Scientists have now de-coded the biochemical mech-anism that lies behind the protective effect of some lac-tic acid bacteria, which play a role in alleviating inflam-mation and thus protecting against intestinal diseases.

In experiments with mice, the researchers suc-ceeded in demonstrating that lactocepin - an enzyme pro-duced by certain lactic acid bacteria - selectively degrades inflammatory mediators in diseased tissue.

This new evidence might lead to new approaches for the treatment of inflamma-tory bowel diseases.

Yoghurt has been valued

for centuries for its health-promoting effects.

These effects are thought to be mediated by the lactic

acid bacteria typically con-tained in yoghurt.

Evidence from recent scientific studies show that

some bacterial strains actual-ly have a probiotic effect and can thus prevent disease.

A team of biologists and nutrition scientists working with Prof. Dirk Haller from the Technische Universitaet Muenchen (TUM) has now discovered the mechanisms at work behind this protec-tive effect.

In experiments with mice, the scientists observed that lactocepin - an enzyme produced from the lactic acid bacterium Lactobacil-lus paracasei - can selective-ly interrupt inflammatory processes.

As the scientists ob-served, lactocepin degrades

messengers from the im-mune system, known as chemokines, in the diseased tissue. As a part of the “nor-mal” immune response, chemokines are needed to guide defense cells to the source of the infection.

In chronic intestinal disorders like Crohn’s dis-ease and ulcerative colitis, the otherwise highly effective defense mechanism against infectious agents is malfunc-tioning.

Chemokines such as “IP-10” then contribute to the tis-sue damage due to chronic inflammatory processes, preventing the tissue from healing.

Nothing satisfies your thirst than a tall glass of water. So before you reach for that can of chilled beer, here are some facts you should know about hydrating yourself. The amount of fluids you need depends on your age, gender and level of physical activity. Remem-ber that you will need even more fluids to stay hydrated in hot weather and when you are physi-cally active. You will know that you are dehy-drated when you spot one or more of these instances happening: 1. You start feeling thirsty 2. Your lips and mouth dry out 3. You have a dizzying headache 4. You feel faint 5. Your urine is thick and yellow 6. Your BP falls and heart rate in-creases However, those who insist that it is important to drink eight glasses of water each day might be wrong. Research shows that drinking less than eight glasses of water per day does not lead to negative health effects. The amount of water that a person needs to drink every day

is different for everyone. What is most important is that you drink enough fluids to avoid dehydra-

tion. Your fluid intake can include water as well as a variety of other fluids.

Despite the fact that none of the partici-pants showed any symptoms of heart dis-ease, 43 per cent of the total had CAC, the Journal of Internal Medicine reports.

The study also found that people who lived in city centres were 80 per cent more likely to develop CAC than those living in other areas and that males, older par-ticipants, diabetics and smokers also faced higher risks, according to a Svendborg state-ment.

“Our study aimed to evaluate the asso-ciation between living in a city centre, which is often used by researchers to indicate ex-posure to air pollution, and the presence of coronary artery calcification in men and women showing no other symptoms of heart disease,” explains Lambrechtsen.

The participants were selected at ran-dom from a national government database of Danish adults, and 69 per cent agreed to take part and attend one of four regional hospitals in Southern Denmark.

Three percent were excluded from the study because of previous heart problems, leaving 1,225 people who did not display any symptoms of heart disease. Of these, 47 per

cent were male and 53 per cent were fe-male and they were equally split be-tween the 50 year-old and 60 year-old age groups.

Key findings included: CAC was more common in people living in city centres, rather than urban or rural ar-eas - in men (69 per cent vs 56 per cent), women (42 per cent vs 30 per cent ), 50 year-olds (48 per cent vs 32 per cent) and 60 year-olds (61 per cent vs 53 per cent).

Eggs may be even bet-ter for us than previously thought - with twice as many antioxidant proper-ties as an apple, a new re-search has found.

While eggs are well known to be an excellent source of proteins, lipids, vitamins and minerals, re-searchers at the University of Alberta recently discov-ered they also contain an-tioxidant properties, which helps in the prevention of cardiovascular disease and cancer.

Jianping Wu, Andreas Schieber and graduate stu-dents Chamila Nimalarat-ne and Daise Lopes-Lutz of the U of A Department of Agricultural Food and Nu-tritional Science examined

egg yolks produced by hens fed typical diets of either primarily wheat or corn.

They found the yolks contained two amino acids, tryptophan and tyrosine, which have high antioxi-dant properties.

After analyzing the properties, the research-ers determined that two egg yolks in their raw state have almost twice as many antioxidant properties as an apple and about the same as half a serving (25

grams) of cranberries.However, when the

eggs were fried or boiled, antioxidant properties were reduced by about half, and a little more than half if the eggs were cooked in a microwave.

“It’s a big reduction but it still leaves eggs equal to apples in their antioxi-dant value,” said.

The discovery of these two amino acids, while important, may only sig-nify the beginning of find-ing antioxidant properties in egg yolks, said Wu, an associate professor of ag-ricultural, food and nutri-tional science.

The study was pub-lished in the peer-reviewed journal Food Chemistry.

Higher maternal age predicst kids’ autism riskResearchers have shed light on

the possible links between maternal age and autism.

While much research has been done to iden-tify potential genetic causes of autism, the new study led by Sven Sandin, of the Karolinska In-stitutet, Sweden and King’s College London, suggests that non-heritable and environmental factors may also play a role in children’s risk for autism.

The researchers compared the risk of autism in different groups of material age (under 20, 24-29, 30-34, and 35+).

They found that children of mothers older than 35 years had 30 percent increased risk for autism. Children of mothers under 20 had the lowest risk of developing autism.

The association between advancing mater-nal age and risk for autism was stronger for male offspring and children diagnosed in more recent years.

The analysis included 25,687 cases of autism spectrum disorder and over 8.6 million control subjects, drawn from the 16 epidemiological pa-

pers that fit inclusion criteria for the study as de-

fined by the investigators. The researchers identified and discussed

several potential underlying causes of the asso-ciation between maternal age and risk for autism such as increased occurrence of gene alteration

during the aging process and the effects of expo-sure to environmental toxins over time.

“The study makes us confident there is an increased risk for autism associated with older maternal age, even though we do not know what the mecha-nism is. It has been ob-served in high quality studies from different countries, including the US,” Sandin said.

“All studies con-trolled for paternal age which is an indepen-dent risk factor for au-tism. This finding adds to the understanding that older age of the parents could have con-

sequences to the health of their children,” Sandin added.

The study has been published in the Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adoles-cent Psychiatry.

Vit d supplements can reduce BpVitamin D supplements could be as effective as some of the prescribed pill, when it comes to

lowering blood pressure in patients diagnosed with hypertension, re-

searchers say. Vitamin D deficiency has been associ-

ated with high blood pressure, but until now there has been little scientific evidence that topping up levels of the vitamin in the blood makes a difference.

A new study, presented at the European Society of Hypertension (ESH) meeting in London, sheds light on direct benefits from taking supplements for five months in win-

ter. Sun exposure tops up natural levels

more effectively than through diet, but northern European countries such as the UK only get sufficient levels of UV light for seven months a year.

Nearly 90 per cent of the body’s supply of vitamin D comes from the action of sun-light on the skin.

Researchers examined patients visit-

ing the Holstebro Hospital in Denmark, which is at the 56th Northern latitude - about the same latitude as Glasgow and Moscow).

Altogether 112 patients taking part had their initial levels of vitamin D mea-sured, and then they were given either Vitamin D or a placebo (dummy pill) for 20 weeks. 92 of the 112 pa-tients were found to have low levels of vitamin D at the start of the study, the Daily Mail reported.

The researchers dis-covered that those patients

taking the vitamin D supplement of 75 mcg (correct) daily showed a considerable re-duction in central systolic blood pressure, blood pressure measured near the heart.

When compared to the placebo group, patients taking vitamin D had a lowered in systolic blood pressure of 6.8 mmHg, while diastolic blood pressure was reduced by 1.7mmHg.

“Probably the majority of Europeans

have vitamin D deficiency, and many of these will also have high blood pressure,” study leader Dr Thomas Larsen said.

“What our results suggest is that hy-pertensive patients can benefit from vita-min D supplementation if they have vita-min D insufficiency.

“Vitamin D would not be a cure for hypertension in these patients, but it may help, especially in the winter months.

However, it is important to stress, that this was a small study, and that larger studies are needed to provide solid evi-dence.”

ESH Vice-President, Professor Anna Dominiczak of Glasgow University, said that till now, “there has been little evi-dence of benefit from vitamin D to patents with hypertension.”

“The reduction in systolic blood pres-sure was quite significant - this is what powerful drugs do in trials.

“This is an initial study, so it needs to be confirmed, but it is potentially in-teresting as part of an overall strategy for managing hypertension in patients with low levels of vitamin D,” Prof Dominiczak added.

exercise cuts dementia risk in seniors

The study found that regular resistance training, such as using a rowing ma-chine or weights, can also improve attention, memory

and problem solving, the Daily Express reported.

Eighty-six women, aged 70 to 80 with mild cognitive impairment were followed for six months. Brain scans after aerobic and resistance exercise were taken.

Teresa Liu-Ambrose,

from the University of Brit-ish Columbia, said brain function had improved. The results are in the Archives of Internal Medicine.

City dwellers face double heart disease riskPeople residing in city centres are almost twice as likely to suffer from coronary artery calcification (CAC), which can lead to heart disease, than those who live in less polluted

urban or rural areas, according to a study.

Shedding the kilos involves develop-ing a healthy eat-ing regime. Here

are tips on getting that right...

Don’t miss meals Have at least three

meals or then four smaller ones at a certain time every-day. These should contain enough cereal, protein and vegetable and fruit. If you skip a meal not only do you lower the body’s metabolic rate but also tend over eat in the next one, which is harm-ful, state diet experts.

Go for balance It’s wise to choose a

combination of vegetables, protein, grains, minerals, fruit as well as fish, which is high in omega 3 fats that help prevent heart disease. High fibre foods like beans and whole grains are fill-ing and low in calories. It’s also recommended to have enough Vitamin C in the form of oranges or a lemon, everyday.

Don’t overload... It’s said ‘we eat with

our eyes’ therefore don’t pile food onto the plate. Experts stress that an easy start to eating right is to practice portion control. Us-ing a smaller dinner plate is smart and won’t make you feel guilty. Just don’t over-load it, though.

Have more whole grains

Doing away with re-fined grains is most impor-

tant when it comes to eating right and slimming down. The best sources of this are oatmeal, whole-wheat flour, bulgur (cracked wheat) and brown rice. Whole grains are said to have lower calo-ries and they enhance one’s fiber intake, which can in turn reduce blood choles-terol levels, lower your risk of cardiovascular diseases and chances of developing obesity.

Snack smarter The next time you’re

pondering over what to have from a vending machine, do the right thing: walk away. Research points that snack-ing on chips or chocolates can hinder a diet like no other. Nutritionists advise having a healthy bite like a carrot stick or some dry fruit when you feel the munchies. A fruit is also a good option.

Arsenal will test Manchester United’s resolve to keep Wayne Rooney in this January’s transfer window, with their spending ready to continue following their record £42million deal for Mesut Ozil.Arsenal still have funds to make a bid of about £30m and the feeling at the club is that the signing of Ozil has in-dicated to Rooney, who scored on his surprise return from in-jury in Manchester United’s 2-0 win over Crystal Palace, that they have returned to being se-rious title contenders.

Ozil inspired Arsenal to a 3-1 win at Sunderland on Saturday, but they want to add a striker in January if possible and Rooney and Luis Suarez remain the two players that Wenger would like to add to the team. The club

believe that Rooney will consider their bid seriously, even though he seemed to prefer to move to Chelsea in the summer, because they have now signed Germany playmaker Ozil.Neither Suarez nor Rooney will be easy to prise away, with United having proved resolute in their determination to keep Rooney, rejecting bids

from both Arsenal and Chelsea and Liverpool proving equally in-transigent over Suarez, rejecting a bid of £40million, plus £1, from Arsenal.United are preparing to offer Rooney a new contract as his current deal runs out in 18 months, but have indicated that they will wait until January before opening talks. United need to

sign him on a longer-term deal before his market value dramati-cally decreases in the final year of his contract.Real Madrid are now expected to bid for Suarez in Jan-uary and it is clear that Liverpool would prefer to sell him abroad and that the player would prefer a move to the Bernabeu.

Rooney started Saturday’s game after his training-ground accident with Phil Jones that gashed his head, but his situation will continue to attract attention, especially with the launch of Sir Alex Ferguson’s autobiography next month. Rooney still strongly contends Sir Alex’s version of events at the end of last season, the former Manchester United manager claiming that Rooney asked to leave the club. United have confirmed that Rooney never submitted a formal trans-fer request.

West Indies A were struggling on 177 for seven in 30 overs in reply to India A’s 312/4 in rain-hit 42-overs-a-side one-day match at M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore.

Narsingh Deonarine top scored with 57 off 63 balls before becoming Rahul Sharma’s first wicket of the match.

The best partnership for West Indies A came between Deonarine (26) and An-dre Fletcher (29), who were involved in a 54-run stand off 53 balls before the latter fell to Yusuf Pathan in the 20th over.

Vinay Kumar gave India their first wicket in his first over by removing N Krumah Bonner (16) and then got rid of skipper Kieran Powell (17) in his third after the West Indies side had fiery start. Soon after, pacer Sumit Narwal bagged his first wicket to leave West Indies A struggling at 58 for three in 10.5 overs.

Earlier, skipper Yuvraj Singh hit 123

off 89 deliveries while Yusuf Pathan scored a quick-fire 70 not out off 32 balls with four fours and six maximums to pro-pel hosts to a mammoth total. The pair was involved in 125-run stand off just 55 balls for the fourth wicket.

Yuvraj, who scored 18th century in List A cricket, hit eight fours and seven sixes before falling to right-arm spinner Nkrumah Bonner in 40th over.

The 31-year-old left-hander was though circumspect in the beginning as he took 39 balls to hit his first boundary and scored his fifty in 60 balls. But, in the next 20 balls he raced to his century as a torrent of fours and sixes followed from his blade as the visiting bowlers had no clue how to contain him.

This was his first century in 2013 after 29 innnings in any format. His last hun-dred came for Punjab against Madhya Pradesh in Gwalior in December 2012 when he scored 131 - stats via Mohandas Menon.

Mandeep Singh, who came in at number three, scored 67 off 78 balls be-fore being bowled by left-arm spinner Nikita Miller on the first ball of 31st over. Mandeep’s knock was laced with seven fours and one six as he and Yuvraj were involved in a 100-run stand for the third

wicket.Indian openers started on a poor

note losing Unmukt Chand (1) in the third over of the match before Robin Uthappa departed in the 12th over after scoring 23 off 37 balls with the help of two fours.

Sreesanth was banned for life by the BCCI after being found guilty of spot-fixing in the IPL in an internal inquiry conducted by the Board’s Anti-Corruption and Security Unit chief Ravi Sawani.

Calling the life ban imposed on S Sreesanth “bizarre”, his lawyer Rebecca John said the tainted pacer will challenge the BCCI’s decision in court as it is “completely against the prin-ciples of natural justice”.

Sreesanth was banned for life by the BCCI after being found guilty of spot-fixing in the IPL in an internal inquiry conducted by the Board’s Anti-Corruption and Security Unit chief Ravi Sawani.

“The (BCCI) order is com-pletely against the principles of natural justice,” John told ‘ESPNcricinfo’.“It has based its findings on personal interac-tions with members of Delhi Police as well as taken material from the chargesheet that has

been filed by the police be-fore a sessions court.

“If that is so then they should have waited for the court to determine whether or not any of this holds up in legal proceedings,” she pointed out.

John described the Sawani report as “loose” and questioned the basis of its findings.“They just picked up conversations they had with members of Delhi Police where they said Sreesanth and other members of the cricketing community con-fessed before them. It is a very, very loose report with little or no substance in it,” John said.

She asked how the evidence which wasn’t enough to keep the accused players in jail, could be considered proof of their guilt by the BCCI. Sreesanth, along with four other cricket-ers, is currently out on bail after spending quite a few days in jail.

“The fact is that the sessions court has released players on bail and said none of this adds

up as a case. (The court said) it is very, very tenuous - the link be-tween whatever bookie you are saying had a role to play and the players, particularly Sreesanth, and granted him bail,” she said.

“And then this BCCI’s one-man committee says that Sreesanth is guilty of spot-fixing and hands over a life sentence to him. Not only is it is excessive, it is completely contrary to all principles of natural justice,” she reasoned.

The Portugal star has finally put pen to paper on fresh terms at Estadio San-tiago Bernabeu, ending any lin-gering doubts as to his future at the club following months of speculation over the talks.

Los Blancos have not yet disclosed any details of the contract, although reports in the Spanish media suggest the 28-year-old will become Spain’s highest-paid player with a net salary of 17 euros million per year, earning more than Lionel Messi and new teammate and record signing Gareth Bale.

It was revealed on Saturday that Ronaldo was ready to sign a new five-year deal with Ma-drid, with club president Flo-rentino Perez eager to keep his promise making the Portugal captain the highest-paid player in world football.

Ronaldo is thought to be set to earn 50 percent more per year than Bale, who eclipsed the forward’s world-record trans-fer fee after his reported 100 million euro

move from Tottenham at the end of the summer.

The news brings to an end a full year of speculation over Ronaldo’s commit-

ment to the Madrid cause, beginning with the revelations that he felt “sad” in the Spanish capital last autumn over a perceived lack of support from the club’s

hierarchy.Former side Manchester United was

linked with a sensational move to bring the 2008 Ballon d’Or winner back to Old

Trafford earlier this sum-mer, four years after he was sold for a then-record fee of 94 million euros.

But Ronaldo, who has 203 goals in as many games for Madrid, has always maintained a de-sire to stay at the club following Carlo Ance-lotti’s appointment, with the Italian coach himself underlining his belief that the deal would go through.

“Ronaldo wants to re-new his contract and the club want him to renew. I don’t think it will be a problem,” Ancelotti said last month.

A press conference to confirm the news has been scheduled for Sunday, with Perez set to lead the proceedings at the Bernabeu.

Former England star David Beckham has reportedly been voted as the world’s best footballer by a poll of UK fans. The former Manchester United and Real Madrid player topped a star-studded list, which includes the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, Gary Lineker, Pele, Zin-edine Zidane and Steven Gerrard, after capturing 29% of the votes.

According to the Daily Star, Portuguese star Ronaldo came second on the list with 14 percent votes, beating Argentine Messi, who came in third with twelve percent votes while Lineker was fourth in the poll, which was car-ried out by football toy firm Soccer Suckers.

Meanwhile, late Northern Irish footballer George Best came in fifth in the list, followed by Brazilian legend Pele in the sixth position, England captain Steven Gerrard in the seventh and former England footballer Alan Shearer in the eight position.

The report further said that Manchester United star Wayne Rooney occupied a low ninth position in the list, followed by former French star Zidane in the tenth posi-tion.

Pakistan captain Misbah-ul Haq said Sunday he hoped In-dia’s decision to allow local team Faisalabad to play on Indian soil will open up more cricket op-portunities between the two nations.

Misbah will lead Pakistan’s domestic Twenty20 champi-ons Faisalabad in the qualify-ing rounds of the Champions League starting in the Indian town of Mohali on Tuesday after New Delhi cleared the tour.

India had stalled all bilateral cricket with Pakistan in the wake of 2008 terrorist attacks in Mum-bai and -- with the exception of a short tour by Pakistan late last year -- there have been no signs of full series revival amid height-ened tensions between the two countries.

But Misbah said matches be-

tween the two cricket-obsessed nations should not be halted by politics.

“I feel cricket must go on,” Misbah told AFP on phone from Harare, Zimbabwe. “Giving a Pakistani team clearance is a positive sign and I hope this will help open more doors for Indo-Pak cricket.”

Pakistan humiliatingly lost the second Test in Harare on Saturday to level the two-match

series at 1-1. Misbah will join the rest of the Faisalabad squad in India later Sunday.

Despite the tensions be-tween India and Pakistan, Mis-bah said people on both sides of the border enjoy cricket.

“It is a fact that people of both the countries enjoy Indo-Pak cricket and it is necessary for both the countries to have regu-lar exchange of cricket tours be-cause it minimises tensions and brings people together,” said Misbah.

Misbah denied players would be scared by recent ten-sions, sparked by a string of recent clashes in the disputed Kashmir region.“When we play cricket, people forget every-thing,” he said. “We never expect and never fear any aggression. I am going to India with an open mind, with a message of friend-ship and peace, as always.”

Gareth Bale scores on debut, but Real Madrid held to a draw

World record signing, Ga-reth Bale scored on his Real Madrid debut but could not stop his side from dropping two points on their visit to Vil-larreal.

Madrid were held to a 2-2 draw.

Bale may have been the centre of attention before the game kicked off Saturday, but it was Madrid goalkeeper Di-ego Lopez who was his side’s saviour in the first half with a series of spectacular saves to keep Madrid in the match, re-ports Xinhua.

Lopez had already made three fine stops before Cani put Villarreal ahead with a low shot after 20 minutes and produced another fine double stop before Madrid began to show signs of life.

Bale scored the debut goal that Madrid fans will have been dreaming about six min-utes before the break, showing strength to get past his marker

to prod home Javier Carvajal’s low cross from the edge of the penalty area.

But if Madrid went in level at the break it was thanks to Lopez who was returning to haunt his former club.

The second half kicked off with Bale lashing a shot over the Villarreal bar be-fore Jaume Costa let Madrid off the hook by sidefooting wide of an open goal.

Villarreal may have just re-turned to the top flight from the Spanish second division, but they were looking the bet-ter side against a Madrid side that lacked cohesion in both midfield and defence.

Against the run of play Cris-tiano Ronaldo put Real Madrid ahead. The Portuguese striker saw his shot strike a defender before rebounding over the helpless Sergio Asenjo in to the

Villarreal goal.Villarreal were soon level.

Lopez made another fine save, but could only direct the ball to Giovani Dos Santos, who scored with an angled shot into the far corner with 20 min-utes remaining.

There were chances at either end in the closing min-utes, but although they had to cling on grimly in the closing minutes, perhaps Villarreal will be more disappointed with the draw.

Jos Buttler added to his burgeoning reputation as the man to close out an innings by ensuring that the NatWest series went to the deciding match, as he guided England to a tense three-wicket victory with three balls to spare in Cardiff. On a surface where free-scoring was a rarity England struggled in their chase of 228, dented early on by Clint McKay’s hat-trick, but just when the requirement was getting out of hand Buttler and Ben Stokes produced a strong argument as to why they have packed the batting order.

Buttler had earlier been given out lbw on 8 but was saved by the DRS when it showed the ball slid-ing down the leg side. When the seventh-wicket pair joined forces England still needed 84 off 68 balls but overs 39 to 43 brought 40 runs as the equation start-ed to favour the home side. Buttler eased the tension further by drilling James Faulkner into the River Taff and then brought up his half-century from 41 balls.

However, when Stokes was bowled by McKay the job was not quite done for England, especially as

James Tredwell struggled to get the ball away. But-tler scrambled a single to take the strike for the final over (a direct hit would have found him short) then settled the contest in a grand manner with a huge six over midwicket off Mitchell Johnson, followed, two

balls later, by a fierce straight drive.Although Buttler has shown his class on the in-

ternational stage before, this is the first time he has completed a run chase for England in his brief career, so it was an important tick for the coach, Ashley Giles.

Stokes, while not as convincing, more than played his role in supporting Buttler as he continued in the No. 8 role earmarked for him since the match against Ireland. However, there were a couple of crucial mo-ments Australia will look back on. When Stokes had 2, Aaron Finch could not hold into a tough chance at third man when he upper cut Johnson then, on 9, he was given not out to a huge appeal for a gloved hook which Hot Spot showed had made contact. Australia had burned their review much earlier against Eoin Morgan, when he was nowhere near edging it. Next ball, Stokes clipped Johnson for a boundary.

After less than three overs of the chase, England had an uphill task to level the series, despite Australia being held to 227. McKay, a key member of Austra-lia’s one-day bowling unit but someone who doesn’t always get the acclaim, took the fifth hat-trick by an Australian in ODIs and the 33rd overall.
