July 2018 Dear Parishioners, Community Leaders and Business Owners, Recently, someone asked me about my memories of Hurricane Sandy. There are so many. One that I know I'll never forget was what happened in the parish hall at St. Mary's in the weeks following that wild night. How people came together in the name of just offering help to those in need. The hall became a hub for people to receive and offer assistance. Within days, the hall became filled with food, water, blankets, batteries...you name it. It also became a temporary house of prayer because of Sandy's damage to our church. They were tough days, but they were also special days. It was hard not to be inspired by the goodness of so many generous people. From those cold November mornings, a special group of people emerged offering to cook hot meals to the cold, tired and hungry residents of Long Beach. And, they've never stopped. Since those early Sandy days, the St. Mary's Soup Kitchen has steadily grown offering food and fellowship four days a week to the Long Beach community. I'm grateful for what they bring to our parish and I'd like you to join me in honoring their important work. On September 14th, St. Mary of the Isle will be gathering at the Sands Lido Beach for our annual Fall Dance. At last year's dance we started what, I hope, will become a great St. Mary's tradition. We honored the work of our Food Pantry. It was a great night! We hope to continue that tradition this year by thanking our Soup Kitchen Team. Although the roster of Soup Kitchen Volunteers is too long to list here, I would like to mention two of our honorees, Pete McCabe and Tom O'Brien, in recognition of the many hours they spend behind the stove and overseeing the whole crew. I can't imagine where we'd be without their presence. In conjunction with the Fall Dance and in an effort to raise funds to support and grow the many ministries offered to the community by St. Mary's, we are publishing a journal to honor the Soup Kitchen Volunteers. The proceeds from the journal will help continue the great work of the kitchen and Human Services Outreach as well as other ministries at St. Mary's. So, first, I am asking you to join us on September 14th at the Sand Lido Beach. I'm also requesting that you consider making a donation to our journal so that together we can continue God's work in our Long Beach community.
