Message from Pastor Tedd
Luther is said to have written that Animals are the footprints of God. I confess to you that I don’t know where that was
written, or if it is a true Luther quote, but I think it sounds like Luther. Animals become part of the family. I still miss Spotty
the Collie that was my protector, my best friend, my co adventurer as a child. We ran, we played in the creek (except
you have to pronounce it as crick), we had the best times together. There are footprints all over my heart from Spotty.
In looking through books on the shelves in the office area at Zion I found this beautiful children’s prayer on Page 30 in the
book noted below.
God bless the animals I love, Dogs wagging their tails,
Cats and kittens purring, Friendly horses and ponies.
God bless the birds I love—Baby chickens, Ducks on the pond, Robins in the garden.
God bless all wild creatures—Squirrels and hares, Birds building their nests,Larks singing.
God bless all who are kind to animals and birds, And if people are unkind, Teach them to be kinder
For Jesus sake, Because he loved even the sparrows.
by Elfrida Vipont
In Luke 12:6-7 we read—Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten in God’s sight. But
even the hairs of your head are all counted. Do not be afraid; you are of more value than many sparrows. And in Matthew
10:29-31: Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground unperceived by your Father.
And even the hairs of your head are all counted. So do not be afraid; you are of more value than many sparrows.
At a recent committee meeting, I shared that Zion must stop thinking as a large church and move thinking into the small
church mindset. I may have offended a few people at the meeting and I may have just offended you. That is not my inten
tion! I stand by my comment though. Karl Veters writes: Thinking small is not the same as small thinking. And it’s defi
nitely not an excuse for having a small vision (191). I am in no ways suggesting that Zion has a small vision. Vaters also
writes: No church has unlimited resources. Yes, we have a limitless God (128). Zion has to begin to prioritize and to
refocus the ministries of this congregation. That isn’t a negative process. As we just saw in Luke and Matthew -Do not be
afraid.
Think about how your family celebrates the seasons of Advent and Christmas. The members of Zion are being invited to
share your story together. One of the ways this is being facilitated is through sharing the story of your family creche.

More information about this will be shared soon, but as you think about your story, Zion’s story, and God’s story, it all related to those footprints of God.

Zion Sunday School Rally Day September 10, 2017
Project 1: “Military Care Packages” for service women and men serving overseas, including
Zion’s own service members. Collection will begin on Memorial Day. Items on the enclosed Military Care Package shopping list can be placed in the bin at the back of the nave through-out the summer, and all Zion members, young and “older”, can work together on September 10 to assemble them. Please keep in mind that everything should be small sized. See list on next page.
Project 2: “Hygiene Kits” for Church World Service. A second bin will be placed at the
back of the nave to collect items on the list below. These kits will also be assembled on Sep-tember 10, and each kit will include the specific items on the attached “shopping list”. We are not permitted to add extra items to the kits. A tube of toothpaste will be added by CWS to each hygiene kit prior to its journey. The value of each kit is $15, plus $2 processing. Cash donations to cover cost of items/mailing are greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Minutes of the Congregational Council
June 12, 2017
The meeting was called to order by the Vice President at 7:00 p.m.
Attendance: K. Huston, R. Gaylor, K. Gaylor, B. Lockard, G. Sechrist, K. Balcerak, S. Horner, B. Shively, D. Metzger, Pr. Tedd Cogar
Others: Dory Campbell
Devotions were led by Gail Sechrist based upon the 32nd Psalm.
Minutes for June were approved. M/Balcerak 2/K. Gaylor
Communications:
Brian Lee from Thrivent Financial attended the meeting to discuss an insurance bequest of Betty Reed. The amount of $19,122 will be put into a Thrivent interest-bearing account until there is a need for it. M/Shively, 2/Lockard
Financial Report (June, 2017):
Because of a few questions, the report will be dealt with at the August Council meeting.
Tellers for August volunteered.
Reports:
Standing Committees:
Ad/Fin: Recommended “Other Specials” dedicated account to fund the commission of a Zion hymn for the Reformation Sunday service, if other funds are not available. M/B. Gaylor, 2/Shively.
Because of all the time he spends at our functions and meetings, recommended Pastor Tedd be paid $50 per meeting. Approved. M/Huston, 2/Lockard.
Parish Education: Dory Campbell addressed Council about the need for a structure for Catechism. The at-tached handout describes the proposal recommended to Council for future Catechetical activities. Approved. M/Balcerak, 2/Horner.
Property: Dave Nycum has met with a restoration company from Pittsburgh. They believe the key to correcting the problem with the round stained glass window is the storm window. To professionally solve this matter, they estimate the cost to be $14,000 to $15,000. This will be further reviewed by the Property Committee.
Recommended the installation of a daytime security system for the Church Street door. The low bid of $1,446 was received from Jeff Patterson from Dynamark. This would permit controlled entry during the day when individuals might be working alone. Approved. M/Shively, 2/Lockard.
Health and Wellness: They have agreed to oversee the Prayer List.
Page 9
Council Minutes (continued)
OLD BUSINESS:
ZARP: Kevin has met with the architect, R. Robson, who has indicated he should have the bid information to us within a few weeks.
The ZARP Mgt. Committee has met and decided to send update letters to those who have pledged monies for the ZARP campaign. One letter will go to those who have fully met their pledge, and a different letter will go to those whose pledge has not been met, reminding them the drive ends this year.
NEW BUSINESS:
Synod Assembly: Kevin indicated he has returned from an excellent assembly with renewed vigor toward developing an increased sense of community within Zion. Evangelism and Rec & Fellowship continue to be charged with developing a plan to increase this sense. See item below.
2018 Budget: Council has set August 30 as the final due date for each committee’s budget request, as well as their annual reports. The September Council meeting will deal with the budget items. As noted in the June minutes: ALL COMMITTEES ARE REQUESTED TO DEVELOP THREE GOALS FOR 2018 ALONG WITH AN ESTIMATE OF HOW MUCH IT WILL COST TO ACHIEVE THEM. This will help the congregation evaluate the budget priorities it wishes to fund.
We need to take a more critical look at what we do and to what we commit our resources, financial and otherwise. Forms for this process will be given to the committees ASAP.
Constitution and Bylaws: Since they haven’t been upgraded in a decade, they will be addressed in 2018 by a committee appointed by Council.
Saturday July 29 service will be conducted by Dylan Brown.
Pastor Jennifer (Krentz) Obermueller and Bishop Jones have agreed to write articles for future newsletters.
A discussion took place concerning ideas to implement a start toward increased fellowship activities. A Nativity Scene Display will be planned in conjunction with a covered dish meal by the Evangelism and Rec and Fellowship committees during the Advent season. It is hoped many members will share their Nativity Scenes in the church so that we can see the wonderful variety of how our congregants utilize this depiction in their own homes.
With closing prayers, the meeting adjourned. M/B. Gaylor 2/B. Shively
Submitted: R. Gaylor, Secretary

2. Discussed ways to fund special music for Reformation Sunday. Worship and Music committee has proposed Brass and the commissioning of a hymn. 5. Reviewed a request through Dr. Clewell to allow Robin Malloy to use our organ for instruction of one of her students. Tabled this to gather additional information.
6. Discussed the budget for 2018. Committee will discuss this at the August meeting.

Discussed the need to examine and review files in the church office. Will ask each committee to appoint a representative to meet with Beverly Swatsworth to review any files pertaining to their committee for reten-tion, archive, or destruction. Also will look into getting storage devices for backing up files from the office computer.
Formal recommendations to council:
1. Recommend compensating Pastor Tedd Cogar $50.00 for attending each Zion committee meeting.
2. Recommend covering any donation shortfall for Special Reformation Day music from the “02” “Special Music” account.
