Virtualization Components Virtual I/O Server (VIOS)– Required to connect to open storage

– Part of PowerVM DASD

– Fibre Channel adapter(s) assigned to VIOS LPAR in HMC

– LUNs are 512B open storage

– Each SAN LUN virtualized directly to IBM i client

– Storage pools not used in VIOS for IBM i

– LUNs virtualized by creating virtual target SCSI devices

Virtual SCSI adapters– Created in HMC

– Server SCSI adapter in VIOS, client SCSI adapter in IBM i

– Multiple pairs supported when HMC used

Optical– IBM i can use any DVD drive connected

to a supported VIOS adapter

– DVD drive in VIOS virtualized directly (OPTxx)

VIOS View I

VIOS is a separate partition type Command-line interface unless IVM-managed Not enabled by default on any IBM Power servers

– It is enabled on BladeCenter JS12, JS22 PowerVM Standard or Enterprise Edition must be ordered

– VIOS media

– Enablement code to allow partition type VIOS Use HMC to enter enablement code

– ASMI can also be used

VIOS View II

Once DS4000 LUNs are available in VIOS, they can be configured as virtual disks for IBM i

– Example: physical LUN hdiskX can be mapped as virtual disk for IBM i by creating a virtual target device (vtscsiX)

VIOS command line is used when HMC-managed– Telnet to VIOS; default administrator ID is padmin

VIOS command examples– lsdev: shows physical and virtual devices

– cfgdev: discovers newly added devices (such as new LUNs)

– mkvdev: creates virtual devices to make resources available to client partitions

• mkvdev –vdev hdisk1 –vadapter vhost0• hdisk1 is LUN to assign to IBM i; vhost0 is VSCSI server adapter in VIOS

for this IBM i partition VIOS commands to virtualize resources are well documented

IBM i View: Service Tools II

No concept of “IBM i protected” and “IBM i unprotected” LUNs with open storage Standard open storage LUNs created, attached to AIX/VIOS-type host Once virtualized by VIOS, LUNs will appear unprotected in IBM i LUNs should not be mirrored in IBM (already protected on SAN) LUNs assigned to ASPs/IASPs as any other disk

IBM i View: Operating System

Type of virtualized disk is always 6B22 (same as when IBM i is hosting IBM i) Size does not have to match physical disk unit sizes Supported sizes for LUNs through VIOS are 160MB – 2TB

IVM vs. HMC Management: IVM

Browser-based LPAR and virtualization interface Included with VIOS, but VIOS can be used without managing system with IVM Supported on BladeCenter JS12/JS22, IBM Power 520, 550, 560 (not 570 or 595) Allows GUI management of resources virtualized by VIOS When system is IVM-managed, IBM i partitions must use only virtual resources VIOS must have partition ID = 1 System is managed either by IVM or HMC

IVM vs. HMC Management: HMC

Browser-based LPAR interface Supported on all IBM Power servers (not supported on BladeCenter JS12 or JS22) IBM i partitions can use a mix or virtual and physical resources GUI for management of VIOS resources not available (IVM), must use VIOS command line

Dual-hosting and MPIO

IBM i Client LPARs have a dependency on VIOS– VIOS must be running

– VIOS must not be running in service (single-user) mode

When will client LPAR be affected?– Scheduled maintenance

– Hardware upgrades

– Fix Packs

– Release upgrades

– Unplanned downtime

Consider using 2 VIOS LPARs

512B AIX/VIOS LUNs

Duplicate single VIOS environment (shown here)

– Virtual SCSI client/server adapter pair

– Separate set of LUNs in 2nd VIOS

– Same size and number of LUNs

Adapter-level mirroring between 2 sets of disk used in client LPAR

– Mirroring between virtual SCSI client adapters

Client can withstand failure or scheduled downtime in either host

Can be used for multiple clients

Weigh against cost

Backups for IBM i as Client of VIOS

Simplest approach: Regular Tape Backup– Mixing of virtual and direct resources in IBM i client *is* supported

• Does not apply to Power blade environment– Your Choice of direct-attach, SAN-attach, or DLPAR tape sharing

Other backup solutions exist– IBM i save to virtual tape IMGCLG; FTP IMGCLG files to another IBM i partition

– IBM i save to virtual optical IMGCLG, FTP images to VIOS or another IBM i

– IBM i save to file-backed virtual optical in VIOS; VIOS TSM client save over network

– IBM i save to file-backed virtual optical in VIOS; FlashCopy VIOS virtual media LUNs and attach to 2nd VIOS

– FlashCopy (full copy) VIOS LUNs assigned to IBM i; bring up separate IBM i partition under VIOS from copy

– Replicate VIOS LUNs assigned to IBM i; bring up separate IBM i partition under VIOS from copy
