Charley Rattan

• Renewable energy strategist trainer

• Shell, SSE, Eon; 15 years renewables

• Supply chain mapping, energy entrepreneurs, offshore wind – SME’S North West

• Maximising local benefits

• Chamber low carbon - Chambers of Commerce

• Green Rose scheme, ISO 9001

• Supply chain and especially SME’s

Zero carbon - what does it mean?

• Carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere from burning fossil fuels, (to be replaced) with renewable energy that creates a similar amount of useful energy, so that the carbon emissions are compensated, or alternatively using only renewable energies that don't produce any carbon dioxide (also called a post-carbon economy)

• Large companies RE100 buying in green power through PPA’s also directly buying into wind farms M&S, Ikea, Nestle, Shell

Carbon emitters?

• Industry

• Transport

• Utilities

• Construction and built environment

• Domestic consumers

• Farming and agriculture

• Public sector includes schools, NHS, universities and local government

• Cultural, sport and leisure, faith & charities

Implications for organisations and SME’s

• Contracts will contain carbon footprint metrics

• Procurement?

• Shell, SSE et al driving CSR into supply chain will have to show ‘green’ evidence

• Planning, housing, offices, energy requirements EV points

• Internet of things and ‘virtual power plants’

• Congestion charging £100 pd HGV’s Manchester

• Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA) pledge to ensure that all new buildings erected in the city region will be 'net-zero' carbon by 2028.

• Green construction and economic growth

• Rise of SME Prosumer

Other objectives:

• ALL transport and fuel in the GMCA to be renewable by 2038, including widespread electrification of cars and public transport.

• Homes and business would need to switch to clean energy, buildings will have to be retrofitted to improve their insulation and more green space created

• Planning implications

• “this sector is growing at four times the rate of the wider economy, worth nearly 40,000 jobs and over £5bn to Greater Manchester.”

The fourth industrial revolution

• Electric vehicles - and associated infrastructure

• Diesel and fossils will be replaced

• Smart grids, smart tariffs

• VPP’s

• Solar roofs household and EV batteries, integrated tariffs with smart control

• Biomass

• Hydrogen Fuel cells, generators and boilers

• Heat pumps - ground and air source

• Renewable PPA’S

• Prosumer opportunities on-site generation factories, institutions, organisations.

Local authorities can generate from renewables

• Liverpool tidal array

• Warrington solar and battery storage

• Greater Manchester?

• Lancashire?

Sustainable growth

Who will let contracts as North West grows - sustainably?

Supply chain pressures as majors driven by their Corporate Social Responsibility agendas go green Shell, SSE et al will drive their own suppliers

Mayor Burnham GMCA commitment to ZERO Carbon November 2018, to be operational by 2038, Steve Rotheram Liverpool City Region 2040

Circular economic principles

What getting to zero carbon means

• Diesel and fossil fuels replaced

• Electric/ hydrogen vehicles - (and associated infrastructure)

• Biomass, hydrogen blue gas and fuel cells, generators and boilers

• Heat pumps – roll-out already started

• Renewable Power Purchase Agreements

• Prosumer - on-site generation factories, institutions, organisations

Page 14: Zero Carbon Manchester by 2038 How to get there!...•Renewable PPA’S •Prosumer opportunities on-site generation factories, institutions, organisations. Innovation • Solar car

What getting to zero carbon means to SME’s?

• Short term shock and possibly pain as realisation of what bold climate vision entails

• Early thought can lead to fresh thinking on energy

• Assess energy needs, including heat and transport

• Year on year efficiency improvement

• Emissions controls tightening

• Taking advantage of opportunities

• The danger of missing out - rivals are acting

• Prepare now!

Next steps

• GMCA /LCR similar aspirations along with carbon capture, offshore wind and hydrogen

• Lancashire planning for a low carbon economy

• Manchester innovation supply chain – entrepreneurs demanding a voice and regular engagement

• Lancashire response?

• Call to action for those wishing to drive the new supply chain

• A final thought!
