Working with the slab method of handbuilding

FEATURED ARTIST: CHRIS GRYDER

Zentangle Tiles

Page 2: Zentangle Tiles

Using the slab method of handbuilding you will be creating a 6x6 clay tile with a relief surface of textures, lines, and patterns using additive, subtractive, and impressing methods of decorating.

The purpose of this project is to become familiar with the slab method of handbuilding as well as using the additive, subtractive, and impressing methods of decorating.

The Project and Objective

Page 3: Zentangle Tiles

Vocabulary Texture - the surface feel of an object. There

are 2 types.◦ Actual Texture is the texture you can actually feel

with your hand. Impressions in clay, or layering pieces of clay can create texture.◦ Simulated Texture is the illusion of physical texture,

created with the materials you use. Media can be manipulated to give the impression of texture, while the surface remains smooth and flat.

What type of texture will we be dealing with in Ceramics?

Vocabulary Relief – a relief is a form of sculpture where the

object is flat on one side and is protruding out from the “front”. Here is a great example!

Vocabulary Additive – to add clay for decoration by

scoring, slipping, and smoothing small pieces of clay onto another.

Subtractive – to remove clay for decoration.

Impressing – to impress textures or patterns into clay for decoration.

So what exactly is a Zentangle? A Zentangle is a drawing

that has multiple patterns and lines tangled within eachother.

Whoa! No one said I had to draw in Ceramics! Sketching is an

important step in creating 3D work. And don’t act like you haven’t drawn something like this in math before.

Why do you think it is called Zentangle?

Page 9: Zentangle Tiles

From 2D to 3D You will be creating a

zentangle of your own and creating it in clay.

The Process – you will want to start writing again.DAY 1 - Monday Step one: Inspirational Texture Collection Step two: Zentangle Drawing – due at the start of class

Tuesday.

DAY 2 - Tuesday Step three: Demo day – How to create a slab, add,

subtract, and impress clay. Step four: Begin work

DAY 3 - Wednesday Step five: Drying and turning in for a grade
