Rent a BikeThis week, Montreal launched there BIXI bike sharing pro-gram. For $78 dollars, you can get a yearly pass that will eventually give you access to a few thousand bikes all over the island. With the pass, you can pick up any bike, ride it anywhere for 30 minutes free of charge, after that, there is a dollar or so fee for each addi-tional hour.

The project is in its early phases at this point with just a few stations in key cycling locations such as downtown, plateau, and Saint-Henri.

The whole project is quite green, with the rental stations being solar powered (this is nothing new to Montreal, as all parking meters around the city are solar powered and have been for years).I am curious to see how the system succeeds. Cit-ies such as Amsterdam have free bicycle rental programs that are widely utilized. However, I wonder if it wouldn’t be cheaper for these individ-uals seen as potential customers to simply spend that 78 dollars on a bike of their own. Used bikes are fairly easy to come by. One may argue that if you are stuck somewhere without a bike, having access to a BIXI could be bene cial.

I guess we’ll see.

Montreal had been seeing an strong increase in car traf c as people slowly moved toward the suburbs. In the past year or so, this trend has reversed as gas prices have risen (gas up here is traditionally much more expensive than in the States).

Popular festival is feeling the heat as city continues its war on graf ti.

Graf ti artists and connoisseurs of hip hop culture from around the world gather in Montreal for the annual Under Pressure Graf ti Convention at Foufounes Élec-triques. But despite the increased respect graf ti art has gained in recent years, Under Pressure founder and organizer Sterling Downey says that, of late, the city of Montreal has been putting the pinch on local artists as well as his event.

“We’re kind of like the bastard children of the community, because we’re promoting this culture in a legal and public context,” Downey says. “But at the same time, because we’re so high pro le, it’s easy to point the nger and blame us [for graf ti problems].”

Founded in 1996 by Downey and a friend as a way to educate the public about graf ti art and com-bat its negative image in the media, UP has grown into a local institution. This year’s lineup features more than100 artists and 30 DJs, including hip hop legend Kool Herc, who will be per-forming on the free outdoor stage.

by Cristopher Hazou

In 2005, the week before the 12th edition of the Under Pressure Graf ti Competition, the city an-nounced a $1-million graf ti clean-up plan. In explaining the need for the program, executive com-mittee member and Plateau borough mayor Helen Fotopulos linked graf ti with gang activity.

The following year, Downy received a phone call from a city of cial who suggested they might be interested in sponsoring UP again, but they had a problem because it cost the city over $30,000 to clean up afterwards, seem-ingly blaming Downey for unrelated graf ti in the surrounding neighbourhood.

“It was ridiculous. You can only blame me for what happens the day of, and even then only within a certain area,” says Downey, pointing out that the costs of dealing with vandalism and other criminal acts associated with other, larger festivals is far greater than anything that might be caused by UP.

A week before last year’s event, Marcel Tremblay, the executive committee mem-ber responsible for services to citizens, announced a proposed by-law banning the sale of spray paint to minors. The proposal wasn’t adopted, which is just as well ac-cording to Downey. “In graf ti, it’s cooler to steal paint if you’re a young kid.”

“As an administration, we’re not against [graf ti],” says Tremblay, citing a number of graf ti mural projects the city is involved with. He adds, however, that many older Montrealers and tourists feel threatened by graf ti. “Our preoccupation is to have a city that is secure and clean.”

According to Tremblay, the city, which spends $6.5-million an-nually to ght graf ti, isn’t interested in sponsoring UP again, but would like to work with the organizers in youth outreach and education.

2 DOLLAR NOODLESType: AsianLocation: St. Laurent & Pins

Who hasn’t hit up 2$ noodles at 2 am while out on St. Laurent? This place is the de nition of a hole-in-the-wall/ on-the go res-taurant. Whether it’s the warm peanut sauce, charm of being served while standing on the sidewalk, or your blood alcohol level, $2 Chow Noodles has somehow become a staple in the diet of countless after party-ers of St. Laurent.

L’AVENUEType: BreakfastLocation: Mont-Royal E, Be-tween Andre & De Mentana

If you don’t know, now you know. L’Avenue is so good… “How good is it?”It’s so good that there is a line stretching almost half way down the block every Sunday from 11-1. This hipster break-fast joint/ funk-trendy nightspot is all the rage in the plateau scene. And you know how cool the plateau scene is, right? The menu is epic and is styled like a comic book, they serve a va-riety of mouth-watering break-fast meals, as well as a fully loaded lunch and dinner menu, including the biggest, most awestacular club sandwich I’ve ever had. Hit it up anytime, but prepare to wait.

BOUSTANType: LebaneseLocation: Crescant and De Maisoneuve

So it’s three in the morning and all that booz has your stomach begging for some late-night eats. Get to the northwest corner of Crescent and De Maisonneuve and wait in line for Lebanese food at its post-partying best. The vegetarian sandwich has been praised with good reason, but no one can deny Boustan’s shish taouks and falafels. Ask for extra nap-kins and don’t forget to pack a pocket full of mint candies for that garlic breath.

Medievel GuysSometimes living in Mon-tréal is like living in a giant Medieval Times. Among the multitudes of dirty hippies and burnouts that congregate on the mountain every weekend, a certain subgroup stands out. On the metro, instead of an-noying you with huge bon-gos or sitars, they poke you in the back with giant foam swords and duct-tape maces. Instead of tie-dye and skirts over pants, they’re rocking mesh cowls and cross-gartered breeches. These people are the medievalists and they’re fuck-ing scary.

You can tell they’re serious because their wholesale com-mitment to looking ridiculous makes Norwegian black metal bands look like 12-year-old girls with mosquito-bite boobs. Anyone can do a nos-talgic look from some point in the 20th century, but it takes balls the size of watermel-ons to take things back to Ye Olde Schoole by spending weeks fashioning matching chain-mail armor, hand-carved wooden shields, and custom leather codpieces. It might look like these guys are just on some lame 12-sided die shit, but if you get close enough, it’s actually one big hardcore scary postapocalyptic trip

(those duct-taped swords actually have fucking steel rods in them). If you’re interested in seeing the medievalists in action, the Mountain on Sundays is your best bet, although a number of parks are hosting a poor man’s version at any given time.

Guns N’ Roses Chinese DemocracyGenre: Rock & RollLocation: St. Laurent & Pins

Let’s get right to it: The rst Guns n’ Roses album of new, original songs since the rst Bush administration is a great, audacious, unhinged and uncompromising hard-rock record. In other words, it sounds a lot like the Guns n’ Roses you know. At times, it’s the clenched- st ve that made 1987’s perfect storm, Appetite for Destruction; more often, it’s the one sprawled across the maxed-out CDs of 1991’s Use Your Illusion I and II, but here compressed into a convul-sive single disc of supershred guitars, orchestral fanfares, hip-hop electron-ics, metallic tabernacle choirs and Axl Rose’s still-virile, rusted-siren singing. Axl Rose put so much time and effort into proving that he was super-talent-ed that the rest of humanity forgot he always had been. And that hurt him. This record may tank commercially. Some people will slaughter Chinese Democracy, and for all the reasons you would expect. But fuck critics, enjoy this album, and long live Rock & Roll.

R.E.MMurmur Deluxe EditionGenre: Alternative RockLabel: Hib Tone

Twenty- ve years later, the album that invented “alternative rock” still sounds great: anthemic on a bedroom scale, danceable but not robotic, experimental without being oblique. And Michael Stipe’s nasal muezzin-croon pulses with brooding emotion even when the lyrics are unintelli-gible. The bonus disc captures a 1983 Toronto club gig that strips Murmur’s sound bare. It’s sloppy but thrilling, with outbursts of Stipe’s unhinged vibrato and a perfect cover of “There She Goes Again,” by the Velvet Un-derground — patron saints of a sound that R.E.M. developed into something bigger and longer-lived than anyone would’ve guessed.

JUSTICEA Cross the UniverseGenre: ElectroLabel: Ed Banger

Unfortunately for Justice, the act’s “live” CD/ DVD sees release a few weeks after the blogosphere had a eld day with a photo that showed it playing ferociously on MIDI equip-ment—which was visibly unplugged. No matter, though. The Justice live show—like any proper nightclub party —is more about communal experience through music playback, as the crowd noise on this 18-track synth blitz proves. Just listen to those kids ll the silence with a singalong during “We Are Your Friends” or bust a gut cheering when the familiar sing-song refrain to the hit “D.A.N.C.E.” rst drops. Nearly every track here is from the French duo’s 2007 debut “Cross,” tweaked and sequenced for maximum rock concert-like impact. Does it upset the applecart of ethics of both DJ’ing and live performance? Absolutely. But hearing a crowd go wild for a kick drum has to do the dance community proud.

`Polytechnique’ gets $3.1 millionDetails about lm on 1989 Montreal mas-sacre hush-hush as Tele lm funding an-nounced.PETER HOWELL MOVIE CRITIC

A violent chapter in Canadian history is heading to the big screen in a top-secret production designed to minimize controversy.

Polytechnique, a lm by award-winning producer Don Carmody, dramatizes the Montreal Massacre of Dec. 6, 1989, in which 14 women were killed, and 10 women and four men were injured by deranged gunman Marc Lépine, who then

Marc Lepine. Sole Gunman of the Poly-technique Massacre December 6th, 1989.

took his own life.

The movie is titled for École Polytechnique, an enginering school af liated with L’Université de Montreal, where the tragedy occurred. The movie is in English.

Polytechnique has been lming in Montreal under tight security and a news blackout in recent weeks owing to public sensitivity about the 18-year-old event, which is still fresh in many minds.

No scenes are being lensed in École Polytechnique itself. Other colleges and a studio are stand-ing in for the school.

Producer Carmody, who is behind such hits as the Oscar-winning Chicago and the horror lm Silent Hill, declined to give details yesterday when reached by the Star.

“For fairly obvious reasons, we are not doing any press on Polytechnique in ad-vance of the release,” he said via email from a movie-location scouting trip.

“The lming has been completed. That’s all I’m prepared to reveal at this time.”

The movie has come out of the shadows resently with the announcement by Tele lm Canada, the federal cultural investor, that it is giving Polytechnique $3.1 million in production nancing.

That’s the largest sum out of the 10 production investments announced yesterday, and close to the $4 million maximum Tele lm can provide. Tele lm spokesperson Douglas Chow called the amount “pretty average” for a movie of this magnitude.

Polytechnique is directed and co-written by Denis Villeneuve, a Quebec lmmaker a Quebec lmmaker known for his visual air. When asked about his trip to Cannes Film Festival, where he showed off his sumptuous short, “Next Floor,” the director expressed his relief by taking a break from the editing room where he’s been labouring over “Polytechnique.“

“It was a big relief for me to do this movie,” Villeneuve said of “Next Floor” during a recent interview.

“(‘Polytechnique’) was a tough movie to make and for me going to Cannes is like a break.”

“Next Floor” tells the story of 11 pampered diners as they tear into mounds of elaborately prepared food. At rst, their consumption is quite civilized, but the intensity increases with each forkful until the oor is groaning menacingly beneath them.

Villeneuve wasnt the only one plagued with stress as a result of “Polytechnique.” The actors were faced with a different kind of stress.

Villeneuve said the lm’s subject matter still gives him nightmares and notes the crew and actors found it tough coping with the violence. The genial director calls the movie “maybe the most rewarding work I’ve done.”

The families of the 14 slain women did not participate in the project but gave it their approval.

“The worst thing in life is to lose a child,” Villeneuve said. “I did want to respect that.”

He didn’t lm at the Ecole polytechnique campus, although the production had permission to do so. Villeneuve said some characters are ctional.

“It is accurate with the events but I didn’t want it to be too close to reality out of respect for the victims and the

families. I want it to be a kind of poetic remembrance, not a docudrama.”

Gunman Marc Lepine is played by Maxim Gaudette, who appeared in the hit “Les 3 p’tit cochons” (“The Three Little Pigs”).

“He’s not the centre of the movie. The goal is not to explore his character,” Villeneuve said. “It’s more about the victims and the effects of the violence on them.”

“Polytechnique” was originally to be lmed in French only, but was ultimately shot simultaneously in English and French after a Toronto partner signed on with Quebec producers.

The project was initially turned down by the Quebec lm fund-ing agency SODEC and Tele lm Canada, which Villeneuve said made valid points about aspects of the script that needed polishing. Quebec and federal funding eventually came through“’Polytechnique’ is like ‘Apocalypse Now,”’ Villeneuve said, referring to the 1979 Vietnam war epic that is said to have given director Francis Ford Coppola a nervous breakdown.

A Tele lm press release summarizes Polytechnique in a single paragraph: “Between the horror of an unpredictable massacre and shattered destinies, the lm unfolds the tragedy experienced by the students attending the school. Through the shattered dreams and the incomprehensible gesture of a killer, Polytech-nique lifts the veil on the most tragic event that has occurred in Quebec.”

The Internet Movie Database supplies further details, including a 2009 release date, which would mark the 20th anniversary of the tragedy.

This movie is by far the best movie I’ve seen with Van Damme. Not his best action movie, because it’s not what you expect from Van Damme. but hands down the best movie he’s ever made. Movie hero Jean-Claude Van Damme nds himself out of money, ghting for custody of his daughter and losing every good action role to Steven Sea-gal. In an attempt to escape, the aging star walks away from his shrinking spotlight and returns home to his na-tive Brussels. But when he is thrown into a real-life hostage situation, everyone sees a side of Van Damme they’ve never seen before as he takes on the police, battles the perpetrators and creates a media restorm that cap-tures the attention of the world. In my opinion this is the highlight of his career and it’s upsetting that this lm didn’t have a wider release, because I think would’ve found an audience.

Man on WireGenre: DocumentaryPlaying at: AMC Forum 22

Man on Wire is an exciting docu-mentary about Philippe Petit who, thanks to his friends, managed to sneak into the World Trade Center in 1974 and do a high-wire act between the Twin Towers. From the very start of the lm it pulls you in, this is an amazing story and Petit is an amazing person to document. Sure, he’s reckless and has a wild personality, but he’s fasci-nating to watch. This documentary plays like a classic heist lm. It’s lled with sus-pense and has many of those caper moments of mistakes that may ruin the entire job. Gears of War 2Genre: ShooterPlatform: XBOX 360

All the right elements are in place in this sequel to the popular third-person shooter that again pits Delta Squad against the Locust Horde: gor-geous visuals, intense action, cheeky humor. There’s even that crunching sound enemies make when you tear into them and perform horri cally gratifying execution moves. And it’s all incredibly fun.Graphically, the game isn’t hugely more impressive than the rst Gears, but the larger environments and more vibrant scenery certainly help. This game is excellent. No two ways about it. It has its rough patches for sure. So many of the big, hyped games have disappointed me this year, and it feels good to play a game that actually lives up to its promise. The game doesn’t try and wow you with “innovative” new ideas, nor does it try and rede ne what an ac-tion game is. It’s a big, dumb, gory shooting game.

World of Warcraft:Wrath of Lich KingGenre: RPGPlatform PC

With a growing number of competi-tor games invading its home turf, the latest expansion of World of War-craft still proves that it’s top dog in the realm of massively multiplayer online gaming. In case you have a life, and don’t know what how the game works, I will sum it up for you. World of Warcraft, often referred to as WoW, is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG). You interact, speak to (through your microphone), battle, and form alli-ances with players from around the world in the largest map in video game history.Initially newcomers can be over-whelmed. The game is at times highly complex and has a steep learning curve. But for those up to the challenge, this game offers huge satisfaction and endless playability for the casual through to hardcore player.

Little Big PlanetGenre: ActionPlatform: Playstation 3

In LittleBigPlanet Players meet on a blue and green planet scattered with individual plots - and use their character’s amazing abilities to play, create and share what they build with other gamers through-out the world via the Playstation Network. The graphics of the game, while somewhat simple in terms of tex-tures and what they actually are, are intensely detailed, the Sackboy looks like a real-life doll and the stickers and items you collect can range from realistic snapshots to abstract art pieces. It’s not perfect - - the controls could be tighter, automatically shifting between planes can be problematic, the editor isn’t quite as robust as you might hope -- but what’s there is nothing short of astounding. If you own a PlaySta-tion 3, you cannot miss this. If you don’t have a PS3 yet, this is the reason to get one.
