    transmitter to be black-owned

Jefferson-Pilot Communicia- lions Co. said it intends to sell the license for its WQXI-790 AM radio station lo Vincent Henry, the 27- year-old w n of Ragan Henry, who used to own black-oriented WAOK- AM in Atlanta.

The $1.65 million purchase of the 5,000-watt AM license and transmitter would give Atlanta its third black-owned radio station.

U the license transfer is a p proved by the federal government. Charlotte. N.C.-based Jefferson-Pi- lot would move its AM operations to a more powerful station at 640 on the AM dial. It would continue lo use its WQXI call letters at the new. 50,000-walt station.

This past spring. Jefferson-Pi- lot agreed to buy the 640-AM li- cense from Michael Hollis of Atlanta.

Hollis, a 33-year-dd black en- trepreneur, had obta~ned a permit to build a radio station under a government program intended to encourage mlnorlty ownership of media. lfollls was the founder of

ent Henry. He is buying icense for the 5,000-wan

    tion from Jefferson-Pilot

Air Atlanta, a now-defunct airline that is currently in bankruptcy.

Accord~ng to documents filed with the Federal Communications Commission, Hollis i s the sole owner of Phoenix City Broadcast- ing Limited of Atlanta. Since the spring. Phoenix has been building a three-tower. AM station on Simpson Road in norlhwest Atlan- ta, just southeast of Lincoln Cemetery.

As reported in early June. Jef- ferson-Pllot s~gned an agreement

DAVE WlNlVSLan with Hollis to buy that station for about $2 million. The deal would be completed as swn as the sta- tion was operating and fully li- censed by the FCC, probably by the end of thls year.

The original announcement that Jefferson-Pilot would buy Hollis' license drew criliciun from some black community leaders who were concerned about losing' the opportun~ty to be served by a m~nor~ty-owned company.

MICHAEL HOLLIS: Had permit to build a radio station

    under a government program.

Because Jefferson-Pilot was leaving its 790 AM spot, the com- pany had an opportunity to sell that frqucncy. Jerry Blum, presi- dent and general manager of WQXI, Thursday said hls company was "delighted to be able lo sell ib 790 licensc and transmitter to a black partnership headed by Vincent Henry, The ~ar lne rsh i~ is called Vinrah Radid L.P. and is based in Philadelphia. "I think everybody w i l l be

baoov about this." Blum said. ... Vincent ~ e n f ~ plans to use the

5,000-watt station to serve the needs of Atlanta's black communi- ty, according to his father. Ragan Henry.

"Minority ownership of radio stations is important because blacks listen more intensely to ra- dio." Ragan Henry said. "We don't depend as much on newspapers as we do on radio."

Ragan Henry said his family is happy to be able to buy the old WQXI station because "this way. you won't be losing an opporlunliy for minority owncrship."

In addition. Atlanta offcrs an excellent radio market, Henry said. "You just don't get too many chances to get into a market llke that." he said.

Henry, an attorney in Philadel- phia, bought WAOK in 1974. He sold i t about two years ago. Cur- rently, Henry owns WBUS-FM in Newnan, but has an agreemenl lo sell that station next month, he said.

WBUS was purchased in 1985 with the intention of reaching thc biack community on Atlanta's south side, about 35 miles north of Newnan.

"But we had some inlerfcrence nroblems we iusl colild not solve.

owned by Clark College; and WICO-AM, owned by Dorothy Brunson.

Dwight Ellis, vice president of the minority division of the Na- tional Assoelation of Broadcasters in Washington, said he was happy to see that WQXl was able to sell its old license to a black-owned company. Currently, only 2.1 per- cent of all the nation's 10.000 ra. dio stations are owned by minor- ities, he sald.

"The FCC set aslde l~renses for mlnorltics to help cnsure that the community in question would receive proper programming for their needs." he sad. "In addition. the industry needs m~norlty role models to help bulld up a plpellne of young people who know the broadcast buslness."

All of the l~cense transfers de- pend upon FCC approval.

WQXI-FM will not be affect- ed by- the changes at the AM station. I

watt AM statlon, KNOM, is a pnme source of news and entertainment for the 30.033 people lsoiated in northwest Aiaska, an area the slzc of California.

"People fly into Nome the first time, take a look around and say: 'Oh my God?" Poole. 64. a Jesuit priest, sald. "But, you know. the small-town environment grows on them. We've got 20 ex-volunteers who have stayed in Nome. Some wentoutslde [of Alaska] when they finished their assignments a t the station, and they just decided that wasn't for them."

True enough, Nome Isn't much to look at, with ]ust one paved street and 3,700 hardy souls buddied on the treeless tundra along the Be- ring Sea, 165 mlles from Siberia. Three roads lead out of town, and all end withln 90 mlles. The town's

"When I first flew In, I couldn't believe I could make it here for a year," said KNOM newsman Mike Jackoboice. 28, a Marquette Uni- versity journalism graduate who gets a monthly $60 stipend from the station. "But the place is ad- dict~ng. Drive five miles and you're in the domain of grizzlies and some of the best sports fishing in the world. To me. that's ideal-you've got the opportunity for stimulating work m an unl~kely environment. What can I say, except that I've been here three years now."

KNOM, owned by the Catholic blshop of Northern Alaska, began 11s broadcasts under Pmle's direc- tion in 1971, an event that brought congratulatory messages from President Rlchard M. Nixon. Bing Crosby and Bob Hope. Although there are numerous insp~ra t~onal spots, 11s daily 18-hour format9

For them, the folksy public service messages on KNOM provide a critical link to the outside world: The station announces the departure of every "bush" flight in Nome, lnforms fishermen a t sea when their wives give birth or there is a death in the family, gives loeal weather reports that are a matter of Me and death in this part of t h e world and relays messages that, for example, eay a package has been mailed to a particular family, thus dictating a 50-mile trip t o the nearest post office.

    1t has been a very long tirre s ince I ( o r rather my words) appeared in Musings. I thought 1'd take advantage of a good t h e (occupations) (Thanks t o Je r ry S t a r r -pls) t o re - in t rduce myself t o the club. working i n a new c i t y , I am rapidly approaching 23 years of age, a recent graduate of Susquehanna university i n Selirsgrove, PA. Here i n Louisvie, I work for Actors Theatre of Louisville, one of the f i n e s t regional theatres i n the country. I'm a scenic carpenter, which rreans I a s s i s t with building a l l the scenery and properties used in the shms. I find working in thea t re very invigorating and stirrmating, each s h m very d i f fe ren t fron the las t . The work a t times can be hectic , seven- or eight-day weks ; fourteen-hour days a r e not unccmron. I spent the s m in Western North Carolina working i n Theatrethere. Asheville is a c i t y d d n a t e d by one s ta t ion (an EM, "99.9 Kiss FM", despite the muntains) . Louisville, too, is daninated by one s ta t ion , a t l e a s t i n AM drive. That of course is WHAS-840, with the Wayne Perky Morning Shm. A recent a r t i c l e i n the Louisville paper sa id t h a t WHAS gets 25 t o 35% of the mrning audiene . Very inpressive n k r s for an AM stat ion. I have s ta r ted t o scan the d i a l s , here, a f t e r a long p e r i d of inac t iv i ty (due t o college l i f e , m s t l y ) . 1 ' m l is tening t o one s ta t ion per day when I ge t the ths, in order t o learn the market. me note of in te res t so f a r ; WUCY-790 is sounding fu l ly automated now, with stat-ts l ike "The New Wacky Country, AM-790". It sounds l ike a t rans i t ion fonmt , with s m t h i n g "different" o r "new" t o f o l l m . I'll keep everyone p s t e d . Oh, yes, one thing tha t ' s nice about working in theatre: Mondays a r e usually days of f , so I h o p to get back i n t o Monday m m i n g ~ ~ ' i n g . Dougas E. Orf - 141 Steele Ave., #112 - Painesville, OH 44077 H i , gang. I t has been a year o r so ago since I l a s t Mused. The big events

    s ince then have bssm the 920 Kingston, NY t e s t and the -1560 iberty, KY t e s t . In both cases, very nice l e t t e r s w r e received. One of the big observations in the past year is watching 1200 turn £ran a nice c lear channel t o what ap-s t o be a "graveyard" a t night. It used t o be t h a t WJAI was the only one there, but nm, on a typical night, I f ind WKOX, DW, and W weaving in and out of each other.

    About three mnths ago I purchased second-hand £ran a fr iend a McI(ay-Qmzk AN-5 tuner. I t r i e d it out an my Dyrcek antenna and it worked nicely. N m I have t o put a hole i n tbe wall (with the landlord's permission, of course) so I can run two things £ran one ant-.

Are there any "old timers" £ran the Cleveland area t h a t might r&r WJAY £ran tbe 1920's and '30's? They apparently carr ied such programs a s "Pie Plant Pete" and the Vaughn DeLeath Shm. m e of my supervisors who is approaching 70 years old has asked rre i f I have any knmledge of this stat ion. I told him I would ask for help i n the NRC. So much for a l l this.

    Now we w i l l m v e t o the theme. I work i n our m i c i p a l E lec t r ic P- plant here i n Painesville. In 1988 w w i l l celebrate our 100th birthday and a s f a r a s w can determine w are the oldest continuously operating steamdriven municipal power plant i n the united States. My job r i g h t n m even a s I wr i te t h i s is t o sit i n t h i s cubical for n* f i v e boiler 'and try t o keep it operating r igh t . For anyone familiar with boilers , w carry on peak load about 165,000 p u n d s per hour a t 1240 PSI and 900 degrees F. t v r a t u r e on t+us boiler.

    Steam £ran t h i s boiler goes through a pressure-reducing valve and is reduced down t o 850 PSI t o run tddxr Five turbine, a 16,500 kW unit . Other older e q u i p n t consists of two older stoker boilers and tw mller turbines. We aso have a 25,000 kW turbine, but it is t o be replaced w i t h a mller, mre e f f i c i e n t un i t .

    In closing, there is one ccmron problem for both my work and my hobby; t h a t is thunders tom. We a l l knm what they do t o AM radio reception. I can reca l l a 3-11 s h i f t l a s t s m r during which a b o l t h i t somwhere near t h e plant. ~t stopped several of the large notors including both pulverizers and the forced d r a f t fan. W i t h t h a t the boiler shut d m . 73's and best of DX t o everyone f o r t h i s new season.
