DECEMBER 29 2013 THE HOLY FAMILY OF JESUS, MARY AND JOSEPH Reflecting on God’s Word Could any period in history have been more difficult than the one in which we live when it comes to raising children, keeping marriages together, or maintaining ties among adult family members? Our whole culture often seems to be working against us. The Christmas season, especially, magnifies the differences between the values that we Catholic Christians hold and the values of the ordinary world. And not all the stresses are external. Many of our troubles arise from the differences among people within our families. Christmas can also exacerbate those internal tensions. Sometimes we just want to run away and hide from the dual struggle with the bad influences of the world and the strains of family life! The feast of the Holy Family gives us much needed encouragement. The Gospel story shows Joseph and Mary fleeing to Egypt to keep Jesus safe, and then returning to Nazareth in Galilee to raise him in their Jewish culture. Jesus was protected by his parents from danger of death. Yet they did not keep him sequestered forever. As a child growing up, he lived out his call to holiness while dwelling in the midst of the Galilean Jewish community, with all its positive and negative influences. The readings from Sirach and Colossians illustrate how our own call to holiness can be lived out in our everyday lives. This feast reminds us that in Christ, the divine and the human, the holy and the ordinary have been forever linked. Whether it is in our nuclear family, our extended family, our parish family, the family of Christians, or the human family, today we celebrate the holiness that is to be found within our ordinary human families and communities. THE HOLY FAMILY OF

JESUS, MARY AND JOSEPH

Reflecting on God’s Word Could any period in history have been more difficult than the one in which we live when it comes to raising children, keeping marriages together, or maintaining ties among adult family members?

The lovely gospel accounts that we revel in during these days of Christmastime hold up for us the image of Jesus, Mary and Joseph, the Holy Family of Nazareth. And so we celebrate the Holy Family on the Sunday after Christmas Day. It’s easy to gaze on the images in the Christmas crib and recognize the holiness of the newborn Jesus, his mother and his guard-ian. It may be harder to look at your own chil-dren or parents or brothers and sisters and see reflections of that same holiness in them. After all, living together, you see each other’s bad sides as well as the good, the warts as well as the dimples.

But if we truly believe in what we are celebrating, the incarnation of God in the flesh, and the fact that Jesus saved us by his death and resurrection into which we are baptized, then we must cultivate the ability to see a re-flection of the baby Jesus’ holiness in each child in our own families, to see the holiness of Mary and of Joseph reflected in ourselves as parents and in our own parents.

Maybe it will help to remember not just the gurgling baby Jesus in the crib, but also the toddler Jesus at age two — in his own version of the “terrible twos.” Or to meditate on Mary and Joseph changing diapers and picking up the ancient Palestinian version of Cheerios from the kitchen floor — and the living room floor and the bedroom floor and. . . . The gos-pels are silent about Jesus’ childhood, but truly human as well as truly God, Jesus no doubt had nosebleeds and skinned knees, tried dan-gerous stunts, didn’t get enough sleep some-times and so was cranky. Maybe there were even battles over homework. (Jesus would have studied Hebrew and the scriptures.)

And think of Jesus as a teenager. We get a glimpse of him in the gospel of Matthew at age twelve, wandering off in Jerusalem, caus-

ing Mary and Joseph to panic. Of course he didn’t have the opportunity to take driver’s ed or ask for the car keys, but there were a myriad of other but similar parent-teen encounters, to be sure.

Some may find such speculation to be sacrilegious. “Jesus is perfect,” they’ll object. “Jesus is God!” How very true. And Jesus was a baby, a teenager, a young adult, too. True God, true man. And maybe, just maybe one of the delights of this Christmas season is that some of the small quirky things about us as hu-man beings — the terrible twos, the teenage struggle for independence, parents’ angst about their child — maybe all of these are holy and part of what it means to grow toward perfec-tion.

Glory in heaven and peace on earth, now and forever!

The Twelve Days of Christmas

In England, for almost 275 years from 1558 to 1829, Roman Catholics were not allowed to publicly live out their faith. In order to instruct children in the ways of the Catholic faith, a song rooted in symbolism was created to keep the beliefs of the Church alive among Catholics in England. The symbols from “The Twelve Days of Christmas” are:

• My true love (God) • Me (any baptized Christian) • A partridge in a pear tree (Jesus Christ) • Two turtle doves (the Old and New Testaments) • Three French hens (faith, hope, and love) • Four calling birds (the four Gospels) • Five golden rings (the Torah—the first five books of the Old Testament) • Six geese a-laying (the six days of creation) • Seven swans a-swimming (the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit) • Eight maids a-milking (the eight Beatitudes) • Nine ladies dancing (nine fruits of the Holy Spirit) • Ten lords a-leaping (the Ten Commandments) • Eleven pipers piping (the eleven apostles who were faithful to Jesus) • Twelve drummers drumming (the twelve statements established in the Apostle’s Creed)

Merry Christmas from St. Mary of the Annunciation

School St. Mary School students recently performed their annual Christmas program, “For the Glory of the King!” Students in kindergarten through fifth grade joyfully sang Christmas carols recalling the story of Jesus’ birth and proclaiming Christ the newborn king. The program included beautiful soloist perform-ances of both traditional and contemporary religious Christmas songs. Drummers spiritedly kept the beat during several num-bers, and student narrators depicted the birth of Christ and reminded us all to keep Christ in the forefront of the Christmas season. The program was complete with children dressed as traditional Christmas pageant characters. Thank you to St. Mary School Music Director Mr. Jose Velez-Flores, for an out-standing program. St. Mary School faculty, staff and parents wish you and yours a joyful Christmas season!”

St. Mary boasted a school as early as 1884. The Annual Parish Report for 1884 indicates that there were 11 boys and 12 girls in the school that year with one male teacher. The old timers have no recollection of a school building at the original site. Possibly, the children went to somebody’s home or the church building doubled as a classroom. The name of the parish in this report is listed as “Mission of St. Mary's (Annunciation) Situated at Fremont Center, Lake County, and attached to the Pastoral District of Buffalo Grove”.

During our Sesquicentennial year the History Committee presents weekly selections from the treasure chest of our precious past.

Lenten Meditation Books Continue Fr. O’Malley’s Tradition

One of our goals for our Sesquicentennial Year is to publish a Lenten book of meditations based on the daily readings of the Lenten Season. This 2014 Lenten Meditation book will be dedi-cated to Fr. Pat O’Malley whose yearly book of Lenten Mediations were so well received . The plan for this special edition of the Lenten Meditation Book is to have parishioners take one day of Lent and to write a 300 to 400 word meditation. We are now taking the names of vol-unteer authors and inviting potential authors to come to a meeting on Tuesday, January 14th, to receive more information and guid-ance on how to go about writing the meditation texts. If you’re interested, leave a message for Fr. Ron at the parish office
