MMUN
Heated debates, unforeseen predicaments, enthusiasm and memorable moments were
all encountered during this year’s Mashrek Model United Nations Conference 2011. Mashrek Model United Nations was held for the 9th year in a row, with even more prosperity and success than the previous years. It is fair to say that every participant in MMUN left with enhanced skills, unforgettable memories and an extraordinary experience to share in the future .
Economical and social council (ECOSOC), which was initiated last year, was held for the second year by the efforts and persistence of Mashrek students. Both the ECOSOC and the General Assembly tackled issues that stimulated the minds of people globally and locally in the past few months. Students were highly interested in researching and addressing this year’s topics due to recent occurrences within our region, starting from the Arab Spring and the Palestinian-Israeli Conflict in the General Assembly, in addition to establishing a pollution-free environment. However in the ECOSOC the debates were heated under different issues concerning discrimination against women, the economic and social repercussion of the Israeli occupation as well as enhancing the economic status worldwide by the Global Jobs Pact.
Merging and Lobbying on November 23rd marked the starting point of the conference. On this day, the students’ efforts and dedication towards presenting the precise views of their respective countries were clearly shown, as the merging and lobbying day was at its utmost success and fruitfulness. Students who formed resolutions confidently discussed their plans and encouraged other countries to join them towards solving the different issues at hand. Having solid background knowledge, students were intelligent enough to sign with their allies, ending the day with two
considerable resolutions for each topic ready to be discussed during the following session in the next few days. Every single participant waited with anticipation and eagerness to carry out the debates.
The opening ceremony of the MMUN 2011 took place the next day, indicating the beginning of another fruitful day. We were truly esteemed to welcome Ms. Rana Sabbagh, a well-known journalist who gave
an insightful opening speech about the press and media nowadays and whether our trust in the media was in its place. It is fair to say that the speech we heard opened our eyes and widened our perspectives towards the issues we constantly face in our reality. The opening speeches of the delegates of both the General Assembly and the ECOSOC were attuned to the guest speaker’s speech. As soon as the delegates presented their speeches, the first session was launched with high expectations. The delegates of USA and Iran both presented their resolutions, while the house witnessed intense debates between the two parties. The conference became even closer to reality when the delegate of Iran and his allies stormed out of the house while the delegate of USA discussed her resolution, portraying a real event in the actual UN General Assembly. The USA resolution passed, while the resolution of Iran unfortunately did not. In the ECOSOC, different delegates of the same countries, USA and Iran were also competing, ending with the same result as the GA, which passed the resolution of the US. What was really worth taking note of was the great participation of the younger delegates, especially the newcomers. Unlike each year, young students showed remarkable preparation and enthusiasm by asking numerous questions and replying carefully to other delegates, which contributed greatly to the conference’s success.
The Palestinian-Israeli Conflict is a subject of great concern to all and this was shown tremendously during the debates on the second topic in the GA. For the first time in the history of the MMUN, Palestine was allowed to write a resolution. Challenged by Israel, it fueled extreme and intense arguments, in which every delegate in the House was a part of .This was evident throughout the entire session. The resolution of PNA passed with
HeateD DeBatesBy: Rasha Gammoh & Nehaya Al Jafari
clear majority; however, suggestions of Veto came to life, angering the delegate of PNA and leading to another storm out worth mentioning. Luckily, the Veto was not used and the resolution of PNA was not opposed. In the ECOSOC, the delegates of UK and the delegate of Canada presented two resolutions. The resolution of UK passed after many deliberations and disputes.
The following day was the hands on day, as it goes without mentioning that community and service is a part of Mashrek International School. This year, we visited a deer conservation facility, where different jobs were prepared for us. We built a fence out of nothing, created fade for the deer and painted an old house as well. Afterwards, our group had lunch at a humble restaurant, where we all bonded and strengthened our relationships. It was an absolutely productive day, full of hard work and fun moments too.
On the final day of this incredible conference, the last topic was discussed and debated. The UK presented a passing resolution against Germany in the GA and UAE ironically won against Ukraine in the issue of discrimination against women. Meanwhile, the Chair announced a crisis in the GA, where Hasan Nasr-Allah was supposedly assassinated by Israel and the Iranian military entered Syria. Each party addressed and defended their position, while chaos and intense disputes were taking place in the house. Yet, laughter and sarcasm were also present in this part of the conference, as the countries supported each other in humorous ways. Finally, the Closing Ceremony soon began and we were honored to welcome another distinguished guest speaker, Dr. Mousa Shtewi. We were addressed with the issue of gender discrimination and the organization of SIDAW , which play a huge role in the protection of women’s rights.
Finally, we all attended a party that officially announced the end of the conference. The party was amazing and extremely amusing marking the end of this wonderful experience.
Of course, the MMUN participants would like to express their gratitude to their schoolmates, Mohammad Al Khalili and Safi Nazzal, who kindly volunteered to be the photographers for our MMUN Conference.

On Wednesday November 30th of this school year, Mashrek International School’s Second
Youth For Change Event was held, with a timespan of one school day for the discussion of ending violence against helpless children. The basic idea of this event is allowing the youth of this school to understand their capabilities and accept their peers’ ideas on the topic at hand ,while adding their own touch into the brainstorm. The main issues in concern were: child labor, physical and psychological abuse of elders and peers and discrimination against the female gender, focusing especially on the youth of the female gender.
As part of the Middle Years Program (MYP) application, the events of this day were all under the umbrella of the Areas of Interactions that build our understanding of concepts into tangible products of creativity. The five Areas of Interaction at play were : environments, human ingenuity, community and service, health and social education and ATL.
Students of both grades 8 and 9 participated in the learning experience of this topic under a variety of projects and events, whereas other `Middle School classes were privileged to observe and learn from the presentations. Prior to the event, students were introduced to the topic and the event through the advisory sessions and language classes. Students watched videos, discussed the matter, created the consequence wheel and prepared their inquiries about the topic, to interact with the guest speaker on the day of the event.
The event was divided into three main parts: preparation and morning session (awareness),activities (action), celebration and reflection.
For the morning session, the students were divided into groups, with supervisors and team leaders. Students were introduced to games and ice breakers that evolved their team spirit, joint enthusiasm and individual willingness of participation as what could be described to be the perfect start to the day. A guest speaker presentation and Q&A session on the subject took place afterwards. This gave an opportunity to the participants to deeply understand more deeply the subject at hand.
After the morning session, students headed to their activity rooms in order to fulfill what was requested of them. Different groups were under different areas of interaction and subject titles

,which widened the event into a broader concept and understanding of the ideas concerning the subject of child abuse in all its different shades. The various activities based on this subject were arts, drama production, slogans and posters, broadcasts, mini workshops, social media presentations, children’s rights collages, sports competitions and dance choreographies.
At the celebration, students joined in a bonding experience through a dance that took place in front of the theatre, helping them digest this event properly. The individual groups then presented what they had achieved during this fruitful event, and what they had understood from this day. Reflections were collected from each student as an experience to truly visualize each individual effect of the day on participants. Clearly, this Youth for Change event was a successful experience, to spread awareness, and most importantly to induce humanity within the early ages.

Mashrek’s Youth
A wise man once said: “Children are the living message we send to a time we will not see.”
Principals and Teachers of Mashrek International School have faith in each child occupying a seat in a classroom; therefore, with the participation of the Senior school students, an event entitled ‘‘International Day”was created for Kindergarten and first grade students.
The International Day was held at the Mashrek Kindergarten. The main objective of this event was to devolop the knowledge of Mashrek’s children, and enhance their vision of other cultures. They got a picture of other countries and how they differ from the culture we live in. Furthermore, the event depicted an excellent mixture of societies; there were countries from the Far East such as
Philippines, from the Middle East such as Palestine and Jordan, from Europe such as England and from North America such as Canada.
Moreover, juniors and seniors took part in this event, as representatives of the countries’ and they did a splendid job in presenting the information, and hosting parents who attended this occasion. In addition to that,Khaled Abu Amro an IB1 student, was in charge of the participants. He organized the shifts and showed great hospitability to the different groups who attended.
Additionally, some students helped parents in presenting some countries. India for example, was presented by two Indian parents and their five year old daughter; the parents talked about the main
features of the Indian culture and then the little girl performed an Indian dance. Kindergarten and Primary School students found this idea very entertaining.
As for the teachers’ cooperation, they were very accommodating by helping Senior School students in organizing the booths and they have also helped in organizing the classes used for the presentations. Not to forget, the KG Principal Mrs. Tamara Majali was there to welcome the parents along with the School’s Principal, Dr. Hana Malhas.
Finally, Mashrek International School’s family is looking forward to more of these effective events in order to widen the horizons of our children and to produce a productive generation with the attitudes of tolerance and acceptance.

IBDP
3 days, 2 nights, 300 kilometers away from home, 56 students, 10 supervisors and 2 challenging
adventures. On Thursday, 29th of October, at 8 am, 56 students from IB1 gathered at the main court, excited for the trip. We were divided into two jet buses that headed to the same direction, Al Shobak. In 4 hours, we reached our destination. The weather was moderately hot, fortunately not very sunny. We went out of the buses and awaited Abuloaf, the Head Supervisor to tell us about our journey. We walked around 22 kilometers on sand, water, and rocks. On our way ,we found a dead fox, we kissed crabs and rolled in water full of algae.
The second day was much more challenging, we
woke up at 7am, had breakfast, did some morning
exercises and then headed to our starting point, from where we began walking the 25 kilometers we had ahead of us. We were the first school to go on this risky adventure. During the first 3 hours, we hiked through a mountain of steep roads and moving rocks. It was a difficult challenge, but it was worth it. Upon reaching the end of the mountain, everyone was exhausted and we ran out of water. Surprisingly , we still had 18 kilometers ahead!
During the walks on the first and second day, we were walking in different groups, however, after dinner we all sat together and stayed up late playing games all night, and creating unforgettable memories. On our third and last day, we woke up at 6am to go to an old prison nearby, and to land down its wall. On our way home ,we stopped at a café. We were all exhausted, our feet were sore, we were very sleepy and messy too. However, we still managed to pull ourselves together and stand by each other. EVERYONE in the café, got up, danced, clapped and cherished the moment. The expedition was a once in a lifetime experience that brought us all together and taught us a lot of new things; a journey that gave us an opportunity
to become closer to each other, to open up and
to create worthwhile memories . The best thing
about this trip was that we were far away from our
daily routines, away from comfortable couches,
away from TVs, laptops, technology and all what
we are used to. Yet, it was truly an expedition to
remember.
Some enjoyed the challenges, while others
could not handle the toughness of the adventures.
Nevertheless, it was a wonderful experience for all,
Ms. Christine Ziadat- “The expedition took the
students on a personal development journey that
helped them shape their attitudes and opinions
and understand different cultures by actively
taking part in them, as well as providing interesting
situation to be as one whole family .”

Every year, grade 12 IBDP students surprise
and impress us with their creativity in their
Group 4 Project. This year, the seniors worked
really hard on presenting the scientific knowledge
they possessed through entertaining and creative
means. They have ’50 Years From Now’ as their
focal theme. They focused on the chosen theme
through the lens of three sciences: Biology,
Chemistry, and Physics.
This year, The students of Group 4 Project
were divided into two sections that
distinguished their display: the first section of
students exhibited their projects in different
booths, using their laptops to show power
points and videos, as well as cardboards and
information displayed on boards. However,
the second section presented their work by
different means; they demonstrated their
project in live short sketches and recorded
ones.
By: Sarah Al Hussein
All attendees including parents, teachers, and
students, benefited from the astonishing scientific
information that the Group 4 Project provided.
They revealed some shocking facts about how
the world would change or improve in 50 years
biologically, physically, and chemically.

In & Out
Eight students in pairs participated in the “I Know Business” Competition that
took place on November 18th, 2011. After each group prepared their own project; which was a business plan concept that could be invested in, they gathered to present their projects to college students who were marked as “investors”. The competition was practically more like reality, as each business plan was “supposedly” registered at the Ministry. Then with an approval of an investor, an imaginary cheque was added into the bank account, which was considered to be points for the team, along with points from the investors’ feedback. Fortunately, three groups out of
four made it out of the first twenty groups in the competition. One group; who were Marwan Hattar and Khalid Abu-Amro were ranked as the fourth winners. “For me, it was a satisfying beneficial experience to participate in this competition, as I do not take subjects containing any material to come up with roots of a business idea, but my partner and I managed to create an acceptable project, which at least came to be one the first twenty groups” –Rita Akroush reflected.
Being the first students to take the IB Theatre Course is not easy. There is a lot of pressure
on us to make this course as successful as possible. 14/11/2011 was the date for our first production. This performance was important to all of us ,since it was the first step towards creating bigger and more successful productions in the upcoming two years.
For our first performance ,Mr. Antony our theatre teacher, decided to take us back to the origin of theatre, when no set up lights or props were used. The performance relied completely on the actors’ ability to deliver the right feelings and the message to the audience.
We were five performers and each one of us picked two contrasting monologues of our own choice and worked hard to create a character, then bring it to life on stage. As for me, I chose monologues with characters that are very far away from the real me, one of the monologues was called: “Cold Blooded Murderer” and the other one was a monologue from a famous play called “Every Good Boy Deserves A Favor”. Personally, my favorite part while being on stage is when I looked into the eyes
of an audience member and I saw him/her affected by what I was performing, it is truly an amazing feeling. Throughout the performance of the other girls, I did not look at them because I knew they were doing a great job Instead, I enjoyed observing the effect of the words coming out of the actors on the audience themselves and how each person reacted to them in their own way.
This was truly an amazing experience and I enjoyed it a lot. Here is what Mr. Antony had to say about our first production: “It was excellent to see all of grade 11, teachers, I.B. Coordinators and Principals at the outdoor amphitheatre to support the first production ever by Mashrek Theatre Diploma Students. We managed to hold off inclement weather and all that interfered with the show was a soft breeze, which united the performers and audience in a shared space, at a shared moment. As a theatre teacher, all you can do is prepare your students as best you can, but it is up to the performers themselves whether they seize the moment or wilt under the pressure! It was a very proud moment for me to see these young women speaking in character with confidence and power; a wonderful beginning to what should be a very enriching I.B. Program.”

Mashrek’s first Student Led Conferences were held on Thursday, on November
3rd for MYP students. Nerves began rattling as students approached the Mashrek doors afraid of what was awaiting them inside. For the first time, students were required to evaluate themselves in the subjects they were currently taking. This evaluation challenged the students into reflecting upon their intellect as learners and their behavior as students. They were required to determine their strengths and weaknesses in their subjects and then discuss them with their parents.
Two students from each class worked on organizing their classmates’ portfolios consisting of the tasks given in every subject ,including the teacher’s reflections. Every student was assigned to 4 teachers, and spent 5 minutes with each. In these five minutes the students were required to reflect on their progress in the subject. They were also asked to talk about a subject of their
own choice, evaluating their work in that area. The portfolio was important overall, because it held the tasks of the students and the teachers’ reflections, both vital for a successful evaluation.
Holding student led conferences for the first time, proved to be effective in time management for both parents and teachers. The parents loved the fact that meetings with the teachers were scheduled, since it allowed them to arrive and leave the school at specific times, whereas the normal conferences required parents to wait in long lines just to have a few words with every single teacher, which was both exhausting and annoying. Parents did not like the fact that they were unable to talk with all the teachers that taught their son/daughter.
Overall the conference was effective in challenging the students to evaluate their abilities in a variety of subjects.

Success is not the key to happiness. Happiness is the key to success. If you love what you
are doing, you will be successful.”- Herman Cain.
Being happy does not depend on what you have or what you do... well, it really depends on what we think and believe in. Happiness is defined as a state of well-being and contentment. The accomplishments of any mother and father depend on providing a positive environment for their future family. Every girl has the motherly feelings growing in her as she grows up, and every man has the instinctive feelings of fatherhood. What do you think are the secrets of having a truly happy family?
The truth is happy families have cranky kids, messy houses and money struggles, just like everyone else. Underneath all of that, they have a core of contentment that sustains them through all of life’s turbulences. Being happy as a family is something deeper than simply having fun together or feeling the immediate euphoria of a
joyful event ,like opening presents on Christmas morning. “A happy family is a family that has a deep sense of meaning and purpose in their lives.”-Anonymous.
They say happy families know who they are; when your family agrees on its core values and consistently lives by those standards you’ll build a stronger family identity and reduce the usual conflicts. Defining your values as one big family cannot only reinforce a lot of the qualities that brought you together, but it can also help steer you in times when you feel conflict. Knowing that you prioritize new experiences; for example, you might decide to pull the kids out of school for a special family trip, while another family who values education over everything else would never consider scheduling a vacation during the school year. Always remember that an hour or a joyful moment spent with your family is worth ages of an ordinary, dull life. Although the grown-ups in the house should drive the discussion, children can also play a part
in framing your family’s ideals. They can also be trusted on part of the family responsibilities. When you depend on them and formulate them to make decisions that will affect your plan of the day; you’ll be helping them to build and formulize their well balanced and confident personality with excellent leadership. Ask them what they like to do and what they dislike, make them feel that they are a part of the family and not taking into consideration how old or young they are. Show your family the love that was shared in yours, and if not, give them the love and the faith you missed in your family and the way you wanted to be treated. Show them love: care, self confidence, high self esteem, faith, that you believe in them, security, comfortable atmosphere, valuable time and memorable moments. Be a risk taker, well balanced, open minded and caring; and you’ll be having at least the basics of a true happy family that you always wished for.

She slowly approached the poison
That lay on top of the table.
With her first step
A black body attacked her vulnerable will.
Another step,
It began slowly preying
On the weak corners of her mind
She tried to resist
But the body was stronger
He moved with his long black legs
From one corner of her mind to the other
And spread his strings.
With every step he weakened her
And strengthened within her the desire
Of embracing what would only destroy her.
With every second
And with every step
She grew weaker and weaker
And her weakness only fueled his strength.
She reached the table
He has already taken over her
He had conquered her mind
Her will
And part of her had forever been lost.

As fine as poetry might seem...The rhythm reflects nothing but agony and anguish. As sweet as the tone might be...The voices are as subtle as souls probing for mischief.Developing physical migraines that overwhelm dead before alive. Therefore, souls thrive as they make their way to final judgment.Torment isn’t death, it is seeking death though there›s a pulse present.Through the confines of knowledge we seem to fall underline. Can our failure be due to our ignorance and lack of patience?Or maybe it’s because we are out of place on this earth? We are isolated in a gap between homelands and homesOnly to figure out a heart full of carelessness and a majority of traitors.A stranded man with a legless bottom living to limp. His left foot is tarnished and filled with chunks of glass and ammo.He escapes on feet, or on foot some would say.He vigorously breathes and tries to balance his pose. Such a poor case but as he traps himself at the boarders. He is left with an unstamped passport at a window of illusion. How heartless is time, revolving around us until we curse its presence. Raised to praise what I can’t witness and I call it blind belief.God is the only exception, but is this inferiority holy? The man is isolated in a gap between his home and his oppressor.Only to figure out a heart full of sorrow and pictures of his beloved before the pressure.Coming to grits that he is now aware of what he needs. He desires currency, happiness and a heart that doesn’t bleed. His reason was decent, motivated by the pain he witnessed. He relates himself to a stranger that doesn’t offer any candy to children. His heart is an infant, raised to possess a heart full of
innocence. But he still feels lost in his own country, he is an immigrant.Brave harts and godly defying acts they put up...They are aware of nothing but slaughter, torture, and sell outs...They roam to kill and kill to live...They are enslaved by the flag that offers more...They are isolated in a gap between flags that force peace in truce...Only to figure out the best contract entitled the richest minute man.Can it be war? Can it be gore? Or is it the predicament we placed ourselves in?I fear only but holiness my eyes never saw, and all your weapons don’t scare me.Hot blooded and ready for immortality as soon as it arrives.I have more than 12 million siblings in graves, mudded and applauding my arrival. The legless man returned naked to his home after being accused with treason. He was stoned to death and mortified by the sounds of pain he brought upon his people. The minute men turned on each other and fought it out until blood spilled. Most got killed, others directly referred to their accounts in Sweden and Brazil. But the question is unanswered when it’s asked to us.Where are we? Will we allow gloomy fear enter our hearts?Or did we welcome it in already?I rather fall helpless in the gap and land in nothing but gushers of endless struggleThen watch my people turn to minute men or legless brothers. That only seem to land in a cage or in a gutter. So the next time you read this, ask yourself this question...Is material worth being persecuted as a genetic terrorist?

When a land is controlled by military force, it is not ‘disputed’, it is OCCUPIED. When
people fight the OCCUPIER, it is not ‘terrorism’, it is RESISTANCE. When an occupation bombs cities, it is not ‘self-defense’, it is CRIMINAL. When a regime SEPERATES, SEGREGATES, and DISCRIMINATES, It is not a ‘democracy’, it is APARTHEID…Call it what it really is and do not get your terms mixed up…Because once we start mixing up our terms, then this is when the foremost problem strikes.
Israeli Apartheid Week is an international series of events held in cities and campuses all over the world. This year will be the 8th consecutive year, with events taking place in March. That week’s events include lectures, multimedia events, cultural performances, film screenings, demonstrations and much more. In other words, we will be telling the world about the condemnation of all the defenseless Palestinians who die as martyrs every day, and till their last breath, they pray that God would overwhelm them with power and allow them to defeat Israel and win back their land.
Our responsibility comes here as citizens of the Arab world, as students who are cultivated to be responsible, productive citizens in their country and
the whole world as well. We are students who are
nurtured to speak of what we think is right, and to
stand up for our principles and beliefs, abandoning our
fears. We must play our part in this abounding week;
we must contribute to this chorus of international
opposition to Israeli apartheid. We must support
in achieving our aim as anti-Zionists; to bolster
support for the BDS campaign in accordance with
the demands outlined in the July 2005 Statement:
full equality for Arab-Palestinian citizens of Israel, an
end to the occupation and colonization of all Arab
lands – including the Golan Heights, the Occupied
West Bank with East Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip
– and dismantling the Wall, and the protection of
Palestinian refugees’ right to return to their homes
and properties as stipulated in the U.N. resolution 194.
In previous years IAW has played an important role
in raising awareness and disseminating information
about Zionism, the Palestinian Liberation Struggle
and its similarities with the indigenous sovereignty
struggle in North America and the South African
Anti-Apartheid movement. Let us join in making this
a year of struggle against apartheid and fight for
justice, equality and peace.

Here & There
Nowadays, alternative energy resources are being intensively resorted by various
countries of the world, as it has become a fact that the current energy resources we depend on will eventually come to an end. One of the alternative energy recourses that the world has come to rely on is nuclear energy. Surprisingly, the idea of using this method to attain energy is now being exposed to Jordanian people by the recent proposals of establishing a nuclear energy program in Jordan.
There are several reasons behind the suggestions being made lately; as there has been a growing demand on energy, while at the same time energy costs are significantly increasing, not to mention the fact that Jordan lacks conventional energy resources. Hence, a nuclear energy program might seem a suitable solution to these challenges that our country is critically confronted with. This is because there’s no doubt that nuclear energy emits a very low percentage of greenhouse gases and yields great deals of energy from a small amount of matter in addition to many other advantages.
However, there is a strong belief by some that such
a program is considered a double edged sword
that can cause more harm than benefit, especially
in a country like Jordan. This is because not only
do we not have a proper funding for such a huge
program but we also we lack the human resources
and requirements needed for such a commitment.
Meaning, if an extremely simple procedure were to
go wrong in any way, its effect would be catastrophic.
Different points of views regarding this issue are
evidently noted everywhere and since we resemble
a huge proportion of Jordan, we should have an
opinion to be taken into consideration. Read about
this program and establish full awareness of it ,in
order to decide on your position towards it. If this
program were to disagree with your thoughts, do
something about it; spread the word, sign one of the
thousands protesting documents that are currently
distributed and join organizations and groups that
are working everyday to put a stop to what could
potentially be a drastic change in the life we witness
today.

Waving goodbye to the beach, sun and sand was difficult as summer was gone, but the good news is; the welcome of a new season for some windy fall/winter fashion, and the introduction of new trends to update your fashion wardrobe!
I must say if we ladies need more excuses to shop; then one of them is definitely the styles and trends of fall/winter 2011-2012. So go on and start shopping for your favorite trendy fabrics and prints, tops and jackets, shoes, and bags! So what’s really in for this season?
Search for prints of leopard, polka dots, and sequins; whether it’s a top, blouse, a dress or a cardigan and sometimes shoes, these prints are definitely the current on the runway! What’s at the moment too is tweed, fine-looking on coats and dresses!
Again it’s all about Knits, knits, and knits! Knits are not only a trend; they give warm sensations once worn whether it’s a cardigan or a striking top! Favorite colors of knits include green and its dark, purple, the dark blues, red, camel, and as always black or you can even check the printed colored knits!
Anything Fur! So get ready to be more selective in picking your new favorite fur vest, fur boots or/and fur jacket!
Blazers; coming back for another season, blazers make the outfit perfect over a fashionable blouse! There are many chic styles and colors for blazers; try the jersey blazer, the formal blazer, and many others picking your favorite color whether it’s black, gray, dark green, navy or even fuchsia!
Flared Jeans; go on and try on a flared jeans, they’re in again, looking perfect topped with heels, and ended with a fashionable heels for a perfect afternoon outfit!
Bags; every season adds a new style or color of bags! For this one; find your perfect choice of bag focusing on the classy camel, chic green, hip orange and stylish yellow!
Shoes; of course when its winter it’s all about boots; so try on your over-the-knee, rain boots, and again your fur boots! Yet, that doesn’t mean eliminating heels and flats; heeled loafers, pumps, and glittery flats and heels are in for the season!
Other items always repetitive in fashion include; that little black dress, formal pants, elegant dark jeans, pencil skirts, cozy pullover sweaters, varied colored cardigans, a trench coat, and comfortable classic flats.
So what are you waiting for ladies? It’s definitely time for some shopping, no?

Class of 2012By : Nehaya Al Jafari
Four years ago, Class of 2012 stepped into Senior School, being three years away from graduation.
Four years ago they couldn’t wait to get older.
Three years ago, they marched into the Senior School with potential towards the coming years.
Three years ago they couldn’t wait to get older.
Two years ago, a year away from being seniors, they began to grow up. They found out where they belong.
Two years ago, they still couldn’t wait to get older.
Now, they finally realized what is it like to grow up and get older, they realized that time has slipped away and soon they’ll be saying goodbye to all their friends, teachers and school. Maybe for a short time, maybe forever. Soon they’ll graduate, sit with everyone for the last time, and live their last moments of school. Now, they’ll recognize how it feels to leave everything behind and start a new life, and now they’ll wish they could be young again; but it’s time to say: “Class of 2012, you’re almost there!!”

Ala’a Abdo
To me, in these four years of Senior school Mashrek has become a family rather than a school. I learned a lot, I learned how to be independent and responsible, I grew attached to the school and it became my second home. All the laughter and memories we shared with friends and teachers are very valuable to me and I thank each and every person I met in Senior school from teachers that taught me, to students I met, because without them I would have never become the person I am today.

An interesting interview with Dr. Sahar Jabaji,
IB’s Biology (higher level) teacher that plainly
stated:
“A plan for students to spend free hours is not
necessarily the library...Monopoly?! Board games?!”
We the staff of the Oracle were intrigued to interview
Mrs. Sahar because according to most students she
is very outgoing and popular. We managed to get an
opportunity to interview Dr. Sahar and see what she
had to say.
A glimpse of Mrs. Sahar’s Personal Life:
Dr. Sahar came to Jordan 26 years ago after she fell
in love with a Jordanian. She graduated from The
American University of Beirut (AUB) in the year of
1985. She studied Medicine but wasn’t able to pursue
a career in the field. Now, Dr. Sahar is the mother of
2 grown ups, a boy and a girl. Five years of staying at
home, eventually had Dr. Sahar teaching and finally
joining her family at Mashrek International School in
2006.
On a personal note, allow us to ask you:
What’s the thing that you like most about your
personality?
“Lots of things” [giggles] “Being friendly and I do
like it”. Being proud of who you are reflects on the
personality; that’s why you have to love yourself and
whatever comes along with it”
We once passed by and saw this sign on the board:
صكوتك” “عرينا
What made you put this here?
[Laughs] “My son bought it” and then when I saw
it, I took it and placed it at the door so that people
passing by would stay quiet at first but I knew no one
saw it because I kept the door opened so I placed it
inside on the board”
On a professional note, what is the relation between
you, the school and whatever comes along with it?
This following question tackles both professional and
personal aspects:
How do you feel about being an IB examiner?
“Well, I’ve been an examiner for three years and it
helps a lot. Being an examiner is beneficial for both
sides; being well trained helps in the teaching process
and so it helps the students because I am familiar
with the IB’s demands and so that’s what the students
get, they develop a way to answer according to the IB
standards and I tell the students what the IB requires
exactly. That’s why it’s a privilege”
We asked one of the students that had the privilege
of being taught by you, what is the best thing in the
Biology class and his answer was that you act.
Can you tell us about it and why you chose to do so ?
“Teaching should be fun, there’s a quote that says,
“Tell me, ill forget, show me, I may remember; involve
me, I will remember” That’s why learning through
fun is better than only giving lectures. By acting and
doing things that the students don’t expect, they
will memorize better and they will be excited about
the class and through this they would gain more
IntervIew wItH Dr. saHar jaBajI By: Marah Diken
knowledge”
What is the best way to communicate with students
according to you?
“By treating them like adults. When students are
treated like kids they act like kids, but when you treat
them like adults they develop respect and start acting
like adults”
Why do you like Mashrek?
“I spend half of my time with the students and the
other half with the teachers. The students are very well
behaved young men and women and my relationship
with the students exceeds a teacher-student relation,
it’s more of a mother- daughter/son relation. While
with the teachers we are like a family and a team. We
help each other and there’s no jealousy between the
teachers that is what brings us together and creates
special bonds”
And our final question will be:
If you had the chance and the authority to change
something in the school, what would it be?
“I would give the IB students a place to stay in
when they have free periods and I would not tell
them to go to the library; this free period would be
taken to relieve the student from studying through
not spending aimlessly but have a room with games
that helps develop the brain and other skills and do
something productive, from a ping pong table, to
board games like Monopoly”
Thank you it has been a pleasure to talking to you
The year 2011 was the birth of a new identity
for our Mashrek athletic teams. All teams
including Basketball, Football, Volleyball,
etc... were awarded the name of Mashrek
Tigers.
A new uniform was introduced and designed
for the Tigers; a navy blue sweatshirt for
the cold days with the Tiger logo in the
middle, navy blue t-shirt and shorts with
a green and a white stripe and on the back
of the t-shirt there is the TIGERS print and
the name and number of the player.
Our school athletes were thrilled with
the new uniform. It was a large leap in the
development of our teams. The new uniform has
By: Abdullah Sheqem
two advantages over the old one. First of all, the
kind of material used is more comfortable and
more suitable for athletic activities. Moreover,
the new uniforms have adopted the new identity
of the Tigers, due to the fact that the Tigers logo
is printed on the T-shirt rather than the school’s
logo.
I think that the new identity and uniform will
give our athletes a spirit of loyalty to the school
and will enhance their performance. It will also
encourage them to train harder and achieve more.

As we address our lives everyday
upon waking up, we wonder, how
will the day turn out to be? Will I discover
anything new? These questions certainly are
what approach my mind when I wake up.
What is the problem with most people? Is it
the “race”? Is it our work? Is it our financial
issues? Or maybe it’s our ambition that is
blinding us from the truth? But what is the
truth? The dictionary use of the word truth
is whatever’s lying beneath real events, seen
or concluded. People might have the truth
right across their rooms but don’t want to
address it, fearing it and its demands. The
truth is disguised now-a-days. The truth
used to be your mother’s delicate looks when
you are suffering from a dangerous injury or
a scratch. But how can you value that look
the way you used to when you were a child
now that your biggest concern is money or
looks? The truth used to be your father’s hard
earned money spent on some groceries which
are often thrown away at the end of the
month. But how can you value your father’s
effort if you are blinded by your addiction to
music, television, etc… The truth used to be
very useful when we were infants. We used to
believe the ‘truth’ even when it wasn’t true.
How can you believe the truth now that you’re
bewildered by the outside world. The truth
was vandalized when we allowed ourselves to
escape it. The truth lies in front of you, but
you don’t want to grasp it. The truth is now
the root of all evil to powerful minorities. The
truth is everything that is not spoken in any
event on the television, the truth is what you
know but don’t want to recognize, the truth
is the little kid that went to get bread and
never came back, and if he did make it home,
the truth is that his house was demolished in
ten minutes. What is the truth? It is simply
nothing to them. The truth is the primary goal
we were brought up to pursue. How can you
find yourself when you can’t separate right
from wrong, images from illusions, lies from
the truth, and opinions from facts? The next
generation is us, or as believed the promised
ones. Although it may be the truth, I can’t
believe it anymore.

Middle East Tournament for Schools is a tournament for Volleyball that is held in Jordan annually, each year in a different school
with several schools participating from all over the Middle East. This year, METS was held in King’s Academy with IC Beirut, ACS Beirut, King’s Academy, and Mashrek International School participating. METS takes place on three consecutive days, most likely on weekends (Thursday, Friday and Saturday), each day approximately 12 hours per day.
Throughout those three productive days, we all left knowing one thing; that we are all one team; we win together, we lose together. We learned that putting our hands together in the center and screaming out “MASHREK” means that ALL of us will be cooperating and collaborating in order to reach the goal we set at the beginning which is winning first place with a high team spirit.
We played several games; some were easy and some were challenging. Some were played without even sweating and some we had to exceed our maximum effort in order to win. at times we fell and got injured, but still get back up and played keeping our team spirit.
Honestly, it was a tough tournament with challenges and difficulties that we did not imagine we would overcome. Eventually, each team player remembered their responsibility and gave in their maximum effort, and it was worth it. The Girls’ Volleyball Team won 1st place, and the Boys’ Volleyball Team won 3rd place with a sportsmanship that no one doubted.
This tournament was hosted by King’s Academy and it lasted for three days over the weekend. Altough we didnt achieve our goal of getting
the first place, this was a great experience of competition and teamwork especially that had the advantage of sharing this experience with schools from Jordan as well as Lebanon.
The young generation is ready to get their hopes up. Throughout the chess tournament, a sixth grade student achieved the second place
as he won each and every game in the tournament, qualifying him to the finals. However, he lost against one of the best players in Jordan. It was quite a challenge for him, but he kept his spirit up and he is learning from each and every mistake.
Each year, the Tigers Basketball Team shows a lot of developement compared to the year before. This year with the leadership of Coach
Fuad Ghazawi, they played with heart, concentration and team spirit. The Basketball Team played their first game against Universal School and won with a big difference , the result was 31-12.Moreover, Mashrek’s team won with 45-15 against Dar Al Arkam. Finally, the last game played was against the Orthodox School. Although the Tigers lost, they were determined to continue their path of improvements on a road full of achievements and victories.
This Track and Field Tournament was a success for both, the boys and the girls. The team spirit was extremely prevalent. The tournament
was held at Amman Baccalaureate School and the girls were aiming to achieve first place, but unfortunately, this was a great challenge and they did not earn it; they lost with a slight difference and achieved second.
As for the boys, we achieved the second place after a lot of hard work. This was an accomplishment that we have not earned for almost three years and this motivated us to work even harder to achieve first place next year.
