AspartofaprocesstodeveloplandandresourcegovernancepolicyfortheYunesitin
CaretakerArea,anAppreciateInquiryworkshopwashostedonOctober10thand11
th,2012.
NinetonineteencommunitymembersattendedandparticipatedintheworkshopfacilitatedbyHerbHammondandJohnLernertodiscussthepositiveaspectsoftheYunesitinCaretakerArea
andYunesitincommunityaswellastodevelopalong-termvisionforecologicalstewardshipin
thearea.
DuringDay1oftheworkshop,anintroductiontotheprojectwasprovidedaswellasan
introductiontotheprinciplesofAppreciativeInquiry.Afterthispresentation,theparticipants
weredividedintototwogroupstodiscussandanswertheDiscoveryandDreamquestionsof
theAppreciateInquiryprocess.Thepurposeofthesequestionswastogeneratediscussion
regardingwhatisgoodabouttheCaretakerAreaandYunesitincommunityand,basedonthis,whatisapositivelong-termvisionfortheCaretakerArealandbaseandYunesitin
community.Participationwasbroadandactive,withparticipantsexpressingtheirideasin
wordsandpictures.Afterthevisioningsession,thegroupproducedalonglistofideasandtwo
detaileddrawingsofthefuturetheyenvisioned40yearshence.Theseideasandimagesevoke
agreatloveofthelandandoffamily,andalongingtorestorethelandtoitsformerstateprior
tocolonizationforthesakeofthehealthofpeople(forthisgenerationandfuturegenerations).
OnDay2averypositiveandsuccinctvisionstatementwasdistilledfromdiscussionsonDay1.
Thevisionexpressedhopeforhealingthroughtherestorationoftheforestsandwaterwaysand
throughculturaleducationandrenewedtraditionalactivitiesontheland.Italsocalledfor
greatercollectivecontrolandresponsibilityoftheCaretakerAreabyYunesitincommunity.
Bytheendoftheseconddaytheobjectivesofthelandandresourcegovernanceprojectwere
revisitedandfinetunedandaworkplanwasinitiatedforsomeoftheprojectobjectives.
AdditionalprojectworkplanningwasstillrequiredbutwastobesortedoutbyChiefRussand
HerbHammond.Notesfromtheworkshopweretobecirculatedtothecommunityonthe
YunesitinGovernmentFacebookpageandthevisionstatementwastobedevelopedintoa
posterandpostedaroundthecommunity.
ThepagesthatfollowprovidearecordofthematerialsandnotesformtheOctober10and11th
workshop.TheyincludetheoriginalposterfortheAppreciativeInquiryworkshop(calledthe
YunesitinSummit),abackgrounderfortheworkshop,theworkshopagenda,theworkshop

BACKGROUNDANDOBJECTIVES
Ourlandandcommunitiesareatacrossroads.Weareatthepointwherewecancontinueto
reacttoeverincreasinguseofourancestrallands:morelogging,moremining,moreroads,
morehuntingandmorefishing.Orwecanbegintodevelopandassertourvoiceforwhatwewanttosee.
Welivehere.Wehavelivedhereforthousandsofyears.Wearethereforeentitledtohavea
majorsayregardinghowourlandisusedandhowwewanttobenefitfromthatuse.
Itstimetogettogetheranddevelopaclearvisionforwhatwewantandtospeakwithone
voice.ThesummitthatweareplanningonOct10thisabeginningofthisprocess,wherewe
cancometogetherasacommunityandhearfromavarietyofdifferentperspectivesand
opinionsandbegintodescribewhatwewantourlandandcommunitytolooklikeforour
childrenandtheirchildrenandhowwewishtoshareourlandwithothers.
TheprocesswewilluseiscalledAppreciativeInquiryorAI,whichlooksforwhatisgoodin
communitiesandbuildsonthattocreateavisiontomakemoregoodstuffhappen.Onesimple
wayofthinkingaboutAIthenislookingforthegoodstuff.
Thevisionthatwecomeupwithforourlandandourcommunitywillinturnbeusedtoinform
alonger-termecosystem-basedlanduseplanningprocessthatwewillbelaunchinginthe
monthstocome.
PleasecometothemeetingonOct10thifyouareinterestedinbeinginvolvedin
developinganewvisionfortheYunesitincommunityandourtraditionalterritory
andintheecosystem-basedplanningprocess.
