This project is an exploration of ambiguity between figure and ground, solid and void, novelty and history, curiosity and recognition. Geometric extrusions are arranged into a palazzo-esque conglomeration, to create pockets and fields for innumerable activities as well as experiences of flickering perceptions.

Page 5: Yunzhi Ou: Work Sample

Styrofoam blocks are robotically wire cut to create a spectrum of forms with smooth surfaces, allowing a three-dimensional experience of novel curves and angles that resemble familiar elements while conveying indeterminacy.

architecture • housing • large scale • teamwork

Inspired by informal markets in Lagos, Nigeria, this housing project aims to bring the vibrant and versatile qualities to Los Angeles, where food trucks enliven the ground-level open market.

At unit scale, thresholds are devised to enable flexible spatial definition. Rooms can expand or enclose depending on usage at different times of the day.

architecture • housing • large scale • teamwork

At building scale, the mix-use parking lot at ground level is concurrently an outdoor food market on certain days of the week. Pedestrian medians at different widths, sun and shade, movable furniture, vegetation, traffic, and columns create a variegated environment.

Façades are also designed to correspond to activities below. Balconies face each other to surround gathering atmospheres, while corridor façades coincide with travel and movement.

Overall, this housing complex is a hub that teases boundaries and maximizes adaptibility.

architecture • mixed use • large scale

Locations of surrounding amenities are categorized, mapped, and connected in the manner of criss-crossing tartans, resulting in a hybrdized building on site, where program are likewise strips of overlapping volumes. This strategy gives both similar and dissimilar activities an opportunity to connect and create new possibilities.

If you choose to believe me, good. Now I will tell you about Detroit, the inside-out city. Homes of its past are deconstructed and distributed along the streets. You walk down one street and find teens climbing up a wall covered with door nobs. Down another, through the glass of 14 different sets of windows, you see a pair of father and son fixing an old bicycle.

A city that exhibits its own bathtubs, mirrors, and floor tiles, everything in Detroit exists as an object of the present with a shadow of another specific time. Things are of the public as well as the domestic. One sits in multiple realities as she sips hot chocolate in a couch on Riopelle Street.

2030

• Project expansion is encouraged at other facades, sidewalks, alleys, and open fields in the city.

• All projects shall be assigned one or more of the following categories: ‘find,’ ‘play,’ ‘work,’ and ‘rest.’

• ‘Find’ projects may exist singularly and must have a point of sales, whereas all other projects must be combined and/or clustered with at least one ‘find’ project.

CODES

• ‘Play’ and ‘work’ projects may be operated by City Recycling, or cooperated with businesses or individuals.

• If a project or a cluster of projects infills three consecutive city blocks, a ‘rest’ project must be included.

• Project activity must be relevant to immediately adjacent users of space.

• Spaces for user encountering, gathering, and lingering is

encouraged. • As a general rule of thumb, projects associated with larger

items are placed in larger sites, and vice versa. • Choices of material for each project must be limited to under six

types to create a monoculture. Similar projects (e.g. aquaponic parks) at different places may choose to repeat the same material types (e.g. bathtubs and pipes) or evaluate new

materials (e.g. refrigerators and ducts) according to function. • Material selection standards must be established and

implemented at each project. Selection criteria may include texture, shape, dimensions, etc.

• Existing loading dock openings may serve as hanging display and storage spaces for salvaged windows.

• Each window hanger system shall consist of two metal pipes suspended from the ceiling, and two hanger clips for each window.

• Each metal pipe must be positioned perpendicular to a wall that hosts a loading dock. Pipes must penetrate said loading dock and protrude 2’-0” beyond the wall exterior.

• Pipe height must be determined by the top elevation of loading docks.

• Each pipe must be supported (by suspension) every 12’-0” along its length.

• Windows may slide along pipes to create zones in the workshop space.

• Park components must be limited to bathtubs, sinks, pipes, and foam insulation boards.

• Bathtubs and sinks shall be used as tanks for anaerobic digestion of food waste from the Eastern Market, tanks for plants, or tanks for fish. Each must satisfy specific dimensional requirements for its function.

• Thinner pipes shall be used to direct liquid in the aquaponics system, while larger ones shall be bundled as seating.

• Pipe seating must be placed orthogonally to create pockets of aquaponics or park spaces.

• Foam boards shall be modified and serve as rafts for the aquaponics system.

• Similar aquaponic parks may be built using other limited sets of salvaged material.

• Ceiling, wall, and floor planks shall be stored and displayed in dispensers that also serve as open parking sheds.

• A row of dispenser must be installed at each of the six rows of parking at the center of the parking lot.

• Occupiable space must be at 7’-6” in height minimum. • Where two sheds meet back to back, they must be

connected to each other for structural balance. • Where a single shed is in place, a row of brick in

dispensers must be attached to the backside for structural balance.

• Similar plank dispensers may be added to other open air parking lots in the city. rows
