It’s hard to believe that our magazine is already in its third year. Yet here it is! We salute all the members of both the present and the past who have helped to shape the future of our Club. Julia Pace Co-Editor in Chief Style Director We are so glad to finally be publishing another issue of zeb! Even more wonderful is that Juventus is ahead in the standings. My professor (an Arsenal fan!) always asks me how Juve is doing, and its feels to good to tell him we're number one. I was recently back in Canada for Thanksgiv-ing, and it was great to be able to watch soccer again with my family. It brought back memories of waking up on Sunday morning to gather around the television and watch Juventus play. Soccer is certainly more than just entertain-ment and sport-- it's a ritual that brings people together. I'm wishing you all a wonderful holiday season with your fami-lies. And, of course, with Juventus. Forza Juve!

LOOKING FORWARD It is time once again for the Club’s Annual General Meeting. It is important that all members attend as this is the time where we review what we have accom-plished in the past year and what we have planned for the year to come. The Board of Directors three year term has come to an end and the Club will be looking for nominations from among its members to create a new Board to go forward for the next three years. In 2012 the Juven-tus Club DOC To-ronto will celebrate its Ten Year Anni-versary! Yes, it’s true! Our Club has been around for 10 years, the longest of any incarnation of a Juventus Club in Canada. This is something that all our members should be proud of! Congratulations everyone!

NEW HORIZONS Regrettably, the Juventus Club DOC Toronto announces the resignation of Board Member Vince Carlucci as Club Treas-urer. Our loyal friend, like many, has found that grandparenting is a full-time job and we wish him many wonderful times to-gether with his grandchildren.

The Juventus Club DOC Toronto lost a beloved member of its family. A true gentleman and a loyal member of our Club,
we treasure the memories we have of this gentle soul and forever hold him in our hearts.
GINO VENTRESCA, born in Torre dei Nolfi (Aquila) Italy on October 6, 1925, passed away on August 25, 2011 at Humber River Regional Hos-pital. He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years Giovanna. Immigrating to Canada in 1949 he quickly estab-lished himself as a leader in the Italo- Canadian community. His passion for life was reflected in his business, as founder of Ventresca Travel Agency, where he pioneered group travel to Mexico and became affectionately known as “Mr. Aca-pulco.” He co-founded and was President of Alba Tours for many years, where his proudest accom-plishment was being instrumental in bringing the first flight from Toronto to Pescara, his beloved region of
Abruzzo. As founder and President of the Associazione Conca di Sulmona, he proudly maintained the culture and traditions of his Abruzzese roots. His love for the game of soccer manifested itself in the early 1960s and again in the early 1970s when he was president of the Toronto Italia Soccer Club, where winning and do-ing so with class was a reflection of how he conducted himself in his everyday life. A life long fan of Ju-ventus, Gino anxiously awaited every Sunday to watch Juventus play. He was also one of the found-ing members of what is now the Ju-ventus Club DOC Toronto and even served as the Club’s Honorary Pre-sent for many years. His love and respect for family and friends will always remain in the hearts of those who had the privi-lege of knowing him.

Who would have thought that just under ten years ago, when the founding members of this Club sat together and planted the seed that would eventually grow into the Ju-ventus Club DOC Toronto, that this Club would continue to endure so many years later. Our Club is the longest incarnation ever of any Ju-ventus Club in Toronto. That is so exciting on so many levels, not the
least of which is the knowledge that the passion and support of all our members throughout the years has manifested itself in the recognition that we juventini can endure. Our anniversary will afford us the oppor-tunity to celebrate our spirit, our style, and that special “something” that makes us juventini unique. The soccer season is starting once again which means that it is
also time for membership r e n e w a l s . Remember , the Club is here for you, so feel free to speak to one of the Board Members re-
garding ini-t i a t i v e s you’d like to see or par-ticipate in. Your feed-back is al-ways appre-ciated. The Juventus Club DOC Toronto celebrated its Second Annual Evening of Wine Tasting. The event was once again hosted by Coppi Ristorante which provided attendees with an evening full of delectable food and exquisite wines,
amid an elegant ambiance. It’s no wonder that this event is a member favourite!

The Juventus Club DOC Toronto hosted another one of its Annual summer picnics. The event, held at Doctors Maclean Park in Woodbridge, brought members young
and….older out to have some fun in the sunshine and munch on some wonderful food. If you weren’t there, you missed out!
Faces were all smiling and sun-kissed the weekend of our An-nual Picnic. It may have been the porchetta, or it could have been the Trivia Contest, the old friends we talked to or the new friends we made. Whatever the reason, everyone had fun and we can’t wait to do it again next year!

September 8, 2011 marked the inauguration of Juventus’ ground-breaking new stadium, an evening punctuated by the passionate and emotional words of club president Andrea Agnelli as he addressed the crowd. All seats were full on this his-toric night as fans gathered to celebrate not only the opening of the stadium but the great spirit that unites them as well. The first stadium of its kind in Italy, privately owned by a club, seats 41,000 people. The hope is that the new home ground will revolutionize the match-day experience for the fans and encourage them to come out to support their team in greater numbers.
The spectacular night began with a 114 second countdown, each second denoting the number of years that Juventus has been in existence since its formation in 1897. President Agnelli, whose family have a long history with the club, spoke words of encour-agement to those who filled the raf-ters. "Welcome home!” he said. “We're tens of millions around the world, millions in Italy and hundreds of thousands in the city." "We're a people who know how to enjoy ourselves, how to suffer, to grit our teeth, we're the people of Juve. We're people who recognize and know how to accept results achieved on a green pitch such as
this one, with lines that don't lie be-cause the pitch always tells the truth." The team rejoiced with a 1-1 draw against Notts County during a night full of spirited celebration.
The English side was picked as a symbol of its link to the bianconeri’s history. Notts County, founded in 1862, is the oldest professsional soc-cer club in the world. Back in 1903, a Juventus player, Englishman
John Savage, helped to arrange for the Italian club to wear the Notts’ black and white stripes, instead of the pink shirts that they had worn until then. The team also took the opportu-
nity to remember the thirty-nine victims of the Heysel Sta-dium disaster as well as for-mer Juventus legend Gaetano Scirea. Probably the most wonder-ous spectacle of the evening was the appearance of the bench on which sat the stu-dents who founded the club, which was lowered from the sky. Better still was that, upon that bench sat the two greatest goalscorers in Juve’s history: Giampiero Boniperti and Alessandro Del Piero. "I'm here after 67 years to give you all a hug. Winning isn't important, it's the only thing that counts," said 83-year-old Boniperti. He held the record as Juventus’ greatest goalscorer for 50 years until current club cap-tain Alessandro Del Piero overtook him. "I'm delighted to have contributed to writing a part of the 114 years of history, of fantastic pages and memo-r i e s , "
said Del Piero before the fireworks be-gan.

Juventus has announced the signing of a three-year contract with Michele Pazienza. The combative midfielder looks to impress new Coach Anotnio Conte and catch the eye of Italian National Team Coach Cesare Prandelli. He told Juventus Channel: "I am happy to have this new challenge. I want to show that I belong at this big club." When asked about the Italian Team, he added: "Prandelli has said he will choose who plays based on continuity. So my aim is to find a place at Juventus, then I will think about the rest."
New addition Andrea Pirlo also looks to add balance to the team. He has an ability to switch play effortlessly and in-fluence the flow of the game from the beginning to the end, which adds to the base of the midfield which will be key to Juve’s quick adaptation to Conte’s 4-2-4 system.
Juventus’ signings reinforces its problematic positions on the flanks as well as adds new options in midfield and attack, giving the club a number of reasons to feel positive about its upcoming season.

16 teams emerge from the initial qualifying round. They join the 16 seeded teams in the group stage, in which there are 8 groups of 4 teams. The eight first and second place winners compete in the final knockout phase, with the final match ion May 19, 2012.
Played with three qualifying rounds, one play-off round and a 48-team group stage, with five subsequent knockout rounds. In the qualifying matches, there are three qualifying rounds and the play-off stage where clubs play two matches against each (home/away) with the better club ad-vancing to the next round. In the group stage, 48 teams are divided into 12 groups of 4, who will face each other (home/away) with the top two of each group and 8 third-placed sides from the UEFA Champions League advancing to the next round. From the last 32 until the semi-finals, clubs play two matches against each other (home/away) in a knock-out phase. The final is decided by a single match to be played May 9, 2012.

Totò Schillaci e il mondo dello spettacolo

Salvatore Schillaci nasce in un quartiere povero di Palermo il 1° dicembre del 1964. Il calcio è la sua
passione e, dopo un campionato nella categoria dilettanti, approda al Messina, dove gioca sette campionati dal 1982 al 1989 tra serie B e serie C. Nella stagione 1988-89 si laurea capocannoniere della serie cadetta con 23 gol e questo gli permette di essere ingaggiato dalla Juventus. Il suo esordio in serie A avviene il 27 agosto 1989. Da quel momento inizia la favola di “Totò”, che realizza il sogno di quando era bambino: giocare nella squadra per la quale ha sempre fatto il tifo. Il primo anno, da titolare al fianco di Casiraghi e Rui Barros, fa faville. Realizza, infatti, 15 gol in 30 partite di campionato e contribuisce in maniera decisiva al
successo dei bianconeri in Coppa Italia e in Coppa Uefa. Si conquista così un posto nel cuore dei tifosi
bianconeri, che lo accostano ad un altro vecchio idolo venuto dalla Sicilia, Pietro Anastasi. Il suo momento di maggior fortuna è con la Nazionale di Vicini nei mondiali casalinghi del 1990. Parte in panchina come riserva di Vialli e Carnevale, ma appena entra in campo è un’esplosione. I suoi occhi spiritati in quel mondiale che ci vide al terzo posto sono entrati nella storia del calcio e del costume italiano. Le “notti magiche” di Italia ‘90 hanno esaltato e stravolto la sua vita. Trascinatore di un’intera nazione, vive il Mondiale con un’intensità impressionante, raggiungendo livelli di popolarità da psicosi. A Mondiale finito, è completamente svuotato e paga in prima persona tutto il clamore suscitato. Infatti, alle largamente preventivabili difficoltà della stagione successiva, i media, la critica ed i tifosi gli presentano il conto. Schillaci gioca ancora due stagioni a Torino, ma mostra una
crescente tendenza a sbagliare sottoporta, segnando pochissimo, finché non viene ceduto all’Inter, prima di concludere la sua carriera in Giappone. Si ritira dall'agonismo nel 1999, dopo un lungo infortunio che lo tiene lontano dai campi di gioco già dal 1997, anno della vittoria in J-League. Dal 2000 gestisce a Palermo il centro sportivo per ragazzi “Louis Ribolla” ed è proprietario dell'U.S. Palermo, squadra che negli anni ha militato nelle categorie calcistiche regionali. Nel 2004 cerca di affermarsi nel m o n d o d e l l o s p e t t a c o l o , accettando di partecipare come concorrente alla trasmissione “L’isola dei famosi”, versione italiana del
reality show americano “Celebrity Survivor”, in cui un gruppo di concorrenti VIP deve riuscire a sopravvivere su un'isola deserta senza alcun tipo di comodità. Schillaci si fa notare per la propria genuinità, ma anche per il basso livello culturale. Il pubblico però lo premia, facendolo arrivare tra i tre finalisti. Nel 2010 si lancia anche nella fiction, con un piccolo ruolo nella serie “Squadra antimafia - Palermo oggi”. Schillaci interpreta il ruolo di un boss mafioso, ma compare soltanto in un paio di scene, nella seconda delle qual i v iene ucciso. Intanto, nell’attesa, forse vana, che la sua carriera da attore spicchi il volo, continua a trasmettere ai calciatori in erba di Palermo la sua grande passione per il calcio, che per lui ha sempre significato una sola cosa: fare gol.

Partita fondamentale per la successiva vittoria dello scudetto, perché nella stessa giornata il Torino, rivale per il titolo, perde con il Milan. 9) 14 aprile 2001, Juventus-Inter 3-1: Partita senza storia, la Juve schiera il trio d’attacco Zidane, Del Piero e Inzaghi. Nell’Inter gioca qualche scampolo di partita persino Ferrante. I tre gol vengono realizzati nell’arco di 12 minuti, dal 6° al 18° del secondo tempo. A segnare Tacchinardi, Inzaghi e Del Piero. Per l’Inter Vieri su rigore.
8) 13 febbraio 2011, Juventus-Inter 1-0: Olimpico di Torino tutto esaurito, sulla panchina bianconera siede Del Neri. Alessandro Matri, da poco arrivato a Torino, castiga la squadra di Leonardo con uno splendido colpo di testa nel primo tempo. Per il
resto della partita dominiamo. Solo nel finale lasciamo qualche occasione all’Inter, che le sbaglia clamorosamente. 7) 20 ottobre 1996, Juventus- Inter 2-0: L’Inter è in testa al campionato, ma la Juve vince il derby d’Italia e la supera. Partita a senso unico, con continui attacchi dei bianconeri. Il palo di Boksic prelude al gol di Jugovic. I tifosi interisti sono nervosi, ma il capolavoro di Zidane da fuori area li mette a tacere. Ferrara trova ancora il tempo per colpire la traversa. 6) 5 dicembre 2009, Juventus-Inter 2-1: Una delle poche buone partite con Ferrara allenatore. Un rocambolesco colpo di testa di Melo sorprende Julio Cesar e manda su tutte le furie Mourinho, che viene espulso. Pareggia Eto’o dopo poco, ma nel secondo tempo Marchisio con uno splendido controllo di palla e un pallonetto regala la vittoria alla Juve. 5) 22 marzo 2008, Inter-Juventus 1-2: È la prima stagione dopo il ritorno in serie A. All’andata finisce 1 a 1. A San Siro tutti i gol nel secondo tempo. Camoranesi in fuorigioco porta in vantaggio la Juve, poi Trezeguet raddoppia di testa. Troppi nostri errori non ci permettono una vittoria più schiacciante e sul finale l’Inter segna e spera nella rimonta. Ma la Juve tiene duro e porta a casa una grande vittoria. 4) 28 ottobre 1990, Juventus-Inter 4-2: Anche Maifredi riuscì a battere l’Inter. La Juve fa la partita con un gioco spettacolare, che fa impazzire il Delle Alpi. Vantaggio di Baggio su rigore, raddoppio di Casiraghi di testa e siamo ancora al 15°.
Matthäus accorcia, ma Schillaci nel secondo tempo segna il terzo gol. Poi la Juve dilaga con De Agostini. Non serve a niente il gol del centravanti nerazzurro Klinsmann. 3) 2 marzo 2003, Juventus-Inter 3-0: Strapotere della Juve di Lippi grazie al gioco di squadra, mentre l’Inter risponde con sterili individualismi. Tanti svarioni difensivi per i milanesi, a partire dall’autogol che ci regala il vantaggio. Segue uno splendido gol da fuori area di Nedved, che aveva appena chiesto di uscire per problemi alla schiena. Del ceco è anche l’assist per il 3 a 0 di Camoranesi sul finale. 2) 2 ottobre 2005, Juventus-Inter 2-0: Nell’anno dello scudetto a tavolino l’Inter di Mancini ottiene 0 punti negli scontri diretti con la Juve di Capello. All’andata perentorio 2 a 0 con entrambi i gol nel primo tempo. Prima Trezeguet sugli sviluppi di una punizione di Ibrahimovic, poi Nedved direttamente da calcio piazzato. L’Inter punta tutto sul gioco falloso, ma serve solo a far uscire Ibra dal campo anzitempo. 1) 12 febbraio 2006, Inter-Juventus 1-2: A inizio gara l’Inter in attacco presenta la coppia Adriano-Martins, la Juve Trezeguet e Ibrahimovic. Ritmo alto sin dal fischio d’inizio e tante occasioni da entrambe le parti. Gol giustamente annullato all’Inter nel primo tempo. Violento fallo di Samuel su Ibra pochi minuti dopo che lo svedese ha segnato il gol del vantaggio. L’argentino viene soltanto ammonito e poi segna il pareggio. Ci pensa Del Piero con un calcio di punizione perfetto a chiudere la partita e anche il campionato. Inter a -12 e scudetto in tasca con tre mesi di anticipo.

Who’s talking about Juve now? Flashpoint, CTV’s Canadian police drama series which airs on Friday’s at 9 p.m., is one of my favourite televi-sion shows. So imagine my surprise when I settle in for the hour on August 19 and one minute into the epi-sode Spike (Sergio Di Zio) is sitting next to his father’s hospital bed, updating him on Juve’s “dark days.” “Three losses in a row. Too much “old” in the “Old Lady.”” I won’t spoil the episode (“Shockwave” Season 7 Epi-sode 4) for those who’ve not seen it or want to watch it. It’s a touching moment between father and son and excellent set up for the episode’s, and season’s, per-sonal sacrifice theme. Check out CTV.ca for the full episode. Christina Salvino
How Juve Got Its Nicknames During its history, the club has acquired a number of nicknames, la Vecchia Signora (the Old Lady) being the best example. The "old" part of the nickname is a pun on Juventus which means "youth" in Latin. It was derived from the age of the Juventus' star players towards the middle of 1930s. The "lady" part of the nickname is what fans of the club referred to it as affectionately prior to the 1930s. The club is also nicknamed la Fidanzata d'Italia (the Girlfriend of Italy), because over the years they have re-ceived a high level of support from Southern Italian im-migrant workers (particularly from Naples and Palermo), who arrived in Turin to work for Fiat since the 1930s. Matthew Sinikivi, one of the Caledon Canadians who traveled to Italy,
thanks in part to the sponsorship of the Juventus Club DOC Toronto, tells us about his experience
on his memorable trip
On Friday April 15, 2011, I was up at 6am to finish p a c k i n g and begin what was going to be a very ex-
citing day. My mom asked me if I was most excited about the plane or the journey ahead. I told her that I was just excited to go and play soccer.
My dad drove me to the airport and at about 5pm I boarded my flight for Rome with the other members of the Caledon Canadians. This was my first time on an airplane.
We landed in Rome at 2am our time, about 8am there. We launched straight into a big day of sight seeing. We boarded the bus to go into Rome and then went on foot for what Issie told us was about 30km of walking.
Our first stop was Saint Peter's Basilica in Vatican City. This church was totally amazing and worth the hour and a half wait to go inside. Although I was only inside for about 10 minutes I managed to shoot about 150 photos. Everywhere I looked there were statues, paintings, marble columns and floors. After this we walked to the Trevi fountain, Colosseum and other famous landmarks in Rome, such as The Victor Emmanuel Monu-ment which is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. It was cool to see that the streets and sidewalks were very old looking and the stone was very smooth. By the time I went to bed at 11pm, I had been awake for about 35 hours with about only 30 minutes of sleep.
The next day we went to Saint Peter’s square for the mass blessing from the Pope. After that we got some ice cream and then stopped in some local shop and I bought a soccer ball. Then we boarded the bus for a long 4 hour
bus ride south to Agropoli.
During the entire bus ride there were mountains on both sides of the road. Our hotel in Agropoli was on the Medi-terranean Sea, but it was too cold to swim, although two of my teammates did anyways. I played some soccer out-side of the hotel with my new ball and some friends until midnight when I went to bed.
Our first game was in the big tourna-ment stadium on a grass field. I was in the starting lineup and played right for-ward. In that game the game ball was the one I bought for myself in Rome. I was subbed off , but not before I got our first and only goal of that game, which we won 1-0. One of the dads from the team had an international phone plan, I was able to call my mom and dad and tell them about my goal. They were very proud of me.
The next day we boarded the bus to go to a game on a artificial turf field up in the mountains. We won that game 2-1, though we lost our third game 4-1.
The next day we were able to sleep in for the first time and I actually woke up at 11am and we left for the opening ceremonies. As a team we decided to trade our jackets. That’s when it got a little crazy, as everyone wanted to trade for the Canada jackets. I traded with a boy from Roma.
We lost our next game 2-0 and I was injured during a hard shoulder to shoul-der tackle. My arm was swollen for about 5 days. That night the group I played cards with were gifted with two chocolate soccer cleats. We could not save them, so we ate most of them.
The next day we packed our bags to leave for a game against Ghana. The fields that we were to play on are the fields that the national team trains on. Unfortunately, Ghana was stuck at the border and could not make it to the tournament. We played two single half friendly games against two teams that
were also waiting there to play. We won both games and I scored another goal and got a couple of assists.
On the way to Calabria we stopped to see more ancient ruins. The ruins were of the places where the gladiators fought and you could still see the holes where the tigers came out of. We also saw a theater area and where their homes were.
Easter Sunday we went into town early for the Easter Celebrations. This town has customs that are very old, in which the town members run through the streets with statues. Then we went to visit a friend of Issie's. His son made wooden cutting boards for everyone from the olive trees in their yard. I gave mine to my mom. She loves it! He also carved many beautiful things in their home, including neat designs on the floors.
We then went to the Calabria home field where we played the team that had come here last summer. That game ended with a tie of 2-2.
That night, which was our last in Italy, we had a huge feast. Dinner lasted from 8pm to midnight and had more food than we could possibly eat. We got back to the hotel around 1am, packed, played cards until 4am, then boarded the bus and headed for the airport for the flight to bring us back to Canada. I was so tired I actually slept through the take off on the first flight and woke only minutes before landing. We were welcomed by family members waving Canadian flags and cheering for us.
I feel very lucky to have gone on this trip and I have many wonderful memo-ries. My most memorable moments in Italy are of when we played soccer out on the streets. Everywhere we went people always asked for us to kick them the ball and they would do a few keep ups and then kick it back to us. It was great being around so many people who love soccer as much as I do. I will always be grateful to the people who made this trip possible for me and also to Issie (our guide), Tony (my coach), Bassi (our assistant coach and trainer), Mary (the team manager) and all of the Caledon Canadians and their fami-lies. John Charles is widely considered to have been the greatest all-round footballer ever to come from Brit-ain. He was a world class player in both the centre-half and the centre-forward position. There is no com-parable player with that kind of
range today. Talented, he main-tained controlled mastery over the ball, a powerful player who boasted superb aerial skills. In April 1957, Charles captained Wales, in the presence of Umberto Agnelli, President of Juventus. Ag-nelli was impressed and, in August, Charles signed for Juventus at a record transfer fee for a British player. In Torino, Charles was paired with Omar Sivori on the Juventus front line. The combination was explo-sive. In his first year in Serie A Charles was voted the best player in Italy. In his five years with Juven-tus, Charles won three Serie A Championships and two Italian Cups. He scored 93 goals in 155 games. Juventus fans nicknamed him, "Il Buon Gigante" - the Gentle Giant.
He was never once cautioned or sent off in a game. Though Charles retired from League football in 1966, what remains is the unforgettable legend of the Gentle Giant. His name continues to be revered in Italy where he is easily the most successful Britain to play the Italian League.
