Reading

We will be ending our readers have big jobs to do unit. The next unit we will be starting is a fiction reading unit which focuses on the elements of narratives. We will continue to focus on phonics, as well as fluency and comprehension. Our comprehension skills will include: retelling a story with important details from the beginning, middle and end, and making connections between our lives and the books we read.You can help your child by asking him/her questions about his/her books everyday! Ask him/her to retell the story with important details from the beginning, middle and end.

Writing

We will be ending our writing reviews unit in a few weeks. During this unit we are learning how to write reviews on items and places as well as give our opinions. We are continuing to write introductions and conclusions, while stating our opinions and supplying reasons. In our next unit we will be working on writing realistic fiction stories. We will be creating a character and write several stories about that character. Our stories will have a setting, problem and solution.You can help your child at home reinforcing the use of proper conventions such as capital and lowercase letters in the right places, and punctuation marks to end sentences.

Math

We have spent a lot of time this year on adding and subtracting. We will keep practicing those skills, but now we will be introducing the concepts of place value and greater than or less than and comparing numbers.You can help your child by making and/or practicing flashcards for your child with addition and subtraction facts within 20 every night. Also, work with your child by having them compare two different numbers.

Fundations

We have learned how to tap out words and blend the sounds together for reading and writing. We are now learning about blends, which are two or more consonants that make their own sounds but blend together very nicely. We will also begin working on vowel teams.You can help your child by practicing tapping out words. When your child asks you to spell a word for them, remind them that they can tap out the word. Have them search for blends and vowel teams in words when they are reading.

Sight Words

We cannot stress how important these words are. Sight words make up more than 85% of the words we speak, read and write. Your child must learn to read and write the sight words we send home. By the end of first grade, your child should know how to read and write at least 133 sight words.You can help your child by making flashcards of the sight words we’ve taught. Use the cards to practice reading and writing, and to play a memory game. Have your child search for all the words they can read in magazines, books, and newspapers. Make a list of all the words they can read.

Library

In First grade, the current Social Studies theme is Community. Fiction & Non-Fiction read alouds will include the following topics: Community, People in the Community, and Jobs in the Community. On going conversations will be based on how each person in the community can make a change. “One kind act can change the world”

Music

Students are working in music instrument centers involving pianos and xylophones. Within the centers, students are exploring sounds, rhythms and melodies they can create on their own as well as reading musical melodies written in simple music notation. This month, students will be composing their own music using the pianos and xylophones.

Science

In Science we will be studying air and weather. Students turn their focus to the sky to make observations that will heighten their awareness, curiosity, and understanding of Earth’s dynamic atmosphere and the observable patterns of objects in the sky. Students explore the natural world by using simple instruments and calendars to observe and monitor change. Students find out about properties of air by exploring how objects interact with air. Students observe daily changes in air temperature and connect them to the daily movement of the Sun in the sky. They monitor changes in hours of daylight over the seasons and connect them to changing weather conditions. And they find the Moon in the day and night skies and monitor its movement over the month

P.E.

WHAT SPORTS ARE WE LEARNING THIS MONTH?

April: Students will be working on Racquet skills. Students will have their own racquet and work on balancing the ball and using their hand/eye coordination to hit the ball. Students will learn about all racquet sports, including tennis, badminton, and Ping-Pong.

MyOn

Students are now working on a series of books about bullying, such as "Insults are not Funny." At home, parents can talk to their children about how to spot and prevent bullying.

May: Students will be working on Hockey skills. Students will be learning about the game of hockey and how to hold a stick and hit the ball the correct way. The older students will learn and play “game like” situations and the younger students will work on holding the stick and moving around the gym, hitting objects that are on the ground.

REMINDERS

Please remind your child about wearing sneakers on the days that he or she has physical education. Students can easily get hurt if they are running around in flats, dress shoes, or boots. Depending on what game is being played in the gym, your child might have to sit out because he or she is not wearing sneakers.

HEALTHY TIP OF THE MONTH

Try in incorporate a green vegetable in your daily eating routine. Either for lunch or dinner, make one that the whole family can enjoy together!

HEALTHY RECIPE OF THE MONTH

Tropical Strawberry Smoothie: 1 ½ cup of frozen strawberries—1 cup of frozen pineapple chunks—1/2 of fat free milk—1 ½ cup of yogurt—1 tablespoon of Splenda—1/2 cup of ice. Blend for a minute and enjoy!

CienciaEn ciencia estudiaremos aire y clima.
