Dear parents and guardians,I am sure many of you would have learnt from the media that at the recent Committee of Supply Debate 2017, MOE had highlighted that there are many forms of success in different domains. It also announced that there are many paths and new possibilities in our education system for our children. This is coupled with enhanced access to opportunities for all our children to ensure that no child is disadvantaged because of his or her background.

MOE also stressed on the importance of holistic development, that our children’s values and character remain the core and at the centre of all that they do. It was reiterated that schools play a big role in helping our children discover and pursue their interests and develop their strengths.

To allow our pupils to discover their passion for the future, at PPS, we are committed to uncovering their interests and talents. To achieve this, we make it our mission to ignite the joy of learning in the pupils. With the timely introduction of Programme for Active Learning (PAL) for P1 this year, our pupils are exposed to varied and fun learning experiences in the following four domains: Sports and Games, Outdoor Education, Performing Arts and Visual Arts. Pupils also learn socio-emotional competencies such as respecting others and responsible decision-making. We hope that through PAL, we nurture confidence, curiosity and cooperation skills in our pupils. As they participate in these learning activities and reflect afterwards, we hope that the pupils will discover their own interests, talents and strengths. Such fun learning experiences and self-discovery in fact do not stop at P1. As you can read from this semester’s issue of publication, the pupils at PPS are exposed to a myriad of age-appropriate activities that develop them in the various domains across all the levels.

In line with our Education Minister’s call to develop entrepreneurial dare in the pupils to put them in good stead in the future, at PPS, we instil in the pupils a CHAMPION Mindset. Basically, when the pupils adopt such a mindset, they would CHallenge themselves to be better than what they are now, strive to achieve their AMbitions, think Positively by having faith and confidence in themselves and their own ability, and finally, have the convictION to pick themselves up from failures such that they try and try again until they succeed. The staff and I truly believe that when the children find joy in the learning process and approach all tasks before them with a CHAMPION mindset, they will be able to maximise their true potential.

It leaves me now to invite you to work hand in hand with my staff and me in developing the children, so that they face the challenges of the 21st century with zest and confidence.

The school collaborates with the Bright Hill Evergreen Home and Geylang East Home For The Aged as part of our Chinese New Year celebration. This is in line with our commitment to fulfil Corporate Social Responsibility(CSR) for staff and Values In Action(VIA) for pupils and ensuring that it is part of our everyday operation.

Our Parent Support Group (PSG) has been actively engaging our existing parent volunteers. They have helped to add value to our pupils’ learning in the social and moral domains which are embedded in our school events such as Total Defence Day, International Friendship Day and other recess activities.

The school continues to deepen collaboration with Singapore Korean International School to expand the capabilities of our staff and pupils. A group of teachers and pupils will embark on an overseas learning journey to visit schools in Korea that champion green conservation and innovation.

The school collaborated with Singapore Science Centre to organise an interactive parent-child hands-on workshop, “Our Toy, Our Story” for Primary 1 to 4 pupils and their parents. Each parent-child pair worked together to create toys during the event. The objective of the event was to encourage parent-child bonding through a series of playful exploration of hands-on activities and discover the science behind simple hand-made toys.

The Learning Symposium that was held over two Saturdays was a great success! Parents had the opportunity to delve into the current pedagogies to enrich their children’s learning. They were actively engaged throughout the sessions and provided positive feedback. Our teachers were greatly encouraged by the responses from the parents.

Singapore KindneSS MoveMentOn Saturday, 22 April 2017, in conjunction with Singapore Kindness Week, a group of student leaders and teachers went to Bright Hill Evergreen Home to bring joy to the elderly as part of our kindness movement. Punggol-Hibiscus Residents’ Committee came along with us this year. Together, we danced, sang and played games with the elderly.

Punggol Primary celebrated ‘ASEAN Turning 50’ this year. We had an ASEAN50 fiesta with many booths featuring activities from our neighbouring countries. The pupils had the opportunity to experience a Wayang Kulit performance, Thai Kickboxing and even tried on Myanmese costumes. It was an enjoyable and enriching experience for one and all as they learnt to appreciate their international friends and their cultures.

Aktiviti-aktiviti dwi mingguan Jabatan Bahasa Ibunda tahun ini telah dijalankan pada bulan Februari yang lalu. Murid-murid darjah 3 hingga 6 telah melakukan aktiviti-aktiviti menarik seperti teater membaca, perkhemahan budaya, mengenali wayang kulit dan bacaan kreatif. Murid-murid begitu seronok dapat melibatkan diri dalam aktiviti-aktiviti yang dapat meningkatkan pengetahuan bahasa dan budaya mereka.

为推广母语学习，母语老师在今年的母语双周统筹策划了一系列精彩有趣的节目，让学生有机会在课堂以外接触母语，认识文化。在今年的“语文和文化营”中，小四的学生在一个充满文化气息的环境里学习泥塑、剪纸、书法、指甲花绘画、纸编等活动，通过传统手工的制作，学生身临其境地感受到了各族文化的魅力。

同时，我们也请了杂技团给小三、小五及小六的学生表演杂技。杂技演员表演顶技、扯玲、走球等惊险的动作，让大家不禁为他们捏一把冷汗。节目的高潮莫过于学生与老师被邀到台上“杂耍”。他们诙谐的动作把观众逗得哄堂大笑，而节目也在师生的欢笑声中划下完美的句点。

无论是传统手工，还是杂技表演，都能把母语文化非同一般的美带给莘莘学子。我们希望每年以不同的互动方式激发学生对母语学习的兴趣，并且充实他们的人生行囊。
