FIPLV Mission Statement A global network of support

for language professionals

FIPLV exists for the worldwide support, development and promotion of languages through professional associations

We are active in over 100 countries and cover several hundred thousand teachers of languages worldwide

What we do

• contribute to the professional development of language teachers

• collect and disseminate the latest international research to our member associations

• campaign on issues of concern - e.g. language policy, multilingualism, class sizes, less commonly taught languages

• enable professional associations of language teachers worldwide to learn from each other

• represent language teachers internationally through their national and international associations

“The very motivated Tundra Yukagir children learn their mother tongue in school from a very young age on from local native teachers who literally make all courseware with their own hands, because there is no courseware, there is also no money. Their devotion and enthusiasm commands deep respect. At home the language is hardly spoken anymore, and parents, including the language teachers, blamed themselves for not passing the mother tongue on to their children. We are guilty ourselves, tells the headmaster of the secondary school, we should have understood that the language is doomed to disappear if we do not work hard for its revitalization.” (Odé in World News 64)

FIPLV and Linguapax

• In 1987, during a UNESCO meeting on languages teaching in Kiev, FIPLV Secretary General, György Szépe, participated in the creation of Linguapax: “Foreign Languages and Literatures for Peace and International Understanding”

• Since 1987, Linguapax Meetings were held all over the world, in many of which FIPLV was actively involved (e.g. Linguapax IX, X, Barcelona 2002 and 2004)

• FIPLV is also involved in establishing the International Linguapax Network
