“Who could have ever anticipated this?” I’ve heard this said more times than I can count as our world continues to struggle with the COVID-19 pandemic. It seems like just a few weeks ago that everything was good. The economy was good. Circum-stances in the world were fairly stable. Baseball season was about to begin. Ann and I were anticipating a long-awaited trip to England to visit our daughter, Brittany, and her husband. And then, in the course of just a couple of weeks, everything changed. New words and phrases were added to my vocabulary that reflected new realities in my life: social distancing, wash for at least 20 seconds, stay-at-home

orders, etc. For each of us, the impact has been profound. Face-to-face encounters have become few and far between. Trips to the grocery store are now strategically planned in order to minimize the time spent on each aisle. Most business are closed and for those that are open, their hours are reduced. Take-out has become the only eat-out option, and church services - even Easter - are done online. The result is that life at the moment is unlike anything we’ve seen before. So how do we, as Christians, cope with this? Can God cause even this to be used for good (Romans 8:28)? Though confronted by the same difficulties, dangers and inconveniences that everyone is facing, as Christ-followers we have something many people lack - we have Faith! Faith that God will never leave or forsake us. Faith that God is in control even when we are not. Faith that God is standing beside us in these uncertain times to encourage, equip, and if necessary, carry us through to tomorrow, and the next day, and the next. Because of these truths, we genuinely can know a “peace that passes understanding” (Philippians 4:7) and live lives of calm and confidence when so much of the world is feeling anxiousness, uncertainty, and stress. But this sense of peace is not just for us. God desires that all would know Him (John 3:16) and that through Him and the working of the Holy Spirit in their lives (Galatians 5: 22-23), they too might experience a supernatural serenity while the rest of the world frets in worry and despair. I know that it is all of our prayer that this virus will quickly run its course and we can return to some form of normalcy. However, until that happens, may we look to The Light (Jn. 8:12) and be used as a light (Matthew 5:14-16) in a world desperate for direction and peace.

Ministry News

THANK YOU FOR GIVING! This past month has been unprecidented in many ways here at Calvary. As a church, we find ourselves having to “do church” very differently. We don’t get to meet together each week or see each other on a regular basis. One thing we have noticed though, is that this

Calvary family is FAITHFUL. Even though you could not be here to give in person, you stopped by or mailed in your gifts regularly. Giving for the month of March was only slightly below budget, and daily we saw offerings sent to us in the mail. THANK YOU, Calvary family, for your faithful giving to God’s church!

ONLINE GIVING IS HERE!!! We are excited to announce that we have launched a new mobile-friendly online giving option for our church. We have partnered with the company Rebel Give to provide a simple, safe and secure way to give to Calvary. After much research, we chose to go with Rebel Give because they do not charge transaction fees. (However, there ARE fees imposed by vendors – please keep this

in mind if you choose to give using a credit or debit card.) You can access the giving portal on our website from your computer, phone or tablet. Just look for this icon and click to get started! You can use your credit or debit card or have funds transferred directly from your bank account. And if you set up an account you can arrange a recurring weekly

or monthly gift to be given automatically. You can also see your giving history or update your payment methods easily. Be assured that just as our offering envelopes are private and confidential, all the information you provide for online giving is also secure. To be clear, Rebel Give does not charge any fees for the use of their service, how-ever, like many electronic financial transactions, there is a small fee imposed by the vendor (banks). If you use a credit or debit card, a 1.9% fee will be added to the amount of your gift. If you link your bank account, there is no fee at all! Note – if you would like to give to more than one fund (i.e.: General Fund and Fellow-ship Fund) please enter your total gift amount then select “Other”. A text box will allow you to provide a written explanation of how you want your gift to be divided. Questions? Contact our business manager, Tanya by calling the church office (503.363.9246) or sending an email to [email protected].

Birthdays

Direct Line to the Father

We affirm with absolute certainty that Almighty God answers prayer. The vast possibilities and the urgent necessity of

prayer lie in this stupendous fact that God hears and answers prayer. And God hears and answers all prayer. He hears

and answers every prayer, where the true conditions of praying are met. Either this

is so or it is not. If not, then is there nothing in prayer. Then prayer is but the

recitation of words, a mere verbal performance, an empty ceremony. Then prayer is an altogether useless exercise. But if what we have said is true, then are there vast possibilities in prayer. Then is it far reaching in its scope, and wide in its range. Then is it true that prayer can lay its hand upon Almighty God and move Him to do great and wonderful things.

The benefits, the possibilities and the necessity of prayer are not merely

subjective but are peculiarly objective in their character. Prayer aims at a definite

object. Prayer has a direct design in view. Prayer always has something

specific before the mind’s eye. There may be some subjective benefits which

accrue from praying, but this is altogether secondary and incidental.

Prayer always drives directly at an object and seeks to secure a desired end.

Prayer is asking, seeking and knocking at a door for something we have not, which we desire and which God has promised

to us.

Events

TNT is Family friendly, intergenerational and open to everyone! Currently this activity is scheduled to meet in May but may be suspended as a result of COVID_19 pandemic. Please contact Deb Grenz or Tod Scheler for additional information.

NATIONAL DAY OF PRAYER (Thursday May 7th, 6 pm) If ever our nation needed prayer, it is during this unprecedented health crisis as well as being a year in which we will be selecting new governmental leadership. As of this writing, it appears unlikely that the Oregon lockdown restrictions will have been lifted in order to allow us to gather in person for a time of prayer. However, this is too important for us to cancel or ignore. We are therefore going to do a Zoom prayer gathering on the 7th utilizing the advantages of modern technology. If you have never participated in a Zoom gathering, it involves your computer and shows pictures of the participants on your screen much like the opening credits did on the TV show “The Brady Bunch” (i.e. each person has a box). We will strive to keep this brief (approximately 45 minutes) but we strongly encourage you to join in this prayer event if at all possible. If you would like to participate, please let either Pastor Bret or Kate know so that we can email you the necessary information. If you are not able or comfortable joining us online, we would still encour-age you to pray on the 7th for our nation, its leaders, and our future direction as a country.
