11 Greater Kashmir SRINAGAR | August 16, 2014, Saturday Gunmen attack 2 airbases in Pakistan, 12 militants killed Karachi, Aug 15: Heavi- ly-armed Taliban suicide bombers today tried to storm two key airbases in Quetta, capital of Pakistan’s restive Balochistan province, but the attacks were foiled by secu- rity forces which killed 12 sus- pected Uzbek fighters. Officials said Samungli airbase, which is used by the Pakistan Air Force, and Khalid military airbase were the targets of the early morn- ing attacks, the third such incident in just two months. The attacks were launched before midnight by attackers armed with automatic weap- ons, grenades and wearing suicide vests, but the mili- tants failed to enter any of the airbase as the security was already on high alert, said a senior police official. “The police reacted timely and foiled both attempts,” he said on the incidents which took place 12 kilometres apart. Khalid airbase is located in the Cantonment area of Quetta in Nawakhali while the Samungli airbase is locat- ed on the outskirts of the city. Fourteen persons, includ- ing twelve security men, were also injured in the gun battle which lasted for nearly nine hours. Sarfaraz Bugti, the Home Minister Balochistan, said that security forces repulsed the attacks and heavy exchange of fire took place between the attacker and security forces. Military said both the air- bases in Quetta have been cleared. The Ghalib Mehsud faction of the outlawed Teh- rik-i- Taliban Pakistan (TTP) claimed responsibility for the attacks. “It is a revenge for the army’s killing of innocent people in North and South Waziristan,” said Ghalib Mehsud, who said he was a commander and spokesman for the Taliban wing respon- sible for training suicide bombers. “There will be more attacks in coming days,” he said. More than 20 huge explo- sions were heard during the search operation. Two militants blew them- selves up while trying to enter the airbases. Khan Wasey, a spokesman for Frontier Corps, said that the militants opened fire at the air bases and hurled grenades. They also fired seven rockets that landed in their premises. He said no damage was caused. Five militants were killed by security forces during the attack on the Samungli air base and seven others were killed at the Khalid Air Base. Security forces also detained five suspects in con- nection with the attack target- ing Samungli Air Base. A security official said the militants apparently tried to take advantage of the fact that since Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif visited Quetta and Ziarat yesterday, security would be lax in other areas. “But since the attack on the Karachi airport, security has been on red alert at all airports and airbases,” the official said. PTI Anti-govt protesters march on; shots fired at Imran Khan Islamabad/Lahore, Aug 15: Determined to oust Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, tens of thousands of protest- ers today marched towards the capital in two separate convoys as clashes erupted with opposi- tion leader Imran Khan claiming that ruling PML-N activists fired at his vehicle. Two opposition groups, led by cricketer-turned- politician Khan and Canada- based cleric Tahirul Qadri, plan to converge on Islamabad to press Sharif to call an early election lile over a year aſter his landslide victory in the polls. “The PML-N workers opened fire on my container (vehicle). If I was hit who could stop my party workers from reacting,” said Khan, the chief of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party. He urged his party workers to remain peaceful, saying if the martial law was imposed in the wake of the government’s actions his party would be blamed. “The government is blaming us for the Gujranwala incident. It will also blame us in case martial law is imposed on such acts of the government,” Khan said. Khan also presented video footage of PML-N work- ers aacking his vehicle. The footage showed PML-N work- ers pelting stones and shoes on his vehicle with those on board seen ducking. PTI spokesper- son Shireen Mazari said at least eight party workers were injured in clashes in Gujranwala. The anti-government protest- ers of both the groups plan to stage a sit-in in Islamabad to press their claims, at the end of a “long march” -- which set off on a 370-km journey to the country’s capital yesterday. Qadri has also unveiled the goals of his ‘revolution’ march, saying its fundamental purpose is to restore democracy and alle- viate poverty. Khan’s convoy had reached Gujranwala, 80 kilome- ters from Lahore, while Qadri’s convoy had reached Jehlum, 180 kilometers from Lahore, aſter 25 hours of journey. There were conflicting reports as to how the clash in Gujranwala started. Punjab Law Minister Rana Mashhood said the PTI workers aacked the office of the PML-N which led to the clash. “Our four workers have also been injured and we have closed all PML-N offices on the protest route. We have doubled the police force on the route of the long march of Mr Khan aſter this incident. We have also asked our party workers to stay calm,” Mashhood said.
