in the discussion of various issues related to university activities, as well as their participation in the decision-making process. Students authonomy and active participation in university administration are one of the core values declared by YSU. The rectorate of YSU pays special attention to the development of students extracurricular activities at the university. Despite the traditions of students public activities, which were a big priority in the former Soviet system, the current trends and traditions of students extracurricular and public activities started to be formed in the mid-1990s following the establishment of the independent Republic of Armenia.

To promote the organized, systematic and consistent activities, several organizational units have been created during the last decades. These structures include student organizations (Student Council and Student Scientific Society), which are independent from the university administration, based on student voluntary participation and led by students, as well as administrative units (Student Affairs Division and Cultural Centre).

The field of student affairs has gradually developed during the last 5-6 years. Currently, the synthesis of activities of student organisations and corresponding administrative units of the university provides the effective balance of democratic student involvement and professional work. This approach provides students participation in university life, effective protection of students rights and representation of their interests on the one hand, and promotes students social, economic, public and cultural activities on the other hand. Several mechanisms and procedures are envisaged to provide students participation- according to Armenian legislation and the YSU statute, students make up 25% of all members of the universitys collegial governing bodies on both the university and faculty levels.

The offices of student organisations and administrative units are located on the 6th floor of the main building of the university.

    Student Affairs Division

The Student Affairs Division (Division on activities carried out with students) is the main university administrative unit responsible for providing smooth relations and co-operation between university student organisations and the university administrative and teaching staff. The division is responsible for co-ordinating the extracurricular activities with students, as well as collecting, analysing and presenting the university rectors office with students opinions, requests and feedback on various issues related to their study.

The Student Affairs Division promotes the development of student self-governance and carries out various activities on establishing regular contacts and relationship with Student Council. The Division initiates various student training courses, summer or winter schools and other educational events to promote active student participation in university life.
