A whole world of celebrations with IKEA The holidays mean something different for everyone. They may call
to mind a plump, steaming turkey carved at the head of the table while
mouths water. For others, it is about cocktails and gift giving with a
small group of close friends. There is a multitude of ways to celebrate;
and this festive time of year is an opportunity for families to create new
traditions, while also updating old ones in a modern way to reflect the
personality of the people involved. This personality can be expressed
through décor around the home, a decorated tree and even the holiday
menu, resulting in a celebration that blends both unique and customary
elements.
“At this time of year, one of the most important parts of the holidays
for many people are their loved ones – celebrating with family and

A whole world of celebrations with IKEAfriends,” says Madeleine Lowenborg-Frick, Public Relations Manager
for IKEA Canada. “These celebrations become even more meaningful
with the integration of traditions, both new and old. The importance of
traditions cannot be underestimated – they instill a sense of belonging
in the family, and encourage spending quality family time together.”
For Holiday 2006, IKEA has developed ways to create holiday traditions
for three distinct personalities, utilizing diverse themes and moods:
“Nature” – traditional with a twist
“Bright White” – from romantic and ornate, to modern and urban
“Joy” – youthful, “Bollywood” vibe
32

Bright White Bright White Bright White “The ‘Bright White’ personality can be interpreted in two different
ways: romantic with lots of sparkle, or a more modern sensibility with
classic, clean lines,” says Lowenborg-Frick. For the more romantic en-
vironment, a white, painted antique-looking table would be the focus.
Lots of sparkle in the glassware is a must, with glass or mercury candle-
holders, cutlery wrapped in a linen napkin and finished with a dainty
bow, and two or three crystal chandeliers hung low over the table. The
feminine Christmas tree is decorated with a multitude of glittering,
white lights, beaded garlands and ornamental birds. The finished prod-
uct is sparkly and looks laden with decorations.

Bright White Bright White Bright White The modern look takes white in a different direction. The overall
mood: the holidays with a Zen feel and a touch of disco. This holiday
table is glass and steel, with mirrored tiles as placemats and lots of high
gloss accessories and layering. The dinner itself would also be non-
traditional, for example cocktails and sushi. Paper lanterns hung from
the ceiling light the scene. The modern white version of the Christmas
tree would also have a disco vibe – mirrored balls in different sizes, silver
and gold, and smaller ornaments with a frosted finish.

“There’s a crisp sparkle to the Scandinavian
winter landscape. I used this special feeling as
the starting point when I designed ISIG glassware. The bowls, candlesticks
and tealight-holders offer a new twist to traditional styles. When you fill them
with candles, flowers or candy, the whole house glitters and glistens.”

Joy! Joy! Joy! Joy! Joy! Joy! “Joy” is an urban, young, non-traditional personality. The mood that
is created is a Bollywood, patchwork vibe; gold can also be added for a
South Asian feel. The holiday table has a funky mix and match feel, with
patterned gift-wrap used as placemats, coloured dishes, and a quirky gift
on each plate. An oversized fixture with different coloured bulbs would
provide the lighting. “For dinner, this personality would do something
more non-traditional, for example turkey curry,” says Lowenborg-Frick.
“A signature drink might also be created, like a white grape juice mix
with frozen red berries at the bottom of the glass for a hit of colour.”
1716
01_Press_kit_holiday.indd 16 9/27/06 10:37:08 PM
Joy! Joy! Joy! Joy! Joy! Joy! Children could either be seated at the main table, or at a smaller “kid’s
table”. This table’s décor would also be brightly coloured with different
plates, napkins and even cutlery with coloured handles. Hanging a soft
toy off the back of each child’s chair acts as a special gift for during
dinner.
The Joy Christmas tree has more of a sense of humour, and nothing is
meant to match – it is a patchwork feel with coloured tree lights, glass
ducks and other ornaments in different colours, shapes and sizes.

Nature Nature Nature Nature Nature The “Nature” personality reflects a more traditional holiday celebra-
tion: those who enjoy lots of decorating around the house, baking their
own cookies, giving beautifully wrapped gifts and cooking a traditional
dinner. However, this version of traditional does not equal old fashioned,
but traditional done with a modern sense. The table where the turkey,
mashed potatoes and Grandma’s sweet potato pie are served would be
a long wooden table with a red table runner, set with plain white dish-
ware, chunky glassware, and an individually-wrapped gift at each place
setting. A fallen bough from the backyard, wrapped in white twinkle
lights, can be hung over the table as a light fixture for the holidays.
2524
02_Press_kit_holiday.indd 24 9/27/06 10:44:21 PM
Nature Nature Nature Nature Nature Nature’s Christmas tree would be decorated with a lot of unmatched
ornaments – some made by the children in grade school, others that are
passed down from Grandma and Grandpa. Lots of red unifies all the
different decorations. This tree might also include straw decorations
tied on with red ribbon, and homemade gingerbread men.
“Nature’s holiday celebration would have a warm, homey feel,” says
Lowenborg-Frick. “Imagine walking up the front walk of the house
amidst twinkling lights and being enveloped by the scent of freshly
baked cookies when you walk through the door – that epitomizes this
personality.”

ISIG metal candleholders
“I love metal. It’s a classic Scandinavian material that’s
easy to work with. When I designed ISIG candleholders I wanted to use the unique characteristics of metal to create something timeless.
That’s why there’s no unnecessary decoration. The result reminds me of traditional Scandinavian handicrafts from the days
when people still dipped their own candles. The simple style goes well in every home and
all sorts of different settings.”

In the olden days, Swedes believed that every farm had its own super-strong little “tomte”, who guarded over it and helped out. He always did his work at night. There are even people today who say they’ve seen a “tomte”. Have you?

Guests Guests Guests Guests Guests It is the time of year when households across Canada begin preparing
for the holidays and looking forward to spending time with loved ones
visiting from out of town. Whether hosting the in-laws, a favourite aunt,
or an old friend from another province, it is important to ensure guests
have an enjoyable stay and that the focus of the holidays remains on the
warmth of the season, not additional stress and cost. IKEA has lots
of easy solutions for making overnight guests feel welcome.
A comfortable bed or sofa bed is the ideal overnight accommodation.
However if guests do have to sleep on the floor or sofa, provide head and
neck support with a high quality pillow and a warm blanket to add a
little more comfort. Whatever the sleeping accommodations, guests

Guests Guests Guests Guests Guests always appreciate soft sheets, a comfortable duvet and a fresh pillow.
Colourful textiles can create a bright and cheerful bed, keeping with the
holiday spirit. Be sure to provide several hooks, hangers, shelves and
baskets to store clothes. For longer stays, a closet, chest of drawers or a
wardrobe is useful.
The holidays are a time for gathering with family and friends to share a
meal and catch up. Having stacking chairs on hand is always a good idea
whether accommodating a formal meal at the table or just an informal
gathering in the living room. Expandable tables allow for a quick fix to
make room at the table for an extra unexpected guest. Colourful dishes
create a beautiful festive table where memories are made.
