The Lord’s Day August 23, 2020 The Sanctuary Ten-Fifteen a.m.

THE PATHWAY TO GOD’S HEALING Come, let us return to the Lord. For He has torn us, but He will heal us; He has wounded us, but He will bandage us. He will revive us after two days. He will raise us up on the third day that we may live before Him. So let us know, let us press on to know the Lord. - Hosea 6:1-3a

PRELUDE — “Holy, Holy, Holy”…………………………………………………... arr. Dykes WELCOME TO WORSHIPERS SCRIPTURAL CALL TO WORSHIP ……………………………………………. Psalm 22:1-5 HYMN OF GATHERING — “Holy, Holy, Holy” …………………………. Heber-Dykes Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty! Early in the morning Our song shall rise to Thee. Holy, holy, holy, merciful and mighty! God in three Persons, blessed Trinity!

Holy, holy, holy! All the saints adore Thee, casting down their Golden crowns around the glassy sea; Cherubim and seraphim, Falling down before Thee, who wert and art, and, evermore shalt be.

Holy, holy, holy! Though the darkness hide Thee, though the eye of Sinful man Thy glory may not see; only Thou art holy; There is none beside Thee, perfect in power, in love, and purity.

Holy! Holy, holy! Lord God Almighty! All Thy works shall praise Thy name in earth and sky and sea; Holy, holy, holy, Merciful and mighty! God in three Persons, blessed Trinity! A RESPONSIVE LITANY Leader: Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty! People: We confess that we come to worship God as an unholy and broken people. Leader: Our sin has diminished us. People: We are aware of how poorly we live up to being in covenant with God through our faith in Jesus Christ. Leader: We are people who live contentious, fragmented, and anxious lives. People: Then wonder why it is so difficult to enjoy the fullness of God’s love. Leader: Today we hear the words of a long ago prophet, “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge, because they have rejected knowledge.” People: May we worship to learn more of God’s truth so that we might better walk in God’s way.

SPIRITUAL FORMATION HIGHLIGHTS

MEDITATION — AUGUST 24 at 8:30 a.m. in the Sanctuary How is your prayer life these days? Father James Martin, consultant to the Vatican’s Secretariat for Communications and frequent news contributor ad-vises: “When prayer is difficult, God invites us to keep showing up.” Come and learn what it means to “show up for God.” SUNDAY SCHOOL PROMOTION CERTIFICATE PICK UP — Sunday, August 30, 4:00-8:00 p.m. If your child is entering Kindergarten, 2nd, 4th, 6th or 8th grade, their certifi-cate will be ready for pick up in Room D8 (Coed II classroom) from 4:00-8:00 p.m. on August 30. Bibles will also be given to those who are entering Kin-dergarten and 4th grade. SUNDAY SCHOOL FACULTY MEETING — Sunday, August 30 at 6:30 p.m. “A Cool Treat and a Hot Seat” — PLEASE RSVP! Faculty of all age groups: Please make plans to gather in the Fellowship Hall on the evening of August 30, because we have a special event just for you! Your Pastor and Spiritual Formation Minister will be in the “Hot Seat” in that you will be able to ask them any theological, scriptural or *Christian+ life application question you like. It would be good to have at least most of the questions in advance for preparation purposes, so please submit them by August 26. You can drop them by the church office or email them to Lynn or Jack. The “Cool Treat” will be the refreshments. We will have a choice of frozen treats available for you to enjoy as you watch Jack and Lynn respond to the questions. This format is a little different as far as meetings or trainings go, but you have the chance to ask that question that has always made you wonder about the Bible, God, Church or Christian life. This should be a fun event that will energize us for the upcoming Sunday School year. Let Lynn or Chris know if you are coming, or call the church office to reserve your spot, so we know how many “treats” to have available.

ON HOPE . . . Hope is a state of mind independent of the state of the world. If your heart’s full of hope, you can be persistent when you can’t be optimistic. You can keep the faith despite the evidence, knowing that only in so doing has the evidence any chance of changing. So while I’m not optimistic, I’m always very hopeful.

William Sloane Coffin

Unison: Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty! Guide us and inspire us to become more whole and holy. Amen. THE GLORIA PATRI Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost! Just as I am and waiting not to rid my soul of one dark blot, To Thee whose blood can cleanse each spot, O Lamb of God, I come, I come!

Just as I am though tossed about, with many a conflict, many a doubt, Fightings and fears, within, without, O Lamb of God, I come, I come!

COME BY THE CHURCH SUNDAY, AUGUST 30

4:00-8:00 PM We are inviting the church family to drop by the church and Building D anytime from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. on the afternoon and evening of August 30. First of all, the 2020 Vision Building Committee has been hard at work and is ready to show and discuss some of its findings with the congregation regarding better facilities for Juniors, room assignments, and future needs. They would like your feedback and to answer

your questions prior to their final report to the church in conference. In addition, as this is Promotion Sunday, we will have promotion certifi-cates for children who are moving up to a new class (three-year olds, and ris-ing Kindergarten, 2nd Grade, 4th Grade, 6th Grade and 8th Grade), and the church will have Bibles to present to rising Kindergarteners and 4th Graders as they enter our K-3 and Juniors Ministry. As this Sunday marks the end of a trimester, there will be new Sunday School material to distribute for all ages. And we will have the 2020-2021 Nominating Committee Report and proposed Ministry Budget available for pickup and review. The Sunday School faculty will enjoy time together that evening at 6:30 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall. It promises to be a big day, and we hope to see you as you drop by the church on August 30.

OUR WORSHIP GUESTS IN THE SANCTUARY This morning we welcome to the Sanctuary some of our worship only members and friends! We wanted everyone to have been invited at least once to worship in the Sanctuary and did not want to forget those not in a Sunday School class. Next Sunday, August 30, we are going to invite our Juniors to be with us for Sunday School and worship. At 9:00 a.m. there will be Juniors Sunday School and one adult class for parents of Juniors. Then Juniors and their parents may enjoy worship together in the 10:15 a.m. service. Youth, Coed I, and Coed III will be our guests for Sunday School and worship on September 6, and Coed IV will be our September 13 guests. Our hope is that everyone can be invited back on September 20 to our two sessions of worship and Sunday School if we have entered Phase III of reopening.

SANCTUARY CHOIR REHEARSAL

The Sanctuary Choir will be rehearsing this Wednesday evening at 7:00 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall. If you would like to consider joining the choir, this would be a great oppor-tunity to come out and try a rehearsal. Choir members are singing from tables throughout the Fellowship Hall with so-

cial distancing. We hope to see you on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.

Food items can be placed in the marked bins by the Church Office (Building D) and Nursery Area (Building B).
