DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE 2018

CONTENTS

One of the joys in programming the Festival of the Sound is imagining the pleasures that summer will bring. Most of my planning takes place from november to February. Although it may be cold and blustery outside, my mind is fi lled with the warmth, music and friendships of the coming summer. As this year marks the centenary of the end of World War I, we are proud to present the world premiere of Sounding Thunder, a work honouring the local hero, Francis Pegahmagabow.

Since J.S. Bach has been revered for centuries by all the great composers, it seemed natural to have his Cello Suites followed by works of Mozart, Schubert, Dvorák, Brahms, Schumann and Debussy. I like to think that these composers would be happy to know that their music follows that of the great master.

The young piano star, Charles Richard-Hamelin, will be recording the two Chopin piano concertos this autumn with the Montreal Symphony. We are honoured to hear his interpretations and to give him the opportunity to prepare for the recordings as he performs the concertos in the version with string quartet.

We are expanding our Stockey young Artist program and have invited the national youth Orchestra of Canada for a day celebrating this iconic institution. In addition, the brilliant young jazz pianist, noah Franche-nolan completes our roster of Stockey young Artists.

Strings are central to chamber music so I asked the Penderecki String Quartet to curate some of their favourite works. Thanks to the quartet members for the wonderful programs they have created for the Festival.

Great classical composers have often been inspired by folk music. We are happy to add a weekend celebrating this important genre.

There is so much more. I invite you to look through our offerings to fi nd music to inspire, challenge and entertain you.

musical journey into the life of the renowned Ojibwe WWI sniper and decorated offi cer of the Canadian military,

Francis Pegahmagabow. Composed by Timothy Corlis and written by Ojibwe poet Armand Garnet Ruffo, Sounding Thunder is a complex work divided into three acts. It explores Pegahmagabow’s early years immersed in the world of the Anishinabe spirits, his extraordinary accomplishments in the trenches of WWI, and fi nally his political life as Chief of the Wasauksing Ojibwe and founder of the early Indigenous political movement in Canada. Commissioned and produced by Festival of the Sound, Artistic Director James Campbell.

YOUNG ARTISTS

The Festival of the Sound’s Stockey Young Artist Program supports exceptional young musicians in their transition to professional careers and honours our benefactor Charles W. Stockey. Charles and Lois Stockey took an interest in young performers and often hosted recitals for them in their home in Victoria. They often expressed the hope that young artists would have the chance to play in the wonderful acoustics of the Stockey Centre.

youth MusiC eduCAtion Fund

In the late winter of 2017, a group of Board members and supporters met for two days to brainstorm and plan for the next fi ve years in the life of the Festival of the Sound. This takes the Festival beyond the highly visible summer concert series to look at ways to promote the love of music in the Parry Sound region and far beyond. youth Music Education was identifi ed as one of these ways.

In 2010, Fran Brown, a dedicated concert-goer from the Festival’s inception, made a generous donation to ensure that children would have the opportunities that she didn’t to experience classical music at a young age. The youth Music Education Fund was established to ensure the future of Music Scores, the Festival’s unique initiative to bring professional musicians to Parry Sound twice each year for visits to all the elementary schools in the region. All children in Grades 4 to 6 are then taken to a formal concert at the Stockey Centre.

In order to enhance the Festival’s support of emerging professional artists through the Stockey young Artist initiative and to broaden Music Scores to reach younger students and bring coaching and master class sessions to high school students, the Festival of the Sound will be asking for your help to grow the funds in the youth Music Education Fund.

A tax deductible donation will make you part of this exciting initiative.
