Ventilation Strategies for new homesOutdoor air pollution impacts the indoor environment through opening windows and doors or through purposely installed ventilation systems. Ventilation is a requirement of the Building Regulations under Part F and is in place to protect people living within dwellings. Given the increasing external pollution, ventilation strategies in both new and existing homes should now be considered crucial to well-being and health and not just about energy effi ciency.

Whole House Heat Recovery Ventilation is widely considered to improve indoor air quality and can help reduce the symptoms of respiratory illnesses where clean fresh air is continuously drawn into the home.

Indoor Air QualityThe impact of poor indoor air quality on health is high on the agenda. This has resulted in increased planning requirements placed on residential dwellings in urban areas and many Local Authorities declaring areas within their boroughs as Air Quality Management Areas (AQMA).

In a recent report, DEFRA estimates that NO2 pollution causes up to 23,500 premature deaths a year (UK) and that traffi c pollution is

contributing to the rising number of children with asthma. Up to 3000 schools and many homes, including those planned to be built, are in areas that breach the WHO (World Health Organisation) air pollution limits.

This includes levels of hazardous NO2 that are above the stringent levels set out in the EU Directive 2008/50/EC – European Union Air Quality and Clean Air for Europe 2008.

Air Quality Planning Restrictions and Air FiltrationWhere external air pollutants exceed the recommended rates set, developers and consulting engineers need to meet specifi c requirements, including specifying NO2 fi lters up to including the fi rst three storeys of a new development.

A specialist fi lter system can be used with MVHR systems in domestic applications to reduce Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2) and other common pollutants to the home and comply with the requirements of the EU Directive.

Filter needs replacing

The fi lter cartridge is made up of a series of G3 and Carbon Filters. The Carbon fi lter has colour cell grading to show when it needs replacing.

The Zehnder NOX fi lter has a unique glass panel located as shown on the base. This eliminates the need to open the entire front panel to check the fi lter status.

On-site just simply and quickly open the access hatch and view the colour status.

We design our systems and place the NOX fi lters AFTER the MVHR system.

Why?G3 Filters located within the MVHR unit will remove airborne particles before reaching the NOX fi lter.

Since the air is pre-fi ltered, the lifetime space of the NOX fi lter can be improved, helping reduce the maintenance cycle and costs.

MVHR is a holistic whole house ventilation solution. We focus design on a total system approach to ensure the best performance is achieved and the elimination of noise and costs associated with complaints and call backs due to poor performance when installed.

Our NOX fi lters have been designed to ensure they;

• provide the crucial levels of fi ltration required

• minimise impact on the airfl ow performance of the system

• are long lasting, helping reduce maintenance cycles and costs
