Themaximum scoreof theZungSDS is80.Lower scoresarebetter.TheZungSelfRatingDepression
Scale(ZungSDS)(Zung1965)wasdevelopedasaselfratedmeasureofdepressionseverity.Theauthor
intended the scale to be a quick and simple measure of symptoms. Items were selected to assess
affective,cognitive,behavioural,andphysiologicalaspectsofdepressiononthebasisofthediagnostic
criteriafor
depression
and
studies
available
at
the
time
(1965).
Although most DSMIV symptom criteria are included, no items cover symptoms more common in
atypical depressions, such as increased appetite (hyperphagia), weight gain, or sleeping to excess
(hypersomnia).A revisedversion in theEarlyClinicalDrugEvaluationProgram (ECDEU)manual (Guy,
1976)changedthewordingoftwoitems,addedaratingof0=noneofthetime,andchangedthetime
