Projects ImplementationWhen talking about a new vision for the team, the new vision of the projects implementing must be defined, because projects are SIFE main purpose. Changing the vision of projects is a must first by focusing on certain locations where we can touch a reach remarkable changes, and assure that the team improving the quality of life and standards of living of the targeted group and to assure that the team resources are effectively employed. By following the following guile line we can assure that our team will double the performance and double the out come.

• Outcomes desired and how to measure the project’s success in improving the quality of life and standard of living for others. The team must clearly identify the measurement tools that will be used. Additionally, a wish list of outcomes-desired can be created. In regards to improvement in Quality of Life, which social, cultural, and emotional circumstances.

• Specific tasks and corresponding deadlines required for project completion. Once the planning phase is complete and timelines are set, teams can move forward with the implementation phase.

Board of Consulting SIFE was active on our campus since 2009, he founders of this team passed through different stages

than the one we passed through. Also these founders and the members were at their time some of them were graduated and were exposed to real life problems. It’s time to initiate an alumni for SIFE BUE. A board of consulting asking for the guidance and help of the old SIFE BUE student who have done a great job previous years and are no longer active. The high board will choose the members of the board of consulting according to there skills and experience that are fit to SIFE BUE mission, vision and goal where they will give a tremendous asset to the team.

• • • • • •Business Advisory Board If we want perfection for SIFE BUE it must be supported by people who rule the world outside the

campus. A Business Advisory Board who believe in our project, purpose and goal and wishes. They will provide mentorship and guidance for our team, advice on projects. Moreover introducing the team to other leaders in the community who will provide us with the needed resources, and give feed back about our progress. For such important role we contacted a three of those leaders to be members of our business advisory board [Mahrous Mohamed ,Mohammed Moneer & Ibrahim Meligy].

Public Relations Public relations is the first committee that needs redefining of it’s vision and mission, The blast that the public relations team would give the SIFE BUE by the new vision and mission is the first step towards success. The public relations team will work on increasing the publicity of the team on campus by delivering a full picture of the team achievements. Such good publicity will reach the administration and by time we will be give their full sport.Their missions will assist the fund-rising team and operation and logistics in executing their plans. Also the public relations team will work on the media coverage of the team projects of the past year by increase the team exposure to community and increasing the awareness of the community of SIFE BUE's projects existence.

Presentation Coordinator A new position first time to be introduced. The main goal of creating this position is to be well prepared for the presentations which we go through the year. This team is responsible for starting and completion of the presentation. After going through the preparation stage and rehearsals. This team will be active since the early beginning of the year, just after their minimum requirements to start are fulfilled. The head is going to select the team members who have the skills required. This team leader will have a high presentation skills and self confidence to coach them all over the year and the ability to choose the best who of who will represent SIFE BUE.

15

Page 16: Ziad Darwish[Presidential Plan 2012-2013] SIFE BUE

Fund Raising Fund raising committee been through hard time the previous years as the team financial stability is graded 0 out of 5 in the SIFE worldwide handbook team index score. Each year our fund raising team could not cover at least 20% of the funding needed to complete the projects.

Solutions were suggested first we will be asking the administration to allow us to on get our booth back to work after being shutdown for a year. We will be taking the risk by managing the booth by ourselves. We will be choosing the projects which will provide us with a constant fund instead of renting the booth. An alternative plan if the university administration rejected our proposal of getting back the booth we will be renting the SU booth.

The Fundraising team will be working on getting sponsors for our projects who will be providing us with the needed fund or resources.

Also the fundraising team will be introducing different events on and outside of campus.

Last but not least a number of fundraising projects are prepared and ready to be discusses with the fundraising head to open new channels and start thinking out of the box [SIFE Products,....etc].

Operation and Logistics ! Operation and logistics committee is such

a powerful team for organization it's responsible for the team development and monitoring. While being in charge when organizing meeting events and recrui t ing the new members. Also responsible for insuring that the team is following the team vision and not of track.

Operation team is responsible for developing the team members skills and discovering their abilities.

Then comes other responsibilities, by providing certain courses which are chosen and set deals for these courses. The suggested courses to be given are designing, video directing and video editing course for the media committee. Project planning course for project committee while financial visibility for research. And development committee, communication and marketing courses for fundraising.

Examples of courses which we've reached a deal and set till now which are financial visibility and project planning.

16

Page 17: Ziad Darwish[Presidential Plan 2012-2013] SIFE BUE

Research and DevelopmentResearch and development is the newly introduced committee which will assure a forward thinking for further projects which will be implemented. These projects will have a high credibility by proven research labs or financial visibility for SIFE BUE. This committee is starting strong where a deal sealed with university of Nevada to use the lab research and staff for researching for projects. The deal is researching for a mechanical project this year and working on a deal at the moment to research for civil, electrical and chemical projects for next year with Nevada University and other universities.

Next year also setting the deal for the financial visibility with one of our advisory board members to give a financial visibility course by providing us with a program that would make it easy to get a full financial visibility of any project and reviewing all our financial visibility before starting to work.

• • • • • •

Faculty Advisor This year SIFE BUE vision will require having two faculty advisor rather than one. After reviewing SIFE handbook " there is no limit on the number of advisors". Sticking to the guidance of Prof. John Adams as our main Faculty Advisor who guided us with the economical and calculation of the impact. Dr. Tarek Hatem chairman for American society for mechanical engineer chairman in Egypt and the coordinator of engineering for change in Egypt. Will hgive us a great support specifically with the technical issues and finding solutions for it.

• • • • • •

Media Committee The media committee since SIFE BUE started it always depended just one person

who is likely to be the head of this committee. Our a university doesn't have

faculties of as mass communication or fine arts.

SIFE BUE finds it hard to find students with the required skills but we depend on finding

students who have talents. Knowing the weakness point we could find a

solution by providing courses for designee, video editing as much early as possible at

the beginning of the academic year. The team will be required to create an existence

of our team online through video channel [vblog] where we will be introducing ideas

and solutions to the community. While at the same time our team is practicing and getting

ready for the final presentation.

Working StrategyThe main purpose of this section is to show you they strategy which i will be using during the coming year in order to make the most of our opportunities. We will work on enabling and encouraging team members to work together effectively to deliver great impact which will affect people lives.

• • • • • •Team DevelopmentA team is a living and dynamic entity. It could progress from an early to a mature phase, independent of the nature of the team. Our next phase is the performing stage.

In this phase our team has achieved harmony, defined its tasks, worked out its relationships, and we should be producing results. Leadership will be provided by the team members best suited for the task at hand. Members have learned how to work together, manage conflict and contribute their resources to meet the team's purposes.

We don’t aim to fix or build a particular team at a particular moment in time. We are working to create a deep connection of the dynamics of people working together to achieve success. A true team development focuses on individual action, feeling and accountability rather than on vague actions of team.

Team Development benefits• Team members will maintain their improved

effectiveness in the face of difficulties and continue to develop

• Sustainable improvements in performance. We align the changes to both the short term and long term performance of the team, and directioning the capabilities of its members to which it belongs.

• Success that can be measured I believe it is vital to agree clear success criteria so that subsequent evaluations are clear and focussed. We ensure that each committee determines appropriate, challenging targets that will enable it to measure success.

We will sustain our team effectiveness through

19

• Clearly stated and commonly held vision and goals. Our team goals are developed through a group process of team interaction and agreement in which each team member is willing to work towards achieving these goals.

•  Role clarity, particularly at the beginning.

•   Leadership is distributed and shared among team members and individuals willingly to contribute their resources as needed.

•  Workload sharing during the team’s lifespan to facilitate the accomplishment of tasks.

•  Team decision making involves a process that encourages active participation by all members during the team’s lifespan. It helps to build commitment.

•  Problem solving, discussing team issues, and assessing team effectiveness are encouraged by all team members.

•   Performance monitoring: the team members need to monitor each other's task execution and give feedback during task execution. Feedback is freely given as a way of evaluating the team's performance .

•   Team self-correction is the process in which members engage in eva lua t ing the i r performance and in determining their strategies after task execution..

•  The social environment is open and supportive with a focus on learning. Conflict is not suppressed. Team members are allowed to express negative feelings within the team which is managed and dealt with by team members. Dealing with and managing conflict is seen as a way to improve team performance.

Page 20: Ziad Darwish[Presidential Plan 2012-2013] SIFE BUE

Member IdentificationAlmost as certain as the sun rises in the east and sets in the west, all teams go through stages as they develop. What does vary is how long each stage takes.

How can you select the right team for a project?

Having the right core team can make a great progress. Therefore, great care should be taken when selecting team members. Using the following e lements we w i l l be ab le to touch the improvements during the shortest time period.

• Team size

• Overall team composition

• Team member selection and exclusion criteria

• Member recruitment processTeam size

We were never aiming for large number of members who don’t actually have effective existence within the team. Recommended size is a team of 3-12 members in order to work faster and tend to produce results quickly. While creating sub teams to operate effectively.

Overall team composition

We will focus on a team well-rounded who includes a mix of members having a wide range of experience and skills.

Our team member selection and exclusion criteria mainly depend on those people who are able to work well together for the project to succeed. When selecting team members, give preference to individuals who are:

• Concerned about and committed to the common

• Enthusiastic & Optimistic

• Creative, flexible and open minded

• Proactive

• Good team players

• Respect the values, beliefs and opinions of others

• Relate to and interact effectively with individuals and groups

• Are willing to cooperate to reach common goals.

Team WorkA teamwork is an individual member’s understanding about what is needed for a team to be successful. Each team member comes to a team with a pre-determined picture of how teams work that is influenced by prior experiences.

Four Guidelines for Effective Communication

• Focus on the behavior or problem, not on the person. People become defensive when criticized personally.

• Keep your verbal and nonverbal language on the same page. This limits confusion.

• Compliment team members on good ideas and suggestions.

• Everyone has a chance to speak. Encourage team members to express opinions and share ideas.Don’t let specific team members dominate the conversation. Ideas are lost this way.

• • • • • •

20

Page 21: Ziad Darwish[Presidential Plan 2012-2013] SIFE BUE

Decision MakingDecisions made by multiple individuals who openly share data, opinions, and experiences are almost always better, more teams to solve innovative, longer lasting decisions that those made by a single individual. It’s because of the diversity of experiences and opinions!

The process in some cases is harder because team members see things differently. But if everyone thought the same way, then the decision would not be very innovative at all. By talking about it, the team will be exposed to new possibilities.

This process either Compromise or Consensus, our team always used to compromise to find a solution which satisfies most of the members but, I chose to use the consensus technique.

What is a Compromise?

A compromise is one way of arriving at a decision that everyone involved can accept. The benefit to compromising is that it is expedient and allows the team to move on to the next task.

The problem with compromising is that the outcome doesn’t meet anyone’s expectations. Still, some members are satisfied with it than the others. As a result, not everyone is 100% committed to the solution, so not everyone will work towards implementing the decision. When decisions are determined by majority or authority, those who dissent lose their commitment.

What is Consensus?

In a consensus, the various points of view of each member of the team are considered, discussed, compared, and discussed again until everyone sees all views from the top. We might not all agree on the same decision, but it is important that all team member opinions are all heard.

The benefit to building consensus when making a decision is that everyone buys into the solution. This means that all team members will work towards making that solution work.

The key to consensus building is steering the discussion away from “right versus wrong” arguments.

Problem SolvingProblems come in many forms. Regardless of the form of the problem, our teams commonly did not know where to begin or how to proceed to solve it. Consequently, we choose to go through trial and error a little stumbling here and there they may try different approaches until something works or it doesn’t.

In organizations problem-solving which is a daily activity in our teamwork which we start finding solution by our selfs depending on our personal experiences. As a team of number of members each of us have a different background built upon what problems we have been exposed to before and as a result we develop our skills but in order to before efficient and time consuming.

A methodology that teams frequently use is the Seven Steps of Problem Solving. This framework helps a team to figure out not only where to start but also where to touch base whenever it encounters an obstacle.

Step1 : Identifying the Problem

! Knowing what is exactly the problem by ! eliminating any distractions .

Step 2: The Current Process

! What did we reach till this problem came up?

! What should be the next step?

! What kind of delay affected us?

Step 3 : Identify the root cause

! What are the possible causes of the problem?

! Which is most like?

Step 4: Develop solution and Action Plan

! What are the suggested solutions?

! What are the suggested alternatives?

! Which is the best solution or alternative?

! On what basis we chose a specific solution

Step 5: Implement

Step 6: Evaluate

Partnerships &Co-operationsPartnership is a collaborative agreement between two or more parties in which all participants agree to work together to achieve a common purpose or undertake a specific task and to share r isks, responsibilities, resources, competencies and benefits.

SIFE BUE will focus on strengthening our relationship with other entities. During the next year we will be working with different entities wither NGOs or Sponsors. In order to gain their trust we will be working on creating a professional

24

Steps were already taken to start our powerful partnership. We were able to set a deal with University of Nevada (located in Las Vegas, USA) where Engineering SIFE students started working on a research project for finding a solution to offer the basic needs which is low cast and can be implemented at the poorest areas in our society. These students are not just provided with support from University Professors but also they have started having a workshops at the University of Nevada.

Also we were able to contact two of the biggest and oldest organizations in Egypt Masr El Kheir and Nahdet EL Mahroosa. They were willing and provided us with their full support, As for Masr El Kheri they decided to partner with us on developing a poor village located in fayoum. While Nahdet el Mahrousa will provide us with the required courses and experts to help us as much as they can.

WinningSpecial Competition

SIFE special competition Aiming and working on achiving the first place at SIFE Egypt special competitions will make us gain publicity within the SIFE Community which will help in improving our team index score. Moreover these competitors each has a reward, which is considered as a constant starting fund for the year following.y.

Other Special competitionsSIFE BUE will be aiming to participate in o the r sepa ra te compe t i t i on (De l l

Competition, IEEE, WID,..etc) with the projects which we implement during the year. Participating in such competitions will require our team to work hard in earlier stage than what we used to work at which will act as a guide for us in order not loose track from we started and where are we and how much left to achieve our goal.In other words winning those competitions will increase the team motivation, publicity and getting support from the university administration. And even if we were not able to win those competition losing them will help in re evaluating our progress and the team members will gain even more experience.

National CompetitionSIFE BUE has reached it's performing stage, It's time for SIFE BUE to compete at the second round to win the national competition We can win, Now we have a team full of well experienced members, powered by a new vision and a new strategy a team aiming to serve their community and proudly present their country.

Frequently Asked QuestionsQ: Why are you running for SIFE President?I am a live example of how SIFE affects our personality and how we think. I was more of an incubator, i have been storing information and trying to learn more and more. I have gained skills and experience which i want to deliver to others. i want SIFE BUE to reach it's golden age and secure the sustainability.

SIFE changed who I am and it’s time to give back.

• • • • • •Q: What skills you have makes you capable of running this team? The benefit to building consensus when making a decision is that everyone buys into the solution. This means that all team members will work not everyone is 100% committed to the solution, so not everyone will work towards implementing the decision. When decisions are determined by majority or authority, those who dissent lose their commitment. The benefit to building consensus when making a decision is that everyone buys into the solution. • • • • • •Q: What is your experience with your university administration?I already have been in contact with the administration since i joined SIFE in 2009 and specially during the last two years. I have studied the personalities of the people in charge at the administration and as I stated within the plan before that we will be working on good relationship with the administrat ion by showing them our achievements to have their support. Also I’m not depending on them as a main source for the fundraising as we used to do before, but we need their support since we have the same mutual interest we are representing our university.

Q: How would you respond to people who think SIFE is useless?Well SIFE provides us with experience which we will never have expect if we get in contact with the community. Also we are not a charity work as most people might think and yes we are helping people but through development which is another prospective . We apply what is taught in lectures on land and we seek to see those results. Explaining the concept of the organization to those who think it’s useless might not be enough they will also be invited to join us on a task to see what we are actually doing.

• • • • • • Q: Did you choose your team leaders?

I am an old team member and I know all of the members abilities, and who is more effective in which position. But that doesn’t give me the right to force some one to a position while another member is seeking it. So some positions their leader will be assigned but if no candidates applied for it. And the final decision of who will take the place will not only be my decision but it’s my role and the high bored too.

" Broad Interests and ExpertiseDr. Hatem has been involved in the development of several computational mechanics tools that spans a multitude of length and time scales. Those vary from high-rise buildings to micro/nano materials, and from blast loads to quasi-static lab testing. Dr. Hatem’s research focuses on advancing the state of the art in materials by design, and to develop metallic alloys with superior properties for high impact applications in defense, aerospace and renewable energy. This approach been extended to study processing and defects evolution in semiconductor devices and solar cells. Prior background is concerned with design, failure mitigation and structural monitoring of large structures, satellites and mechanical systems.Current research objective is to develop, implement and validate a unified discontinuous computational representation of defects in materials and structures based on domain decomposition method for highly scalable computations, which extends over several length scales and thousand of processors. The proposed computational method represents defects in materials with minimal internal variables using new formulations for dislocation-density evolution and interaction in crystal plasticity that is coupled with predictive failure models (e.g. cracks, porosity, shear localization). Moreover, it links both atomistic models in nano-scale and finite element method in application scale (macro-scale). The computational framework is utilized to develop new steel and aluminium alloys with superior properties for high impact applications, and new developments for semiconductor devices and solar cells that decrease defects-density several orders of magnitude.

" Research Interests and ActivitiesNew computational models for failure and multiscale analysis: X-FEM; AEM; domain decomposition; particle methods; physical models for fractureDeformation mechanisms and heterogeneous failure modes in micro/nano materials: dislocation-density evolution; ductile and brittle failure systems; porosity nucleation, growth and coalescenceMaterials by design: morphology; grain/sub-grains boundaries; secondary phases; initial dislocations Object Oriented Design and Development of CAD/CAM: multiscale analysis; characterization; virtual-testing; homogenization; materials designDynamic behavior of materials: stress waves in solids; structural dynamics; adiabatic shear band formation; texture and inclusions effectsEvolution of phase transformation, and defects diffusion in solidsSmart structures: structural stability and design of smart structures and materials; active and passive control; shape memory alloys, Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) Agile technology entrepreneurship and commercialization
